Thanks everyone for the offer of files etc.   We do appreciate it.

The priority at the moment is to get the PLEX set up on the STEX, with what is already here, and then we will look at what is missing and what we still need.

I remember downloading almost the entire CDK from the PLEX. I've been gone for a long time, so I don't know what happened. What damaged the site?

It makes me sad to see SimPeg go. I was able to download some amazing content from there as well as here and I have to say; every file was of unparalleled quality. I will keep looking at the new PLEX section of the Exchange and I am looking forward to seeing more of these diamonds being added over time.

And to everyone who has worked so hard to allow us to use these files for our games, thank you!

SimPeg is indeed part of SimCity 4 history, it's a shame it's going to end. I remember years ago when I started to play SC4 I downloaded all those lovely packs of docks, trees, etc. Anyway, you made history! Good luck to SimPeg staff to their new projects outside SimCity.

I'll miss homer spinning in a circle, the dancing hotdog, the crazy guy with the horse head, the creepy clapping guy that stared at me, and the angry man smashing his keyboard. I will not miss the incredible shrinking pyramid. I always had to refresh the site when it popped up. Seeing it made me lose my grip on reality and feel like I had to puke.

Losing everything else pretty much totally sucks too.

I can only say, thank you to all the amazing members from Simpeg, all the content from that page was one of the first reasons I started to play Simcity 4 :'(

    Oh! the memories.

I'm grieving. SImpeg was indeed my home away from home, had been for almost a decade. I cannot believe it ended like this, it's too... stupid. I'm glad some of the content can be saved and that we'll have a little place of our own on Simptropolis but -- forgive me, guys-- it just won't be the same. And thinking of those wonderful CJs lost !!! Paeng's, Simcoug's, NBVC's, and many others ! That is as much a loss as that of the tutorials or custom content (which can be reconstituted).

BTW I also have some stuff -- I used to download images more than weblocs in a HOW TO [do this or that] folder.

(and yes, some stuff can be found on Wayback, I followed your URLS, catty,... but the PICTURES are  lost  (Or are they ?)

    That's just... argh.

Anyway, good to know that some stuff might be be retrieved somewhere.

I didn't even realize how many Simpeg files I had until reading through this forum. SPAM was one of the first mods I downloaded as a wide-eyed teenager who discovered for the first time that SC4 has a massive modding community. Thanks to everyone over there for making my cities that much better.

I think we all are, I think from memory SimPeg was the second site I joined after I finally stopped lurking on this site, as for the Wayback I did find some of the missing pictures, but they seem to have been saved separately to the topics they belonged to  :(

The website was truly a blessing! My cities wouldn't be nearly what they are without the graciousness of those that created and posted the content on said site. Deeply sorry that this event took place but hopeful the legacy will live on here at Simtrop...

This is a severe blow. Loved that site, used to love trawling the New Sorgun CJ. Just one question tho, is Bipin contactable anywhere else? I only ever saw him on SimPeg, and I still want the highway walls he was workin on...

Definitely a blow to the SimCity 4 community! Being the stroller that I am, I loved going through the forums, reading the new developments on the dedicated mods' pages or just.. reading the news and laugh with the laid-back and cozy attitude of the website. That atmosphere is what will be missed the most. :(

Does anyone have any screen shots of the forums and the general look of the website? Maybe someone can start a thread where we can share those?

Unfortunately, I don't actually have any of those saved ( :( ), but the Wayback links posted on page 1 of this topic capture a little of that look.  Granted, the pictures don't seem to load, but the interface is there.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Although I know it's incomplete, clicking on that Wayback link for MountainView made me feel better.  It felt good to at least get to look at that interface and see some good conversations in the forums between members one more time, even if they may have happened years ago.  I'm telling you, between SimPeg going offline and a popular image website going to the dogs and essentially turning some CJ's, BAT threads, etc. into books with the pictures cut out, it's been a rocky last couple of years for this community.  We've gone through the hard times before, though, so all I can say is that when you're sinking like a stone, carry on, just as the song says.

BiPin has been very quiet of late, I heard some rumblings about moving over to C:S instead, in any case he has an account on SC4D you might be able to contact him here. I've a pre-release set of the models (obviously I can't distribute) which were all offset for some reason so it's no easy task to make them usable?

If you are in the Wayback and you click on a link in a site it has saved ... but it hasn't saved that particular page on the site it will offer to show you everything that it has saved for that site, in SimPeg case that's over eight thousand records most of which having taken a brief wander thru is pictures from the PLEX.

This seems to be the last time the Wayback was able to get a good backup of the site after that it started having problems

    http://web.archive.org/web/20120724124209/http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php

To be honest I think your best bet is to hope that someone has made backup copies of something you need.

    -catty

PS: I still can't believe there were no backups taking place, alright my site is smaller, but my last backups were

Today = 3mb zipped file (forum messages, etc)

Sunday = 639mb zipped file (in addition to daily file backup of pictures, etc)

Monthly = 1.26GB zipped file (in addition to above, the CBEX is backed up)

Even though SimPeg had many hundreds of files, I would be stunned to learn the entirety of the site's hard drive usage would be more than 10 some odd gigabytes. It confounds, indeed. I can only imagine that the site was being backed up by the host, thus why Pegasus wasn't doing it himself, and the backup server died at the same time the main one did.

The more I hear of the event, it looks like destruction of the building, probably in a fire.  This is one of the real dangers with colocated backup servers.  One of my customers when I was still working had a network system with a backup site across town from their head office.  Both sites shared the load, but if anything happened to one, either could pick up the full load.  These were mainframes and they cost the company something in the middle seven figures, each.

It doesn't have to have been a catastrophic event, you get's what you pay for and all that, only takes one dead drive to kill everything on it. Ultimately redundancy costs money, the more secure your data the higher the price, perhaps backup simply wasn't part of the deal. Whatever happened though, we can do little more than speculate, I think there must be a backup of sorts, where else do you think the PLEX on the STEX files are going to come from?

However, as others have said, the real loss here is not the Plex contents, one way or another that was never really likely to be lost in the either. It's the countless articles, tips + advice, fantastic CJs, but bigger still the community itself that is no more, that hole will not be so easy to fill.

WHy not find a way to get the community back together ?

Well you know, or at least you did if you received my PM over at CB that I'm happy to set up a group (mini-website) over here for my fellow SimPeg users

    https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/26-city-builders-website/cb-groups

It can be public (anyone can join and view the contents), semi-private (you can see the group exists, but you either have to be invited or your request to join accepted by a member of the group before you can see the contents) or completely private (only the members of the group knows its there).

Thing is a private forum is really not that different to a separate website in terms of functionality.

Creating a web page, hosting it and paying for a domain will involve some start up and on-going costs before you begin. The thought crossed my mind, but without wanting to sound gloomy I'm just not sure there is any demand to make such a thing a worthwhile endeavour. SimPeg was very quiet before it disappeared, here and SC4D are also very quiet of late too. Since it seems unlikely that any such site would end up hosting content/tutorials and all the bells and whistles as it were, you are left with little more than a forum. In that sense what is the difference between a private forum on another website and a totally independent site? Given Catty's involvement with the community and reputation, at least it would be a stable home for the time being and doesn't require a concerted effort to get going.

Being a member of SimPeg was a great honor and opportunity. More than just a great mod exchanger, it was also a cool and very friendly community with plenty of nice guys and funny moments. I already miss SimPeg and I thank it for all the memories.
