City-building game(s)

  1. Mud and Blood 2

I used to play a lot of Flash Games in High School and Middle School. Not to many of them have aged well. The fact that a lot of flash games make my PC go nuts and are heavily oriented towards making money nowadays has turned me off from many of them, but there is one that stuck with me that was unlike the rest in its scope and focus. Mud and Blood 2. Play it with the sound on. Playing at school during off hours, in the days before ubiquitous earbuds, I often did not listen to the sounds, but not only are they immersive, but the audio cues you in very much to what might not be obvious just from watching the screen. Of course, many of you familiar with gaming might choose to listen to the sound right away, but it should be said that the number of console games I have owned in my lifetime totals exactly zero, and for years the only game I owned that was not a Jumpstart game (remember those?) was SC4, which is not exactly a game where listening to the sound is a necessary part of the experience. It really struck me because not only did it receive constant updates (final version released was in 2015) since initial release in 2008, but it was one of those games where you can only ever lose. Except not. The point of the game was not to receive an ever higher score (though surviving longer did provide more perks that in turn helped you survive longer, but only just), but to try out new tactics and explore what the game had to offer. You had to outdo yourself, as all score-based games without an ending end up being in terms of gameplay (you can never win Tetris, for instance), but because the game was totally and completely random (and unfair, and brutal, which makes sense given the dev's nickname URB, for unfair random brutality), you needed to prepare yourself for all outcomes, and no one solution would guarantee success in any single particular area. The game defines itself as a sandbox WWII defense game. It's played top down, and is essentially a wave-based RTS. You don't directly control your units' targets, nor is supply a real issue (although you still get supply crates, which do...other things). Moral is a key factor, and your units will frequently ignore your orders (like not moving right away) until the combat situation is favorable...or not. Friendly fire is also a thing--a very brutal factor at that. Units can get pinned by suppressing fire, cower in fear under the enemy onslaught, get wrecked in CQC or even flee the battlefield if a high ranking soldier dies amongst them and their morale becomes unrecoverable. It has a complete wiki here, which I only recommend reading after you play it at least a few times (I recommend about 10, though I didn't find this wiki until years after I discovered the game; there are a lot of hidden mechanics that will make the game immediately more understandable and enjoyable, though I did enjoy it immensely before discovering all the hidden bits). Very few of the graphics in the game are for show, with the exception of weird things on the ground like sand pits and fallen trees; craters act as temporary trenches for minor bullet protection, and rocks block both LoS and explosion AoE. As a rule ahead of time, if you happen to end up playing the game, avoid having more than 6 men exposed on the field at any one moment (not under a camnet or bunker or other hard structure) as doing so will make the game significantly more miserable than it already is, particularly for a newer player. There is some [cartoonish] gore, and some of the soundbytes have profanity (I think more if you understand German, which I do not), though the text of the game itself is 98% clean. I know this is kind of a weird game to post in the forum, but there is so much attention lavished on paid full platform games, and so little given to honestly solid efforts like this one (a sequel is in the works) that are completely free. Almost no [proper] reviews of the game can be found written by non-fans and I figure if someone here can get as much enjoyment out of it as I have (or even just a little bit), then it's a good post, especially since the thing is completely free, and anyways, since when was blowing up a bunch of virtual Nazis not a satisfying experience?
  2. Hi there! I’m Sergio O. from Camel101 and I'm a Sim City lover. I like strategy video games too and I want to share with you Black Talons, an strategy project which we are working for. WHAT IS BLACK TALONS? A new real time tactics game set in a sci-fi universe, featuring a mercenary commander trying to prevail in a ravaged star system. Black Talons is a new incursion on the universe we discovered on Gemini Wars. The game is still in development for Windows, Mac and Linux systems, and more details about the release date will be provided soon. KEY FEATURES Persistent and customizable squads. Deep campaign mode. The actions of the player directly affect the balance of power on the system. There is one main objective to achieve, but there's much more to do. Customizable Battlecruiser. The Battlecruiser serves as the base of operations, and can be customized with weapons or infrastructures that will boost the squad numbers, teleport soldiers or even bombard the battlefield. Faction relations. There are a number of neutral minor factions in the game. These factions will have missions available for contract work. When the player completes missions for a certain faction, the relations will improve with that faction. On the other hand, completing missions against a faction will lower the relations with it. Having good relations allows the player to train or buy units unique to that faction. Having bad relations will make that faction randomly attack the player during missions. Upgradeable and unique (per class) skill tree for all units. 5 worlds with different environments and weather conditions that directly affect the battle: rain, fog, snow, ionstorms and more insane stuff. Different unit classes with specialized roles: Recon, Tactical, Assault, Support, Engineer. Each class can carry a different set of weapons and has its own abilities. Powerful mechs can enter the battlefield with salvaged or bought equipment and weapons. Here we have the a few images of the gameplay which is work in progress. UPDATES Black Talons Teaser! This is our FIRST TEASER showing a quick glance of the mercs fighting in different environments. Enjoy it! 3. anyone still play or maybe have played in the past this gem from the creator of Civilization? It's an awesome Civilization like game, but on another planet around our nearest star Alpha Centauri, The game Picks up where those of us who beat Civilization with the Space Colonization victory left off. basically the United Nations Starship Unity, on it's way to alpha centauri suffers a problem mid flight, and ends up dispersing escape pods across a habbitable planet in orbit of Alpha Centauri A. now you must take control of one of the factions on planet and ensure that humanity survives against both it's self and the hostile life on planet. it's great beacuse it's like Civ 2 and civ 3 (basically Civ 2.5) but with a sci-fi/futuristic tech tree, and the best part? Loki Games actually ported it to LINUX! though these days copies are hard to find heh, managed to get my self a copy though for around $50 ouch on the up side after a bit of tweaking and updating I got it to work on my linux box, works best in light weight systems like crunch bang due to them having older daemons and such for compatibility with older hardware, that and the lack of use of compositing, works great on my old linux laptop/terminal down in the comp lab, also works in windows, with updates and patches of course, I reccomend to anyone who likes civilization.
