Urbanisation and the evolution of cities in Dimland across 10,000 years, Classical Age
mitsos posted a City Journal entry in Dimland
As we saw in the previous chapter, agriculture was the crucial evolutionary step towards permanent human settlement and the creation of the first organized towns and cities from around 9500B.C. The collapse of bronze age civilizations led to a period called "dark ages" in which the was a massive migration. Very little is known. After this period, classical antiquity begins in the 8th century BC until the 6th century AD. During this period the Greeks achieved new heights in art, architecture, theater, and philosophy. Democracy in Athens was refined under the leadership of Pericles. In Dimland, these achievements led to the creation of large cities. Let's take a journey back in time and see some of the most important cities of ancient Dimland and how they evolved through centuries. Enjoy. Penthesili ,8th century BC. The acropolis hill, from a center of power converts to religious center. The first temples are beiing built. Evolution of Penthesilean Acropolis 8 BC- 1 AD The city of Penthesili in 2nd century AD. Population: 250,000 Penthesili now population: 982,625 Temple of Zeus The cities become wealthy and some of them are very important commercial hubs Delos island At the same time religious centers are built. Apollo's oracle Dion city, named after Zeus Stadiums and theaters are placed in every city as part of social and cultural life Health centers offer holistic therapies both for body and soul. From the album Ancient Civilizations (S3-14-M)
My submission for the ancient civilization challenge: an overview of the hamlet of An Fhianait. Located on the west coast of Ireland, it features a small church and a handful of cottages around the early medieval age (800-1100 AD). Despite the sea spray from the waves crashing on nearby cliffs, it's a sunny day. The cows and sheep are out and men are hard at work. Rye fields – a crop that grows readily in Ireland's cool climate – wait to be harvested. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a collection of menhirs, or standing stones, seem to glow in the sun. The villagers have since converted to Catholicism but the megalith serves as a reminder of the pagan beliefs of the Gaelic people in centuries past. Full-sized image, uncompressed:- 1 Comment

Firaxis will be releasing Civilization VI on October 21. Civilization VI brings back some features from Civ IV and combined it with Civ V. Civilization VI's map looks like those classic maps from the Age of Exploration, aka the Golden Age of Cartography.

Dawn of Humanity is a town-building strategy game that puts you in control as you experience the growth and development of your hunter-gatherer tribal settlement into a prosperous town fit for a modern civilization. Starting in 10,000 BC, you must ensure that you evolve and grow your village through the perils of prehistoric Stone Age to the challenges and opportunities presented by the late Middle Ages up to the Renaissance era. The player will have a choice of four different civilizations and cultures in which to develop their town that will be based on the climate and geographical location of the original settlement. To secure victory, the player must ensure that all available resources are used to their best potential in order to have a healthy, happy and productive population who will be the backbone of your success. Hey guys. I just found out about this upcoming game, and I had to make a new topic about it. The title is Civilization: Beyond Earth. It's being developed by Firaxis with many of the same people who worked on the original Alpha Centauri. Planned for release in Q3 2014, the game is meant to be a successor of sorts to Alpha Centauri, while expanding upon the ideas and engine of Civ V. Here's what co-lead designer David McDonough said about it: "The bones of the experience are very much recognisably Civ. The idea of the cities, city-base progression, leaders, the passage of time, tile-based, turn-based, building improvements, technologies. A lot of them are very familiar themes to the Civ player." The announce trailer was uploaded on April 12, and the official website has more information. Images: It seems to be very graphically-similar to Civ V, which I like. I don't know about you, but I'm really excited for this game. Knowing Firaxis and the fact that it's a Civ game, I'm confident it will be great. I've never played its space-settling predecessor, but this makes me want to give it a try. What do you guys think?

anyone still play or maybe have played in the past this gem from the creator of Civilization? It's an awesome Civilization like game, but on another planet around our nearest star Alpha Centauri, The game Picks up where those of us who beat Civilization with the Space Colonization victory left off. basically the United Nations Starship Unity, on it's way to alpha centauri suffers a problem mid flight, and ends up dispersing escape pods across a habbitable planet in orbit of Alpha Centauri A. now you must take control of one of the factions on planet and ensure that humanity survives against both it's self and the hostile life on planet. it's great beacuse it's like Civ 2 and civ 3 (basically Civ 2.5) but with a sci-fi/futuristic tech tree, and the best part? Loki Games actually ported it to LINUX! though these days copies are hard to find heh, managed to get my self a copy though for around $50 ouch on the up side after a bit of tweaking and updating I got it to work on my linux box, works best in light weight systems like crunch bang due to them having older daemons and such for compatibility with older hardware, that and the lack of use of compositing, works great on my old linux laptop/terminal down in the comp lab, also works in windows, with updates and patches of course, I reccomend to anyone who likes civilization.
