Collins Place is nearly ready, just a couple of things to fix up...

 

I think I mentioned in an earlier post I'm having trouble making nightlights in 3DS Max 2012. The lighting system seems to behave quite differently from 2010. The two main things are -

 

The self illuminated night windows method doesn't really work the same way anymore. The lit windows look like they are stuck on the outside of the building. Not convincing at all. To get around this I invented a new technique, not exactly ground breaking but I think it looks pretty effective. Let me know what you think...

 

The other thing is the glare is really powerful in 2012. I used to use a spread of 6. Now that yields a mini-sun with glare-fog. I'm now using 0.8 with less heavier streaks. I think it's pretty good?

 

So, things to fix up are -

• Looks like I inadvertently forgot to put textures on the South-West corner of the base!
• I think I need more life inside the large glass canopy at the rear of the building (No idea how to do that )
• The super bright light at the base of the stairs is a bit ominous... its calling... people.. go into the light!
• Anything else?

No worries, that happens from time to time if you're on a slow connection. I have deleted the duplicate posts for you. However, shouldn't you be able to delete your own posts, too?

 

@ red: Other than the things you pointed out yourself, I don't really see any problem. Well, maybe the red light beacon on top looks a bit like a large ball. I wonder whether it might be better to make it smaller and/or use the corresponding Lot Editor prop instead. But of course, that's just nitpicking and nothing that really matters much. Great job!

Looks amazing! I love the glass on the base and also the one on the roof!

There really isnt anything that leaps into the eye that needs improving.

In terms of finetuning you could maybe see if some of the windows on the base are lit up a bit too strong, and also some of the windows on the tower are quite bright.

And maybe it's worth considering adding a tad more color variety to the nightwindows on the tower, at the moment white is the predominant color.

But those points are really minor and probably a matter of taste only.

During day, I think the tower should be grey instead  of  brown, that's more realistic.

Um, have you seen RL photos? Collins Place seems to be pretty brown (generally speaking) in Real Life too, so I'd say it's already pretty realistic.

Andisart, I'm probably pretty happy with the tower windows, but I agree some of the base lights need to be dimmed slightly. There's a bit of strong glare happening.

Having said that.. by some bizarre coincidence I was in that building today.. seriously .. how freaky is that? I was on level 5 which is the same level as where the glass roof at the back of the building is, and you can see out of the windows at all of the rigging and lights, and down into the plaza and all the shops and cafes below. Besides that, I got a good look at the facade colour and its actually more of an apricot colour (and definitely not grey :kitty: ) so I think i might lighten the facade a little bit and add a bit more pink into it.

Your buildings are taking over my cities!!  Thank you for the amazing creations and the level of detail is beautiful.

 

Being from Adelaide I'm quite jealous Melbourne is being recreated, but it's good to see some Aussie support. 

 

I love the work on the river fronts and that is what has inspired me in my recent downtown I'm creating.
