  1. SC4 Rookie here

I'm also very new to mods and stuff. As recommended above I'd spend some time getting into the game in general to learn the mechanics. One thread that helped me ENORMOUSLY about how to DL and use the custom stuff on this site was boggy's thread I played SC4 without mods for about 2 or 3 months and got kinda bored because I'm old school (like, played the original on Nintendo back in the 90's old school) and still built that same way... SC4 offers way more variety, and until I started reading some threads and downloading some great mods like NAM, started working with the RHW system, etc, I kept trying to do things the old way. Once I discovered this Simtropolis, SC4Devotion and a few others and reading about what other people do, I've become a complete SC4 junkie. Hope you enjoy
  2. AI on what job sims take

apologies if this is the wrong forum for this. Help me understand something. In my main CBD (primarily a mix of med/high density commercial and residential) why do some buildings get abandoned for long commute times when those sims, who have perfectly good jobs all around them with no traffic problems and a well organized subway/bus system still choose to travel by car all the way out to the outskirts of my town to the shopping districts and industrial zones around the suburbs? I always thought sims will take the closest job available? If so, does that mean I have too much residential in my CBD?
  3. AI on what job sims take

These people probably had a job in that city that wasn't available at your main city. You could try to zone some farms. My guess is that they travel in your city after that (after some game-months/years). I have noticed that... I'll have a building that has short commute times for years and then I come back later and it's long commute times... the opposite happens too Strange, how many people travel by car/subway/bus? I'll have to check... unfortunately there will be no SC for me for a few days, got family coming to visit tonight...
  4. Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello, I'm SlimGenre, which (like Rufus Honker) is also an anagram for my name that someone came up with 10 years ago and has just stuck. You may remember me from my forum posts in which every single initial response to the question I've asked begins with the phrase, "this is not the right forum for this question." I'm 32, live in the mountains of Colorado. I also grew up on the original Nintendo SimCity in my younger years, although I've only been playing SC4 for a few months now (I know, 10 years behind the curve)... Discovered something called "STEX" about a month ago and this website called simtropolis where these crazy people are still devoted to this 10 year old game. Proud to now call myself "crazy people" also and thanks to all for the help.

  6. Actually 2 quick questions... First question is a $%&^! question... I know buildings "mature" so to speak, or are razed and rebuilt at least as they grow. I hear people talk about tier/level 5/6/7 buildings, etc. How do you know what tier/level a certain building is? Second question is probably also a $%&^! question. Regarding commercial high density buildings. Most of my residential buildings in my main city are pretty large, housing 3000 people or more. However the commercial buildings in the same area are all still pretty small. Since I was given the option to build a stock exchange, some of the commercial buildings have begun to grow but still no where near what I see in some other peoples pics on the forums. This city tile is about 160k people, my whole region is only about 200k (been working pretty extensively on this one tile and expanding out from there). Commercial demand is very high. Any tutorials on commercial districts I should read? Or does someone have a quick answer as to why my residential is dwarfing my commercial in building size, or is that just how the game works and I should just be patient? Thanks all ps, after I posted this I noticed that it blanked out the word otherwise pronounced as "nube" with two O's
  7. AI on what job sims take

Thank you both. I have a well connected bus and subway in my cbd and highway system from my suburbs to my cbd. Almost all my residential high density in and around the cbd has short commute times. All of my suburbs have short to medium commute times. But there are a few pesky buildings in my cbd who are travelling out of the cbd, past the suburbs, past the industrial complex and all the way to a neighboring farm city to work... why not just move to that small town if you're gonna work there? Oh well, can't expect a game to have perfect AI I guess.
  8. Thank you all, very helpful. My problem is probably that I'm building my city in sections, not the traditional sense of how a city would naturally build itself over time. I've been working on my cbd recently, so likely when I go out and work on other things (more suburbs, low density shopping centers, etc) I'll probably come back to my cbd later and it will have grown in relation to the rest of the city. I rarely pay attention to specific demands, and certainly should. I see high commercial demand, I should probably be finding out what type of commercial is demanded. Also, thank you for the term stage, I guessed Is there a way to know what stage a certain building is?
  9. weird, plenty of ways to get around even if a main thoroughfare is cut somewhere... did you check the traffic congestion? In case you don't know how, click on the box that looks like a bunch of little boxes in a grid (in your screenshot it's the 4th box down between the RCI and your monthly budget) and click on the traffic button. It should show you which roads are congested.
  10. How is it on Windows 7?

