I found some ground level photos, and yeah, its really that red!

It was supposed to be a hotel, but it's been standing there for about ten years with no activity in it, aside from the facilites you'll find at any old rest stop. My theory is that the Chinese government holds foreign criminals in it.

Seems like a perfectly charming Upper East Side neighborhood of BATable w2w buildings.  Who knew that located in the basement here was Saddam Hussein's secret soundproofed torture chamber, where expatriates, critics, and asylum seekers in the U.S. who had been foisted off America's streets as hostages could be taken to be killed.  Reportedly, bodies where then cut apart, stuffed into diplomatic parcels, and smuggled back to Iraq without inspection under the protective cover of the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations.

So closely packed, yet no one can hear the screams.  Surely, that can't have happened here.  Just think then of what goes on in the Chinese, Russian, and North Korean embassies!  Or even the American, British, and French embassies...where is Liam Neeson with his very particular set of skills when we need him?

This abandoned eyesore lies at just a stone's throw of the renewed Alexanderplatz in Berlin. It housed the  State Administration for Statistics of the German Democratic Republic and a Stasi office at its top floors. It has been abandoned ever since the disbandment of the GDR in 1990. Those who have broken into the building discovered a chunk of space, of prime real estate, trapped before the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Nowadays it sports a huge "STOP WARS" graffiti on its front facade.

As a cultural note, if you have watched the Oscar-winning German movie "The Lives of Others", that's the building Dreyman talks about at the beginning of his article: "The state office for statistics on Hans-Beimler street counts everything; knows everything: how many pairs of shoes I buy a year: 2.3, how many books I read a year: 3.2 and how many students graduate with perfect marks: 6,347. But there's one statistic that isn't collected there, perhaps because such numbers cause even paper-pushers pain: and that is the suicide rate".
