Simtropolis 7.3.3 Bugs/Issues Report Thread

I hope this is the right thread to report this, so here it goes:

Lately I was using Chrome (latest official, not Chrome Beta) on my Android phone to access this forum on the go. It was a real pain, because the page kept loading and displaying for a while but eventually it always ended with the "Oh Snap!" message ("page could not be displayed") before the page was fully loaded.

This happens to me consistently, whether I'm on LTE or WiFi at home. There seems to be some different "front-end" for mobile usage that is being displayed. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing. But it's just not working right, I guess?

I also tried "request desktop version" in Chrome (which still loads the mobile version btw) and tried the button at the very end on each page which says "Full Version".

When using the button on the page, the desktop version actually loads but it's not displayed very nice. Pictures are cropped, etc...

But this is to be expected I guess and thats why the mobile version is there in the first place, I suppose.

Now from my point of view as a user I would love to have

a) the site look the same on mobile and on desktop

or

b) a slimmed down version of the site for mobile usage. I say that because the mobile version kinda looks barebone, but actually loads tons of data and is pretty slow compared to other forum solutions.

I don't want to sound demanding, I'm just reporting what I'm experiencing when I browse this site on my phone.

IMO the best solution to forums on phones is the app Tapatalk which I am using for the XDA developers and a couple of other forums. I tried searching for Simtropolis in there, but it's not listed. I'm not a web developer, but I thinks the api is not implemented here, right?

Maybe that would be an idea?

As an experiment, try switching to Firefox if there is an Android version.

Yep, that's much better. Maybe it really is an issue with Chrome and it will work fine after Google updates it.

Still, it would be great if forum apps like Tapatalk could be used. But that's just a personal preference I guess.

Thanks Noony :)

I don't know if this is a bug, a feature, or I overlooked something, but the search function seems to only search for items from 2005 on.

So, how can I search for items from 2003 and 2004?

So, how can I search for items from 2003 and 2004?

Have you tried the advanced search? This can be found by clicking the gear icon to the right of the search bar.

On this page, the find by date field can be used to search within a specified time period. Click the calendar icon date.png and then select the dropdown menu. To get to 2003, you'll need to first select the lowest available year (for me it's 2009). You may find experimenting with the options will bring different results. For example, I've sometimes found selecting: Match > "Only search in content" can find more matching terms than searching in both the title & content.

Generally, the further back you go, finding accurate search results can be less effective. One of the reasons for this is how web technology changes over the years -- such as from the numerous upgrades. Older data tends to get lost, and there can be issues with how it gets integrated into a new system.

OK, thanks. That's the info I needed.

Only one more -- is there any way to make search use wildcards?

I think you'll have to test this yourself.  Which set of wildcards do you expect?  There are at least two sets.

It doesn't seem like wildcards are currently supported by the search.

You could always use Google to find results from the site, and then use an asterisk for any wildcards:

Example:

site:community.simtropolis.com/files "the ** building"

This would search the STEX for the quoted phrase, and any two words in the middle. For other suggestions, this page lists some more search operators which could be useful.

For some reason I can't access the chat at all. I've reloaded the page multiple times and closed the page and reopened it but nothing. I even updated my Flash Player and it still doesn't seem to want to work.

Try clearing your cache.  What browser are you trying this with?

I just got in from Firefox version 34.0 from my Linux Desktop system.  Perhaps something else, like trying to access from a phone?

By Klono's gadolinium guts, I've had that happen occasionally.  It seems to be something to do with frequency of access.

Nope. Tried to access from a laptop. I got in through Chrome. But not Firefox

Funny that should happen.  Which version of FF?

It's strange chat is accessible for some but not others.

Whatever the cause, from these reports, the common denominator seems to be something with or within Firefox.

Some suggestions:

  • Clear Firefox's cache (Tools > Options > Advanced > Network).
  • Clear Flash Player's local storage cache in: Control Panel > System and Security > Flash Player  [image]
  • Starting Firefox in safe mode, disabling any add-ons.
  • Test by creating and using a new Firefox profile (the old one can still be kept).
  • A complete re-install of Flash Player.

Hm. Not a problem I have, tried it logged in and logged out, and it worked both times.

Next question: What browser are you using?  Is it on a PC or a smart phone?

I'm logged in, using Chrome on a PC.

I noticed that it's happening now only with __B CJ, maybe due to some configurations he did, but it's weird anyway.

Looking at __B's journals...

It seems this entry results in the error:

community.simtropolis.com/journal/5058/entry-25515-hudson/

Although the most recent entry is:

community.simtropolis.com/journal/5058/entry-25516-hudson/

Maybe the first was deleted / hidden from view before the second was posted (as a new entry). :uhm:

Viewing the dropdown list of entries:

CJ_entry_error.png

Which I think explains why there would be an error going forward from #7 and back from #9.

Edit: After performing a test of my own, I've found the error can be caused by setting an entry as a draft. This means it's still visible in the dropdown list, and is linked together through the next / previous buttons. However, draft entries can only be viewed by the author, or a user who has elevated privileges.

The workaround would be to delete the entry, or publish it and edit as necessary.

Hi everyone.

I had problems with my avatar/profile pic.

I already changed my avatar several times into this

G4bX0.jpg

and here's the latest one....

 10924747_821088717956206_495457400006177

But in my computer, it always shows my old profile pic..

1396790812.jpg

Few users can see my new profile pic, (I guess so because they can describe my profile pic in Avatar Caption Game), how this can happen?

How to solve it? Thanks