great info all thanks. I too run on Win 7 on a quad core and I'm running the Steam version with tons of STEX stuff and no major problems except the two I've heard about often due to the quad core and my monster video card... the rare crash (which I just make sure to save occasionally), and I get a blinking EA Games and Maxis screen when I start up the game, but if I minimize to Windows and open back up it "fixes" the problem. I'm sure there are actual solutions to both these problems, just haven't gone searching for them yet, however great info above to actually fix some of these problems so kudos and thank you.
  11. There really shouldn't be major traffic problems at that few people yet unless there's some simple problem here somewhere. Can you post up some pics? Regardless, it is a good idea to start working bus stops early in the game, which relieves a lot of pressure on your roads and rail stations, which can help you move industrial areas away from the city and still get people to them to work and freight to where it needs to be Low wealth residents prefer public transportation anyway. Also upgrading from street to road to avenue or a network of one-ways through inner-city blocks, but again, a city of 6k shouldn't be having major traffic problems yet. Lets see them pics.
  12. What map in the STEX has the most large city tiles?

I think you can make any map into large tiles only. Open up the file in ms paint or something and then color the whole thing blue. Then let it render and it should be ALL large tiles. I haven't tried this yet with a downloaded map rendering from grayscale, but I have made my own maps the old fashioned way in-game and you can set all tiles to large.
  13. Can't find it?... Ask here!

I'm looking for a sidewalk mod that connects like a road to business, obviously so I have have a sidewalk in front of my businesses. I have a few different sidewalk ploppable downloads from STEX that I like but they don't really function correctly. I've found a work-around to this by placing a second road in front of my blank blue commercial tiles, wait for the business to grow up and then destroy the road and put the sidewalk in, but if I plant the sidewalk first, nothing grows on the commercial tiles, I'm guessing because it thinks there's no road attached? Does anyone have any suggestions or a link to a nice sidewalk mod (I want to put sidewalks alongside my main avenue/boulevards in my CBD) that acts like a road so that businesses can be zoned on them? Thanks.

  15. New around here

Hi, new here, learning the forums and have a quick etiquette question and a game question. First, can I delete a post I've made? I double-posted a question in two forums because I wanted to get it in the right place and then went back to delete the original, can't figure out how to do so. Second, I have the steam version of Deluxe. I just build a new comp, is there any way I can save a city I'd been working on on my laptop and pick up where I left off on my desktop, and vice versa? Thanks all Indiana Joe answered my first question on another thread, still curious about using multiple computers.
  16. New around here

thanks guys, I think flash drive is my quickest option (don't have a cloud storage account with anyone and I'm on a 5.0 dl and 1.0 ul connection, so it probably would take a while anyway.
  17. Can't find it?... Ask here!

Has anyone put together a thread of the "must have" mods? I just started messing with NAM and the RHW system and love it (i know, it's 2013, I'm late to the game)... what are some other base mods like NAM that are "must have's??" Texture, night lighting, water, etc... Thanks all

the crossing lanes in the middle is brilliant, nice way to save space.
  20. OK, so the games old, but believe it or not I just discovered NAM fairly recently (yes, I know it's 2013). I'm learning how to make my own interchanges now, and there's a piece that all the guides tell me to use and for petes sake I can't find it anywhere... these pieces are the "to-elevated" and "to-ground" to transition for overpasses, etc... I have clicked on and tabbed through, I think everything at this point and I can't find those pieces anywhere... plz help, where are they?? thank you all
  21. sorry, new to forums, will be happy to delete other thread if you tell me how... again, <-- new here... although I usually only ever make the same mistake once. I could have sworn I'd checked the transitions tab, but apparently not... thank you though... I'll get more used to the forums and post in appropriate locations
