How far should you keep residential from dirty/manufacturing industrial

I have often made use of a small industrial area (say 10x10 surrounded by roads) within a R$ zone to stimulate the growth. Problem is; at some stage they get educated and then the whole industrial area changes to high tech. Which is fine and then I just move onto the next. Planting a few trees around helps with the pollution and as T Wrecks rightly says, mix it up, that is what real cities look like. -

Brilliant. I love the detail that you have within each city. This is truly a work of art. -
I have always found it difficult to start a city like this. I get the feeling that the simulator has not quite worked out the requirement that they should travel across borders to work. You can try connecting them with rail to give a hint. Or what I do is start some residential on the same city as the industrial and then get growth going and then you can demolish the housing you don't want when things are moving along.
