About This File

This huge building covers 2 city blocks in the City of Chicago, and has an 8-lane section of the Congress Street Expressway running through it.

Suffice it to say that this is one of the most unique buildings in Chicago.  It was built in the Great Depression of the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), who wanted to give jobs to unemployed Chicagoans.  With many men on the job, they built a huge (3 million sq. ft.) building.

In the 1990s, the US Post Office decided that the old building was not efficient enough to process the volume of mail that comes into Chicago, so they built a new facility 1 block south, and in1996, the doors on this magnificent Art Deco building were closed permanently.  For 10 years, it has remained empty, its huge size actually discouraging possible tenants.

This building could not easily be made into a growable, because of its huge size.  Therefore, I have made it into a ploppable only.

NDEX is at it again! :=) The ground highway is actually pretty acurate here. I love the realism here and I already have a neat place for it in one of my cities. In Chicago, I-290 runs under the building and ends about 1/4 of a mile east of the building. Good--no GREAT job!!!

I gave it two thumbs up earlier, but it is not showing the hands. Any, about my question; are you going to make more buildings similar to it, kind of like looooong warehouse/office structures?

Weee-llllll.... there aren't too many single buildings of this size and height in Chicago, let alone the world. However, I would very much like to BAT some of Chicago's warehouses (which are usually smaller than this, BTW). They keep getting turned into lofts and losing the whole 1920s industrial feel.

Just used this for the first time last night. It is absolutely beautiful. Aside from the quality, I'm very happy to finally have a building that straddles a highway--very common in real life big cities, but not common at all on STEX. Thanks much!

It looks impressively contemporary for being that old, i guess its been renovated some times but still impressive.

Although this truly is a magnificent reproduction of the real thing I could never think this building is practical if you want jobs. the thing is huge and compared to most buildings that covers this much area 1500 jobs is very small. Nevertheless I'll build a city with it because it really is unique.

Ill get this again, now that it has finally been sold off. $500,000 seems like a low price for a structure of this size though. Then again itll be a pian in the ass to renovate. 10/10

Neither rain, hail, snow, sleet, nor gloom of night will keep me from downloading this building. It's great!
