Just a quick (probably easy) question.

So, I've always loved Sim City 4 (I play the deluxe edition) and I especially love the fun that modding brings to the game. I frequently find myself browsing user made content on sc4devotion.com and of course simtropolis.com. I have also always wanted to create a couple for myself and the rest of the community to enjoy. So the question is, where do I start? Where do I start when it comes to making a mod, ect, ect? Much appreciated, thanks!!

There is a bit of a learning curve.  If you've never used a 3D editor before the process will take about a week of spare time or less.

First, go to the Turbosquid web site and download gMax 1.2.

While you are there, pick up the Tutorial and the associated files.  It makes an animated war club, but it is very good, and detailed.

Install gMax and set it up.  You need this in order to load the BAT (Building Architect Tool) which is a gMax game pack.

Now, go and download the BAT from the SC4Devotion site.  You should also pick up the other downloads on this page.  And while you are on this site, backup and get the Lot Editor and the two associated plugin downloads BldgProps_vol1 and ..._vol2.  These are considered to be default packages and you will need them if you haven't got them already.  The other tools are including in the BAT download.

Install the BAT.  It won't install if you haven't got gMax properly set up.

Pick up the BAT Essentials Tutorial.  It is probably OK to save the URL and just keep it open in a tab in your browser.  The link is for part 1.  Pick up the others as needed from the Omnibus.  If you are feeling masochistic you could pull them all and save them as HTML files.

Now, run the gMax tutorial.  After this you'll be feeling pretty good about gMax, so now, close gMax and open the BAT (which opens gMax in game pack mode).  Start working on the BAT Tutorial.  The rest is inevitable.

If you want to ask questions or discuss points, there is a forum here.

Have fun, enjoy learning a new method of very high level programming (yes, it is programming), and you'll feel more at home with your computer than before.  The programming aspect is completely hidden, so don't worry about it other than knowing that you are creating code to draw the images, but it is out of sight.
