Heh, Monument Valley with flat water. It definitely looks interesting. Canyonlands needs a bit more open space to torture those off-road vehicles.

It looks as if your height map had only two steps. No idea what went wrong or whether that's the usual outcome.

Hi David

Looks to me like you've got a decent 3RRian vibe going here. C:S couldn't get a bigger blessing. I myself have dabbled for about a month with the game, but while I enjoyed some aspects of it, I have numerous complaints at this moment, some of which I feel are beyond fixing by mods. Not least I'm still too impressed by the pace of content creation for SC4, which leads me to another thing. I'm in some ways surprised to see you've turned away from the old game in a time when its railways are in better shape than ever (not to brag--this is largely due to the efforts of people other than me). Frankly, most everything is in better shape. This is of course not to get on your back--just a genuine point of wonder.

I'll always be grateful for the support you gave me when I first kicked off the RealRailway project, so I feel thoroughly obliged to wish you not only luck, but that this game serves your imagination as well as our beloved old game!

Cheers

Willy

Just realized its been a few weeks since you last posted, hope things are going ok in the real world.

He posted C:S-related stuff on the Steam Workshop just yesterday, so I guess, whatever the reason for the absence was, it's on the way to being back to normal.

Hi there... Late to the game but really REALLY enjoy this CJ. Well done, David!

Is David's name the same on the workshop as it is on here? I was hoping that he had a collection of the various mods and props he had used in this CJ.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

    I aten't dead.

My wife Heather has been seriously ill since around the first of the year.  We have been in Seattle while she receives treatments at the Swedish Medical Center, and are hoping to be back to Alaska mid-April.  I'll admit to being pretty down about the situation- I just haven't haven't had the heart to come over here to ST and tell everyone that I have no way to move forward at this point with TRR because Cities: Skylines won't run on the laptop I have with me.

One bit of good news- before I left Alaska I ordered the following to upgrade my desktop:

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 80+ GOLD, 850W ECO Mode Fully Modular NVIDIA SLI and Crossfire Ready 10 Year Warranty Power Supply 220-G2-0850-XR

    ASUS STRIX Radeon R9 390X Overclocked 8 GB DDR5 512-bit DisplayPort HDMI 1.4a DVI-I Gaming Graphics Card

I left these parts at my local computer shop with instructions to add an additional 16 GB of RAM to the current 16GB and another fan while they were doing the installation- I didn't have time before I left.  So C:S should really fly when I get back.

Missing everyone here- thanks for understanding.

    David

Well, here I am, back in Alaska after over three months living out of a suitcase.  Thanks everyone for the well-wishes sent to Heather.  She is recovering, but it will be a slow process.

I picked up my computer a couple of days after I arrived back home.  Everything works incredibly well, including Cities: Skylines.  But I do have a problem- I'm hoping that someone already knows the answer.

You might recall I was working on a CJ prior to my rather abrupt departure.  Doing a lot of forestry work.  Well, I held my breath during the boot up process keeping my fingers crossed that no updates to the game might have killed the TRR map in the process.  All looked well... huge sigh of relief... untill I looked in the southwest corner, which was the last place I had been planting trees.

    VLmzLC.png

What the heck is this yellow stuff?  I zoomed in closer...

    la0TFX.png

    ...and closer.

    IAytk4.png

Kind of like a selective autumn is happening.  The above pic shows an area right in the corner of the map that is not affected.  That's because I started there and worked outwards over the last few weeks of the end of last year.  This is one of the last areas where I was planting my forests.

    eled9g.png

So what is this stuff?  Whatever it is, it's not a tree, as you can see from these last close-ups.

    ZlbUMt.png

    Fs12Ve.png

My guess is that there's some sort of an ID conflict involving some of the last trees I planted.  I can take the time to look by trial and error, but if anyone simply knows the answer, please give me a heads up.  I'd like to know of any way to easily remove this stuff, too, if one is out there.  There's quite a lot of it, and bulldozing is a very tedious process, not to mention the need to more or less replant the affected forest area.

Thanks in advance if you can help.  I'm looking forward to getting back to TRR during the next couple of weeks, and to getting this CJ up and running again.

Good to hear that Heather is recovering and you're back to Cities:Skylines.  A lot has happened to the game in your absence, mostly good things.

I'm not sure what those ruined pieces are, although I assume it was a tree at some point.  You might want to pick up Better Bulldozer from the Steam Workshop, that will hasten the cleanup process.

Welcome back, David! Glad to hear Heather is on the road to recovery. Sending her all my best wishes.

That yellow stuff looks a bit like dried grass or wheat. You haven't got a mod that adds either of those, have you? Hope you manage to get it sorted. Can't wait to see this awesome CJ back up and running. :)

Hey David, welcome back! I'm glad to hear Heather is recovering as well.

