http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/sim-city-5/1224978p1.html SimCity Disappointment: You Won't Be Able to Save, Destroy, and Reload Your City By Dan Stapleton | Jun 4, 2012 The drawbacks of online connectivity have already started killing my buzz. The new SimCity looks amazing, and I'm certainly still looking forward to it, but it comes with at least one major downer. As anyone who's played one knows, one of the simplest pleasures of any SimCity game, dating back to the 1989 original, is the consequence-free "What if?" scenario. The kind where you obliterate your city by triggering an apocalyptic wave of fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, and monster attacks, then time-warp it back to pristine condition by loading a saved game. When I asked Lead Producer Kip Katsaelis if the 2013 SimCity would allow that same pleasure in its Glass Box-powered cities, the answer was a simple, disappointing "No." The online connectivity Maxis has built in means that reloading saved games will be impossible, even when no one else has a city in your region. The caveat, Katsaelis says, is that there will be a cheat mode that will disable achievements and let you quickly and easily build large cities for the purpose of wrecking. That's some consolation, I suppose -- after seeing a brief demonstration of a giant bowling ball inflicting physics-based damage to skyscrapers, I am very interested in watching cities get demolished in this new engine. But this is a prime example of how the benefits of online connectivity in new games can deprive gamers of some of the things we love most about their classic predecessors. Disasters will be far less fun if seeing their effects means potentially losing hours of progress. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ...I still wonder why there are still people who think we are just "whining" about nothing.

Hello, Mayors! I’m Lead Gameplay Scripter Guillaume Pierre, also known as MaxisGuillaume on the forums, and I’m here today to talk about an often requested feature by fans: sandbox mode. Choosing to set a new region in sandbox mode is like entering a gentler version of SimCity. Each city starts with a truck-load of Simoleons, with the possibility to add more via a key press, and although the simulation functions just like in the regular game, certain “pushback” systems can be toggled on and off at any time. Say you don’t want fires to burn down your beautifully-planned suburb? It’s as easy as hitting “Alt F” on your keyboard to eliminate all fires. Don’t want earthquakes or meteors to strike in the middle of your downtown? Just press “Alt D” and you’ll be safe from all disasters! Of course, when you’re being granted such great powers, you’re also opting out of the competitive aspects of SimCity: You can’t earn achievements, participate in challenges or the leaderboards, and all your trades to the global market don’t count towards setting the prices of goods. On the other hand, all the cooperative and creative aspects of the game still shine: Region play and chat with friends for the social players, screenshot and video capture for the story-tellers, and a remarkable learning opportunity for beginning players. With all the buildings in the game unlocked from the get-go, sandbox mode is going to be a terrific way to explore the content the game has to offer, study the best way to lay out your city in a care-free environment, and test out strategies before applying them for a challenge or to climb up the leaderboards in the regular game.

For hundreds of years, Simkind labored under the belief that the world was round. But then, as any schoolchild will tell you, Simlumbus set off to sail around the world in his three ships; the Simna, the Simta & the Santa Simria. He sailed off the edge, into the Abyss and was never heard from again. And that's why nothing is named after him today.

One day my Sims will ask important questions about the universe too. They are still debating whether the earth is round or flat.

Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Hellken replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Just some suggestions. I don't know how the game handles calculations but why not just include an option for the level of simulation? ie. 1 - 10? 1- lowest 10 - highest Keep single player 100 % offline with an option to connect only if you need to. Besides what really annoys me about the "always - online" requirement is that you cannot load a save. It's online so everything is probably permanent. -

You can't have both unfortunately. I highly doubt Maxis would really allow in depth modding considering that this game is online. It might be tantamount to "cheating" the leaderboards. One of the great things about offline SC4 is that you can always create a test region to test a mod. If anything goes wrong, you can always load your previous save. Since this game is online, everything you do is permanent. You cannot load saves. You cannot create a test region if you max out your save slots. Sandbox mode is OK. I just wish it was offline without save restrictions.

I have a feeling sandbox would be okay if there is an option to play offline. Since you are not connected to the market and leaderboard why should is it still always - online?

Thanks, Fox. Beautiful custom lots! It looks so neat. Your CJ looks very lively. ----------- PS. I don't use Gobias's Sidewalk Mod but it's perfect for medium rise cities: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2850

SimCity 2013 Beta: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Hellken replied to lopes8070's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
To be fair they made raising the land value harder in this game, thus making it more challenging to get the skyscrappers. They didn't need to change that. SC4 got that down Perfectly. It had a very good "feel" on which areas where low, medium wealth, or high wealth. It was not easy to get R$$$ sims but it was already balanced. I really don't want to go back to SC3K.
