Hey everyone, I need some advice. I have been out of the PC desktop world (at home) for some time and I have been getting the bug to start playing games like Cities and SimCity (I have not played in several years). I really am lost when it comes to specs needed. My main purpose for the pc itself would be for games like this and downloading mods. My laptop serves my needs for all other work that I do from home. I don''t have an interest in any other type of gaming other than these city building types. So... if my budget was 1,000 - 1.500 USD what would you recommend on specs with PC etc. and monitor. Thanks

Edit: Thanks for all your help! I just had to switch off the sound since AFAIK I didn't have any speakers for the game to output to. Game crashes either on the EA splash screen, or if I use the SC4 Launcher and skip the intro, after exactly six seconds. Anyone had the same problem and/or know a fix? More detail: all the Exception Reports state "ACCESS_VIOLATION" in the Exception Code and that ".pdb files appear to be absent" in the call stack/debug information. The game seems to recreate the SimCity 4 folder in My Documents on occasion, but yet, in-game, seems to be finding Regions from the SimCity 4 folder in the Steam directory. It crashes exactly the same way in all events - a very short time into the EA splash screen or after exactly the same span of time (around 6 seconds) if I skip the intro using a Launcher.Tried running in various compatibility modes, with a Launcher, without, on one core, on software renderer, on different resolutions. All no luck. Here's a copy/paste of the latest Exception Report:

what does your computer setup look like? what customizations have you made to make it your own? Here's mine, it's still in progress/under construction so expect changes as time goes on, the latest change is the shelf to hold the CPU and make room for more stuff. EDIT: here's a better picture of my setup

Hello simtropolis community, Yes, yes I know there have been many posts about this. I will be honest I have not read every single post, but really, who would? Anyway to the problem. I recently began modding SC4. Note that this is background and could be part of the problem. Every so once in a while when I get an idea I go on an all out modding spree. Meaning: I download every mod incorporated with my idea from SC4Devotion and Simtropolis. So far I have downloaded: HBS Sets LBT Sets Most BSC Sets MAPP Sets NAM BLS CAL CSX There are more, but I can't name them all. I did also recently download a "Quick Launcher" though it failed so I uninstalled it, thinking this may have been the root of the problem. Not much later I downloaded the save notification mod. When the first notification to save came up and I either saved or ignored it the game CTD not too longer after, losing all my hard work I had made within about 10-15 minutes. As a result I uninstalled this as well. Before I left my PC for five days on a school trip, the game began randomly crashing to desktop again. I thought it may have been a recent plugin I installed(the name I can not remember). And as a result again I uninstalled the plugin. This temporarily solved the problem until three days before I left, the game started CTD again. So I began saving my cities every 5 minutes or so when I played again. I left on my trip. And so I returned to the problem still there.(Of course what am I thinking? It magically fixed it self?!) I tried a method when I returned, I went into affinities and set the game to using one CPU. This is all I have done and yet the game still crashed. I am using a Steam, bought version of SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition PC: HP Windows 7, AMD Athlon II 220 Dual-Core Processor 4GB system memory, 500 GB hard drive NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE integrated graphics Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Please help me.

Hi guys, First of all: don't know whether this is supposed to be in this subforum or at Technical Help, but I thought it'd be better off here. Here's the deal: yesterday I still played my city without problems. Today, I decided to install some plugins I found at the STEX and LEX - some lots, no special mods or so. After that, I installed NAM 31 (ofcourse, haha). When I tried to load the game afterwards, I noticed the game being loaded very, very slow - I had to wait about 20 minutes for my city to load and even then, it would respond slow - so I decided to google about slow-loading cities and found out about the SC4 Dat Packer, the Cleanitol and the defragmentation thingies. I all ran those, including the SC4 Dat Packer after making a backup folder including all the contents of the Plugin folder. I just tried to load my city, but I won't reach my city at all. The game crashes to desktop when loading the city. And this happens at ANY city. So then I set back the backup folder into the Plugin folder, I restarted my computer, I lowered the graphics settings and tried to load both cities again - it all didn't work. What am I supposed to do now? I've put a lot of work into one city of mine for the last 1-2 months and it'd be sad to see it all being lost, so I'd be glad if there was a solution to this. What can the problem be? And what can I do for now? Maybe run System Recovery? I'm running SC4 on Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba Satellite with a Plugin folder of about 1,6 GB. It's an old laptop, but I didn't had any problems running SC4 - although on big cities, ofcourse it was a bit slower. Here is my last excerpt report: Well that was my extensive report, I hope I made the situation clear and anyone could help me.. Thanks!

Best PC for running SC4 w/ custom content?
Goin2Chicago posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Hi, All! I have a relatively simple question and I'm hoping the wonderful members of ST can provide some kind of help. This week, I just procured another copy of SC4. My intentions were to build my plugins folder slowly as I build cities, while also learning the art of lot editing to fill my maps with essentially all custom content (as we see so many members of ST do so masterfully). After loading it into my PC and downloading some of the basic plugins as a start (NAM, terrain mod, Mapper, maps, etc), I found that my PC is far too outdated for me to run this game with the intentions that I have. So how large of an upgrade would I have to make in order to smoothly operate SC4 with a deep plugin folder? I'm open to any suggestions, whether they be to simply upgrade my current system in some way or even if I should go as far as to buying a gaming computer. I just figured that the community who is always posting beautiful work filled with custom content must have an idea of the computing capacity necessary to the run the game in such a manner. I thank you all in advance for the help! -
