Midtown Manhattan (Part 1)
Our tour of Midtown Manhattan begins today with a wide variety of scenes from the past & present - we'll be covering the areas surrounding Madison Square Garden, Central Park, Times Square, & a few more of the city's most iconic landmarks. Enjoy!
The first scene is a look at the massive Pennsylvania Station back in the 1910s. Unfortunately, this masterpiece wouldn't last forever, as it was razed in the early 60s to make way for Madison Square Garden.
Here we see a scene from the recently completed Madison Square Garden in the early 1960s - and to this day, it's one of the city's most important entertainment venues.
We move forward to the 1980s with another look at the same area with the iconic Empire State Building in view.
A nighttime view of the neighboring Hotel Pennsylvania, one of New York's most famous hotels.
One more look at the surrounding area with the Garment District (also known as the Fashion District) & Nelson Tower in view.
The New York Times Building was completed in 2007 and towers some 1,046 feet above the surrounding cityscape. Here we see a nighttime mosaic of the building standing tall above the surrounding Garment District.
We now move towards the areas near Central Park for our next couple of scenes. The CitySpire Center, Metropolitan Tower, & Carnegie Hall Tower were all completed in the late 80s/early 90s and are some of the area's most recognizable skyscrapers.
The western edge of Central Park is known for the many famous hotels and apartments that line Central Park West. The San Remo has been an iconic sight here since completion in 1930.
The late 1960s brought another wave of construction to Midtown Manhattan. Here we see the international styled General Motors Building under construction in 1967.
Once it was completed, it towered over nearby landmarks like the Plaza Hotel & Central Park and quickly became one of the area's most recognizable sights.

A nighttime view of the General Motors Building & neighboring Solow Building, as seen today.
Completed in 1989, the distinctively postmodern One Worldwide Plaza is an important commercial and residential complex in the city's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.
Another view of the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in the mid 1970s.
It's the "center of the universe" - Times Square is located in the heart of New York City and is it's most important intersection, filled with countless restaurants, shops, flashing signs, and entertainment venues. Here we see a shot of the area from above.
For our last couple of scenes, we'll be taking a look at the famous Empire State Building - completed in 1931, it was the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years. Here we see a scene with overlooking Bryant Park in the late 1970s.
Another view of the Empire State Building today.
