About This File

Guild House is a residential building in Philadelphia which is an important and influential work of 20th-century architecture and was the first major work by Robert Venturi. Along with the Vanna Venturi House it is considered to be one of the earliest expressions of Postmodern architecture, and helped establish Venturi as one of the leading architects of the 20th century.

The building, which houses apartments for low-income senior citizens, was commissioned by a local Quaker organization, Friends Rehabilitation Program, Inc. and completed in 1963. Employing a combination of nondescript commercial architecture and ironic historical references, Guild House represented a conscious rejection of Modernist ideals and was widely cited in the subsequent development of the Postmodern movement.

Thank you so very much for making this! It had been on my SC4 wishlist for years as a missing "essential": it is a major landmark of American architectural history, but one which at the same time is unassuming enough to fit into most any real or fictional city. I especially appreciate the handling of the roof; the mix of select 3D modeling with a high-quality texture (presumably taken from real-life) is quite effective here in giving visual interest. And the lotting is simple yet highly realistic. To contradict the late Venturi himself, in this case "Less isn't a bore". If you have the inclination to do any more works by Venturi and his contemporaries, they will find a ready audience. Well done!
