Linux also works fine for SC4 with some mild tinkering if you ever go down that route.

Installing SimCity 4 on Ubuntu
Jamesthe1st replied to adamoteentitans's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
What you wrote is confusing, can you re do it so we can better help you? Are you asking for how to run the game with just WINE? As far as I know WINE is the only way to run a Windows program on a Linux OS. Lutris is just a Launcher wrapper that conveniently also helps handle setting up WINE at the same time and is not strictly necessary, just convenient. GOG doesn't have a launcher supported for Linux like Steam does so we have to install Wine and or Lutris separately to get a GOG game to work. -
The game is still easy to buy and download and the community is still kicking! There have been some great mod breakthroughs with the DLL mods in the past year or so so there isn't a better time to get into this classic game. I've been playing SC4 and been around Simtropolis since it first came out and the DLL mod advances would have completely blown everyone's minds back then.

How to get dgVoodoo 2 working on Linux
Jamesthe1st replied to MegaMiku's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Thank you for this! I will have to try this on my own soon. Do you know if this should help with running the hardware rendering setting? On my Cachyos set up the game doesn't run very well on hardware renderer so I run it on software. -
Great work! Nice to see the eternal commuter bug won't be a problem anymore.

Possible Problems with Windows 11 25H2?
Jamesthe1st replied to Digicoma's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Not that I use Windows anymore as I hate where they are going with 11, but you can also set up Windows to be on its own partition so that if you have a problem and you need to do a restore or reinstall it only messes up that partition and leaves all your games and other data alone.- 10 Replies

Linux: Tried switching from PlayOnLinux to Lutris but now my Regions and Plugins aren't loading
Jamesthe1st replied to Han Solo's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
I am running SC4 through Lutris on CachyOS. I am not sure how to help with this problem but my set up has the Windows documents folder as a link to the /home/Documents folder and it works fine for me. -
Installing SimCity 4 on Ubuntu
Jamesthe1st replied to adamoteentitans's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Well good news is I got it to work just fine now. Turns out not following the Pacmanager directions to move the ini files to the root plugins folder means they won't work! I still have the oddity on CachyOS that it doesn't run properly if I open Steam through the GUI, but it works fine if I run Steam through the terminal. I tried the GOG version on Lutris and that worked perfectly fine as well. -

An update, I ran the game through the terminal on Steam and it works now. However I still don't have use of the DLL mods, any ideas? -
NetworkAddonMod_Setup_Version49.sh
Jamesthe1st replied to watercitymadero's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
I am late to the game but I am running this on Linux myself. You can just run the 4GB patch with Wine just fine as long as you can find your SC4 EXE. For me it wouldn't find it with the hidden folders so I just copied it to desktop first and then back to the Steam folder. -
Installing SimCity 4 on Ubuntu

I myself have switched to Linux recently, right now I am using Arch based CachyOS. So far or running SimCity 4 I have tried to start it through Steam with their latest Proton version and it is just giving a blank screen. I will look through Handyman's guide and see if that helps to get it running. Edit: Now this is strange, on Bazzite I got it to run just fine with no changes, Steam there automatically chooses the experimental version of Proton. -
I like Transport Fever 2, it looks great and it is cool to build big networks. My one critique is that you have to be ok with it basically being a model train sand box, there isn't much challenge in gameplay or the city simulation part.

Looks very nice!

Howdy folks, I just wanted to make a post of thanks and encouragement to this great community. I just recently decided to get back into this game after a 12 year break and it is great to see the improvements that have been made with the DLL mods! I am glad to see this game community is still at it making this game better than ever. There have been some great games like Factorio that I have played in the past several years but no one has made a city builder to surpass SC4. Cheers!
