Epic fail...or not :)))

I was trying to build an underwater tunnel using the "setsealevel" cheat. Well i manage to build a tunnel...sort of :))) Actually there are 2 tunnles and an avenue :))) The problem is that the avenue is underwater :))) But i don't know by what magic it is fully functional. It is used and also i can drive automata :)))

That is quite interesting. I've never used the sea lvl cheat, but will use this technique when I do need to create underwater tunnels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chzL0eYQpME You might be able to use this with a better outcome.

when you use that cheat be carefull because if you have brodges in the city when you reenter the city for the water to reaper the bridges are demolished so you need to redo them

Tunnels also often share the same fate, especially those that cross water. I don't recommend using the setsealevel cheat for doing that.

I got myself a new terrain mod. (Probably some GPU crash resulting from putting my laptop in hibernate.)

Not really an oddity but I had to share it because I like it so much; I even had to make this building historical.

House Nr. 6: "We are not!"

The masses: "Shshsh."

Hal, that's what happens when you minimize the game or put it in the background while saving. Took me a while to figure that out as well.

Apparently my small farm town's planning commission decided it would be good to build 10 20 story skyscrapers along the main street.

I made it into a meme.

One of the Maxis annoyances that happens to me quite often, too... Small villages or suburbs with skyscrapers in the center, growing from medium-density commercial zones. However, when I'm only laying low-density commercial zones, I'm only getting small shops.

This is how the game handles freight trains. The same freight station sends some of the freight trains the east route (to the top) and some other trains the south route (to the right). Actually, this looks realistic (if it weren't for the fact that the city to the east hasn't been developed yet at all) - but from an in-game perspective this doesn't make sense at all.

Translations:

Schiene: railway track

Passagierzug: passenger train

Frachtzug: freight train

It does actually make sense for the game. The only thing the game wants to do with freight is sending it to the edge of the city. Then it disappears. Forever. Nothing happens with it, it's just for show. You'll never see freight coming into a city. The reason why some freight goes east and some south is that some industry is probably closer to the east, and other is closer to the south. The game just chooses the shortest way out :)

(I know that it's just for show.) Wouldn't that still mean that all the freight trains would take only one of the routes since the distance from the freight station to one edge is always greater than the distance to the other edge? Or does the game calculate the distance from the industrial building to the edge in plots and tells the freight cars/trains from these buildings to drive to that direction, no matter what? Or does the game simply take the shortest route in km while disregarding the speed that freight traffic can drive on that route?

I think the game takes the distance between the building and the edge.

Has to do with the destination finder, which runs before the pathfinder (the engine that actual determines how traffic gets to its destination). You'd think it'd make more sense to have the two more closely related/work together, but I guess computing restraints in 2002...

Also, since network speeds decrease with increased traffic, this may play a small part in the destination of warehouses that are close to each other but heading different directions...at the very least you can get some freight automata on both rail lines this way (w/o generators).