I agree with gfv1974. It looks like this asset http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=550980861&searchtext=

Hehe, first post here! I really like, what you did here, especially I understand your concerns about rail bridges ingame... :D

Related to the problem with trees changing into other plants: I have the same problem, not only with this wheat but with a lot of plants. I´ve asked in the technical help section but got no answer. So I deleted the related plants and now I can´t load the save again, everything is floating...

Good to see you back and to hear that Heather is on the mend, can't help with C:S still haven't got a computer that can play it properly which is why you find me visiting here its going to be the closest I come to the game for quite some time to come, While I still play SC4 its mainly for RTMT stuff and also the CB website was gifted all of Paeng's files as he has moved on to other things and they all need pictures, descriptions and dependencies, etc so quite busy what with one thing and another

.... I need more spare time

Yeah, I had an issue where some of my plants were replaced by other plants when I subscribed to a new tree asset on the workshop. I think it was a bug with the unlimited trees mod, but it got fixed. There might be a fix to put them back on the workshop page.

Welcome back! Best of luck to Heather and you.

I also had the same problem with the unlimited tree mod as you have. That's the main reason why the outer areas of my map are mostly treeless and I can stay below the normal limit on 25 tiles.

So hello again.  I've taken, with the exception of a post last June, an 18 month break from here, in case you were paying attention.  But, if not, that's okay too.

A lot of things happened.  Cities: Skylines basically stopped working for me around January of last year.  I stalled, hoping that things would return to the normal I had come to know and love.  I played around with the idea that I could create a heightmap of Three Rivers Region and import it into the game when it got better, but that proved to be too big a challenge while I was tending to my seriously ill wife Heather while we were out of state living out of suitcases for months and months.  On my return, as noted in the June post, I found that my Jessamine map was even worse than it looked initially.  Trying to do anything with it showed that it was hopelessly corrupted.  I was pretty burned out by the situation and everything else that was going on, so I decided to take a break and do something a little different

So after bringing Heather's mom up to Alaska to take over caregiver duties, I took a bike ride.  That is a very long story I won't take the time to tell here.  If you are interested to learn more, you can check out a blog I did to document the ride at www.b2bbiketrip.com [linkie].  Suffice it to say that, in a little less than three months I completed a solo unsupported ride from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Key West, Florida, riding about 3,600 miles/5,800 kilometers in the process.  I had a great time!

    IMG_3588.JPG.d11ac9571215ed0e818c92bee17344a3.JPG

Back in November, I didn't even bother to fire up C:S.  I had other things to do, and did them.  A couple of months ago, I finally started following a Cities: Skylines facebook group, Skylines Nation - A Cities: Skylines Guild [linkie], and began to edge back into the game.  I still couldn't open Jessamine, so I began working in the game's Map Editor, creating a custom terrain to use as a sandbox while I learned about all that had developed and happened in my year+ hiatus.

    59384a7ee8e5d_CSIlovethisgame014.thumb.jpg.b04f014fb3140f46e75c4516aeb53eb9.jpg

I was floored by how far the game had come over that time.  Many of the things I had wished for when I was working on Jessamine had come to pass, and the extent to which the folks modding the game had addressed limitations and shortcomings was simply amazing.

    59384b6e450c6_CSIlovethisgame009.thumb.jpg.641aa1753eb8101858cfe1c8142b39cf.jpg

So I just sort of hung back, trying to learn how to use all this new stuff.  I was, frankly, daunted by the prospect of recreating Jessamine from scratch, but if I had my choice about what to do, that's what I wanted to do.

Another long story short.  My new custom terrain, just as I was starting to really get into things, also became corrupted.  I'm pretty sure it was caused by my indiscriminate loading, many at a time, of the assets I wanted to start using.  I was pretty devastated.  But this time I decided to start a new sandbox map pretty much right away based on all the new things I'd learned, and I resolved to approach adding things to the game much more carefully.  The result is Arkadia Valley, which you see here.

Please note that this is still a sandbox and is still hugely incomplete.  I have no intention of doing anything with it other than learn how to play the game competently and to use it as a testbed for ideas I have that are within my scope of competence.  But it looks pretty good close up.

    59384f766968d_CSLovethisgame77.thumb.jpg.8e31e8ddeba45c23d90d843eff35c2b3.jpg

I've apparently reached the byte limit for screenies in a post.  I'll continue this, then, later on today or tomorrow and fill you in on my plans.

    Cheers!

    David

I'm glad to see You, David *:thumb:

My first emotion - this is SC4 final. Where 3RR?

I lost You - David. My SANTANA ISLAND live with Your ideas from 3RR...

And You brought down my hopes with 3RR. But the fact SC4 is alive and will live. I think You were one of my teachers

I think 3D games - this a way to end. Ten years ago I tried this with Rail Road - Final was zero...*:D

Good Luck  and Great Health for You and Your family !!!

TRR now or 3RR in eternity??? *:D
