The Zisa is a castle in the western part of Palermo in Sicily, southern Italy. It is included in the UNESCO Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale World Heritage Site. The construction was begun in the 12th century by Arabian craftsmen for king William I of Sicily , and completed by his son William II. The edifice had been conceived as summer residence for the Norman kings, as a part of the large hunting resort known as Genoardo (Arabic: Jannat al-arḍ, literally "Earthly Paradise")[that included also the Cuba Sottana, the Cuba Soprana and the Uscibene palace.
The Zisa is clearly inspired by Moorish architecture. The name Zisa itself derives from the Arab term al-Azīz, meaning "dear" or "splendid". [4]The same word, in Naskh script, is impressed in the entrance, according to the usual habit for the main Islamic edifices of the time.
Il palazzo della Zisa (dall'arabo al-ʿAzīza, ovvero "la splendida") sorgeva fuori le mura della città di Palermo, all'interno del parco reale normanno, il Genoardo (dall'arabo Jannat al-arḍ ovvero "giardino" o "paradiso della terra"), che si estendeva con splendidi padiglioni, rigogliosi giardini e bacini d'acqua da Altofonte fino alle mura del palazzo reale. L'etimologia della Zisa ci viene spiegata da Michele Amari che, nella sua Storia dei musulmani di Sicilia così scriveva:

«Guglielmo … rivaleggiando col padre … si mosse a fabbricare tal palagio che fosse più splendido e sontuoso di que' lasciatigli da Ruggiero. Il nuovo edifizio fu murato in brevissimo tempo con grande spesa e postogli il nome di al-ʿAzîz, che in bocche italiane diventò «la Zisa» e così diciamo fin oggi[3]» |
