I would recommend not to use versions of system files that you find off the internet, as they usually may contain hidden "features" within them that might give you a virus or malware. Also, crashing your own PC in order to disable driver verification is not really a good idea as 1) why would you do that, and 2) seriously, why? You are just opening up your computer to a boatload of new problems if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Drivers were not the issue that we have with SC4, its the lack of the SafeDisc verification program on the final build of Windows 10. Never mess with your drivers, if you do, it is for a purpose other than what is being discussed here . I personally would not recommend anyone to do this, unless they are absolutely sure of what they are doing, and are a computer wizard of the highest grade . Also, Windows 10 does come with a version of secdrv.sys, but it is unable to preform the tasks of the old safe verification files for whatever reason. Also II, that post was for a technical preview of Windows 10 from April, so there is a chance that that procedure is not up-to-date (Microsoft changed some things in the final build, though most of the changes were minor tweaks to the UI and system files, as we not know, and most of that tweaking was changing what was written in the settings menus in order to trick people into not understanding what all the buttons in the privacy menus on Windows and Edge were talking about in relation to tracking your every move ). Also III, Did you password screen begin to appear slowly after you downloaded that secdrv.sys file from the internet by any chance? Also IV, adding in secdrv.sys files into their respective places won't do anything as Microsoft does not have those files registered on their servers , so those files will not be verified or able to load when rebooted (from what I understand of the new update system, I might be completely wrong). I've already tried doing that but to know avail, using old secdrv.sys files from my version of Windows 8.1 which I still have a copy of on my computer. Also V, yes, older AMD drivers may not work properly with DirectX 12. Also VI, do you think I put in too many "also's"? -

Alright guys, I'm about to do a test and see if I can add in the two SafeDisc files from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and see if I can run SimCity 4. Since no such files or folders exist in Windows 10 (well there is one, but it is located in the SysWOW64 folder), I should be able to add them in without affecting anything else in my system. Wish me luck, I'll report back with my findings. Edit: Well that didn't work. Looks like I'll just have to but a virtual copy of the game . -

Well, I tried to do that, but I think I messed up somewhere (I probably just mistyped something in the command prompt though, but since I'm too lazy to try that more than twice, I just asked google to solve my problems ). So, after I when to google,I found this neat program from tenforums.com. It adds a "Take Ownership" tab in the Context Menu (So it does everything on the command prompt for you . Useful for me, as I'm too lazy and not skilled enough with the command prompt to successfully use those functions on my own, apparently . ) Anyways, all my administrative troubles are over now (unless taking ownership of these files ruins future updates....meh, I'm not too worried about that. I'm just happy I have full control of my PC now.) Oh, If anyone is wondering for a link to the program, I found it on one of tutorials I was looking at after I failed with the command prompt (Well, it's not the tutorial, but a link from the tutorial that I followed) - http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3841-take-ownership-add-context-menu-windows-10-a.html I figure that if I just add a "Take Ownership" tab to the context menu, I will forever be free from having to use the command prompt ever again! I have an eerie feeling that the next update is going to ruin everything though... Edit: I just wanted to add in that I tried using the standard method of changing the owner ship of other folders within the Programs (x86)\Windows folder, and that worked out fine. I'm unsure why it didn't work with the System 32 and WinSxS folders. -

Hello everyone!!! I just found out why we cannot modify our System 32 folder, or anything to do with windows! (I apologize for my language, as I created this little picture last night, during which time I was very, very, very, disappointed with my decision to upgrade to Windows 10. Looks like Big Brother is looking out for us after all! Seriously though, what is this? I tried, for over 20 minutes, to change the administrative privileges so that I would, at minimum, also have full control of my computer. That did not work? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Do I need to go into the dreaded command prompt and do what google tells me to do there? ** **Before anyone asks, yes I attempted to change who the Owner of the folder was was, but to no avail. I will attempt do to this again later on after I have time. Also, this applies to the System 32 Folder as well (possibly even more). -

Does anyone think it would be possible to convert the SC4 CD to and ISO file and somehow delete the two SafeDisc files (SECDRV.SYS), located in ProgramFiles (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps, and on the disc itself? So, theoretically, if the CD was copied to an ISO file, you could just delete these two SafeDisc files and run the game? Or does the executable (SimCity 4.exe on the apps folder and/or RunGame.exe on the disc, which would now be in ISO format) check to make sure these two SafeDisc Files exist and are executed? (This would render my idea useless .) An important question: What is the difference between a digital copy and the disc version of SC4, from the perspective of the SafeDisc/game verification system (or whatever it is called)? If the digital copies do not have the two SafeDisc files, then are the executable to the game still the same or different? Assuming what I theorized above about the executables is true, that they check for the SafeDisc files, would that mean that the digital version of SC4's executables do not check for the SafeDisc files? Would that be the only difference? In that case (and I have a feeling this may or may not be illegal), if you would copy the SC4 disc to an ISO file, you could delete the two SafeDisc files in the game, then, theoretically, get a copy of the executables for the game from someone who bought the game digitally, and SC4 could then run properly on Windows 10? -

Tried that, no luck. I couldn't even make a new folder within the second directory. (Not that I don't wanna go in there or even think about what consequences it could have.) That's a bummer. I think that, with the way Microsoft is heading with its future update system, we might not be able to create a new folder in the directory as doing so might compromise the installation of future Windows Updates (in relation to verifying the integrity of the OS by MS's servers). Either that, or, due to the update, your administrative privileges, much like mine, may have been...erm...for the lack of a better word... compromised (I can't seem to access certain files now as, according to Windows, I'm "lacking" administrative privileges, even though my account is the administrator for my PC. I can still access other administrator only archives in other areas of my computer normally inaccessible by non-administrative accounts. I might need to do some magic with the command prompt to fix this, but that's for later). Off to Google Chrome for a solution!!! (s**** Edge) Edit: Aaaand my search brought me back here... -

Is it possible to copy and paste the two required files for the SafeDisc program from our old Windows OS to Windows 10? Installing Windows 10 backs up your old OS (in my case Win 8.1) in case you want to revert back to it, so I still have copies of all the System 32 files on hand. Currently, secdrv.sys is located in these two locations in my Windows.old backup file: Windows.old\Windows\System 32\drivers Windows.old\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_macrovision-protection-safedisc_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_4e6b3758913c9240 Could copy and pasting the files into their Windows 10 counterpart location solve the issue? Or is my idea completely ludicrous and reflects my horrid understanding of computers accurately? -
Wow, I've really been out of the loop on this one. The last time I visited Simpeg or Simptropolis was about 6 months ago. Now I go to the Simpeg website, hoping to see something new to discover, only to find a clown.... sadly smiling and waving farewell . It is truly saddening to see the loss of such an amazing part of the SC4 community. Though, I'm glad to see that at least some parts of Simpeg will live on, here at Simtropolis and on City-Builders. I hope (and I don't mean to jinx anything) that nothing like what happened to Simpeg happens again to the community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, as I've mentioned above, I've been out of the loop for a while. If it's ok to ask at this point, would anyone be willing to tell me what lead to the demise of Simpeg? From what little information I've collected from by 4 minute glance through the forms, there was something off with a server? (Sorry if I'm in anyway being rude or insensitive to the topic at hand. I'm just a curious person.)