  4. Hello, Here is a list of ancient and medieval city building games for anyone interested in exploring the ancient city building genre more. The list starts with the original ancient city building series by Impressions Games and Tilted Mill, followed by links to the latest 2d and mobile versions as well as other related game series, and includes independent games in various stages of completion. There is still much potential in the ancient city building genre, for example here is a list of historical ancient city building civilizations for which games haven't been made yet. There have mostly been many Roman, Egyptian, Greek and European themed games. If anyone is familiar with other languages then maybe you can search for games in other countries and contact any developers that may be interested in working on their own version of an ancient city building game and release localized language packs. I also posted a similar thread here in Simtropolis about modern city builder games. As you can see, it seems there have been more attempts at independent projects for modern city builder games than ancient city builder games. I figure there is a cross-over between these games in terms of history, development and interest so if anyone has any ideas for new ancient city builder games as well any relevant entries and links, please post them here or message me and I will add them. Lastly there is a section for links to forums and discussions. Ancient and Medieval city building games: Caesar 2 (1994) Caesar 3 (1998) Knights and Merchants (1998) Pharoah (1999) Cleopatra expansion (2000) Zeus (2000) Poseidon expansion (2001) Emperor (2002) Children of the Nile (2004) Alexandria expansion (2008) Medieval Lords: Build, Defend, Expand (2004) Caesar 4 (2006) Glory of the Roman Empire (2006) Arabian Lords (2007) Imperium Romanum (2008) Grand Ages: Rome (2008) Grand Ages: Medieval (?) Related thread lists These game lists have been cross posted on related gaming forums: A list of ancient city builder games here, here, A list of modern city builder and global civilization builder games: A list of fantasy and sci-fi rts and city builder games here, here, here So some options for new city building games may be the following: - port the classic 2d games onto new systems which will give the developers money for new projects - mod the existing games in some ways such as the Open Caesar 3 project for something different - try to get the original 2d game info to make new games in a similar style independently using the old versions - create new games independently from scratch which will take time if funds and talent is limited, but is certainly possible - it's up to gamers to post on various forums, social networks, and game mod websites to generate interest and potential collaborations - ideally an open source version of a city building game can be made where anyone can go in and mod it to add any historical time periods and civilizations or completely new settings, including ancient, medieval, pre-industrial, modern, post-industrial, alternate history, fantasy, scfi, alien, custom, any specific historical time/culture/location, etc.
  5. Hello, I have compiled a list here of the SimCity series and related games, including the more famous ones as well as independent projects and links to various other related games. Please feel free to mention any relevant games and link this post to other SimCity forums as I will be updating this list over time. Some of the games in the list I found in the forums here. My goal is to make a sort of archive list of any modern city builder games so if you are looking for something older, newer, different, similar, etc you can use this list as a reference. I also recommend checking out the Mobygames database - here is a list of city builder games, merchant/trade builder games and transportation network builder games. If you are into ancient and medieval city building games I have also posted a similar topic in the Heavengames forums here and a copy of that thread as well as a thread of linked threads in the City Builder Games forums here. The list below will contain games from any modern city building genre, as long as there is some kind of minimal amount of building involved. There are a bunch of independent modern city builder games so there is a lot of potential for a new SimCity sequel or new type of game, whether done in a classic 2d style or 3d style, either developed by a big company or independently. One promising example of independent development is the ancient military rts game 0AD, which can be interpreted as a remake of Age of Empires but in 3d, more historically realistic and the game will be fully moddable - so it seems there are still ways that the rts and city building game genres can evolve. Maybe creating a game engine, code, or game that could be custom modded is possible at this point after over a couple decades of various city builders. A game where people could modify the setting to include various modern urban settings such as a pre-Industrial age, early Industrial age, modern age, various post-Industrial age settings, alternate histories, scifi, alien, fantasy and alternate/"what if" past, present, and future settings would be interesting. A recent example of a futuristic scifi/fantasy city-building game is Anno 2070 which is included below. I have added some games in this list which are not directly related to modern city building. For example the Rise of Nations and Empire Earth series are military rts games, but they feature a modern age setting either in an age-progression or standalone-age game. I also added Spore and related games and programs to this list because they are and expanded version from city to global scale building. So I felt it would be interesting to include it here as it might open up some possibilities for new game finds and ideas. As some know, the final Spore game came out to be different from the 2005 video demo, so there is still untapped potential in the genre of biological simulation and global civilization building games. Related thread lists These game lists have been cross posted on related gaming forums: A list of ancient city builder games here, here Also see: A list of fantasy and sci-fi rts and city builder games here, here, here So some options for new city builder games may be the following: - mod the existing games in some ways such as the many SimCity 4 mods for something different - research existing and past attempts at independent games that weren't completed and use some of the data if allowed and/or work on completing them - create new games independently from scratch which will take time if funds and talent is limited, but is certainly possible - it's up to gamers to post on various forums, social networks, and game mod websites to generate interest and potential collaborations - ideally an open source version of a city building game can be made where anyone can go in and mod it to add any historical time periods and civilizations or completely new settings, including ancient, medieval, pre-industrial, modern, post-industrial, alternate history, fantasy, scfi, alien, custom, any specific historical time/culture/location, etc.
