Mod edit: Needs updating - Cori

There have been scattered bits and pieces all over the forums on how to post a picture and what sites to use. But I still see some posts and CJ's with people attaching photos. So I am going to put a very simple, step-by-step tutorial on how to post images on the site.

Step 1: Imageshack.us
Imageshack is the most popular, and in my opinion, best way to host images. So first you need to register.

A. Register at www.imageshack.us. It is very simple and easy.
B. Once you do that, go to the home screen.
C. Go to the Media Upload tab.

uploadtutorial1.jpg

D. Select browse and navigate to your saved image.
E. Before you click upload, look at the Image Resizing option.
uploadtutorial2.jpg

F. For this version of Simtropolis (ST8), you can post images over 800x600 pixels, because they are automatically resized. I upload mine at 1024x768 so if someone would like to see the full sized image in a new tab, they can.
G. You can now upload your image. When it is done, it will take you to a page like this.

uploadtutorial3.jpg

H. You need to copy the direct link. Highlight it and press Ctrl and C or just right-click and copy the text. You are now done with Step 1: Imageshack.

Step 2: Posting in the forums
This is the easiest part. You are almost done!

A. Start making a new post.
B. Click the little picture icon. A little box will come up.

uploadtutorial4.jpg

C. Paste your direct link in the box.
D. Click Insert Image.

uploadtutorial5.jpg

E. It now has

and

img

 around the link.
F. You can now post and your pictures will show up!

Extra Info:
-It is best to save images as JPEG (.jpg) images. It loads faster.
-If the image is too large, you may want to provide a link to the image.
-There are some alternatives to imageshack such as, photobucket and imgur.
-If you saved images as a png, you can open it in paint and select save as, and save it as a jpg.

Have fun with images, if you need help just ask! 1.gif

Nice Tutorial for anyone that doesn't know how to post pics.:thumb:

Just a little hint from me is that if you prefer not to registar then use imgur. Imgur is simliar to imageshake expect you don't need to log in or registar.

Thanks for the guide! Yet I tried to see a draft of my first CJ entry - and the picture wasn't resized...

It isn't in the 4:3 ratio - it's a little wider. How can I insert a code to the post in order to resize it? Or it's resized already for the post and on the draft it shows the full size?

edited: Sorry! didn't noticed that that image was 1280*1024 lol...

I resized and it's alright.

Pssst... registering with Imageshack is not necessary. Just go to the page link they give you and right click → copy image location. ;)

Already ahead of you, Duke! Read this. ;)

@Bdub1 - If you could not get the images to load on the forums, you can try the [(img)][/(img)] (minus the brackets) extension.

You need to link to a RAW file online, not a page with it on.

    EG:

You can't link a page like this:

    1o5xdI5.png

You need to link a page like this:

    DAvIi25.png

I've just tried Google drive, and can't find a way to do this; I've never used Flickr. Your best bet it to use imgur.com. It's free and offers unlimited storage space.

    Hope this helps!

If you want to link to an image, the url MUST end in an image extension (eg .png or .jpg etc). Otherwise, as michae95l said, you will just be linking to the page with the image. In drive, in the list view right click on the image and press "Get Link." Open the url it gives you. Right click again on the image and press "Copy image URL" (in Chrome, or something similar in other browsers). You now have the actual image url which you can embed using the image button when editing a post.

The rt click -> "get image url" process works for almost every picture you will find on the internet.

Note: Flickr disables this feature because many of the images there are copyrighted and/or the authors do not want them to be downloaded without their permission. If you are the author of the images, you may be able to get the url, I'm not sure; otherwise it is best to use a different site to upload images.

    Y'all,

So I guess I was AWOL from this website while it underwent not one but TWO site updates! I've been here since 2008 and I know too well how to upload photos using external image hosting websites, but with all these new shiny things that we have, does this method still stand? Is it still the proper one? Is 800x600 still the maximum image size? Pardon me if this has been asked before but I'm still trying to navigate myself around the newly organized forums. Thanks y'all.

Yes, using image hosting sites is still the best way (you can technically upload images directly to ST, but if you do that the image will appear twice in your post, and you can't do anything about it, which isn't very helpful). You just hit the "insert other media" button when you want to make the image hosted on a hosting website appear in your post. Once you click it, click the insert from URL button and then paste the direct link the hosting site provides.

There isn't a maximum image size, though if it's over a certain width (I want to say somewhere close to 1000 pixels), the image will appear shrunk until it's clicked on. Then it can be viewed full-size.

OK. Just checking. There used to be a maximum image size which was 800x600 and the mods would resize your image and send you a warning if you posted a larger one.

Yeah, this isn't working as intended, and is a current known site bug.

A workaround is to remove the attached image (in the editor) so it doesn't show in your post. Just keeping it shown in the "Uploaded Images" box below. Then posting / saving an edit will add it to the bottom of your post.

Currently the maximum width for posted images is 1000px. Images larger than this will be resized in proportion, and can be expanded as MushyMushy explained.

Don't worry, we're not going to punish anyone for posting images larger than this. Those days are over. ;)

umm... Shouldn't it be more of a priority to fix the whole double posting issue? I mean we should be able to post directly to ST without a third party hoster.

The duplication of attached images was due to a site glitch prevalent in around 2016 (as quoted) which has long since been resolved. *;)

The good news is uploading images as attachments is now encouraged and perfectly viable. As per my post here which explains more of the details, each member is currently granted 250 MB of storage space. While using a 3rd party host like Imgur is also acceptable, it's no longer the only way that's practically useful.

    Hi Silur,

Looking at the URL there from the sharing option, I'm wondering whether this is due to a combination of 2 possible things:

    1. The link not having a file extension at the end meaning the post editor doesn't recognise it as an image.
    2. Sharing settings from your OneDrive image not allowing viewing access.

If you could post the link here in reply, I can see whether it's possible to insert the OneDrive image manually using admin HTML Source mode. Should this work and I can fix it up for a post which you'd like this to be submitted in. Otherwise an alternative option would be to attach it directly to ST using your storage quota.

Checking your allocation remaining, the good news is you've only used 4% of your 500 MB for attachments available here.
