The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe - separating Southern from Central and Western Europe and stretching nearly 1,000 miles across eight European countries. This region is home to some of the continent's most impressive and beautiful sights, and in the next two updates we'll be exploring this breathtaking region in depth.

The French Alps is where we'll begin our journey - and much of this rugged, mountainous terrain is dotted with quaint villages and farmland.

After traversing the breathtaking French Alps, we move into Switzerland to explore the famed Swiss Alps. Famous for their ski resorts, charming villages, and world quality pistes - they've attracted huge numbers of tourists over the years. The slopes here in Verbier are among the region's finest and make for a perfect ski vacation.

Since the early 1900s, hydroelectricity has become a leading source of energy throughout the Alps as countless large dams and reservoirs have been constructed. Although they're touted for their clean energy, questions have been raised in recent years due to their environmental footprint. The Zervreila Dam is among the region's most impressive.

Nearby is the picturesque village of Hallstatt - this small village makes for the perfect getaway destination on a warm summer day.

For the last sight, we get our first overview of the majestic Alps - the Bernese Highlands in central Switzerland are home to some of the region's most breathtaking peaks sich as the mighty 13,025 ft tall Eiger.

One of your better entries, which is saying something. That picture of Hallstatt was really, really, really good! Same with the first picture.

Whilst you're focused on Europe you may want to look into the Lake District in the north-west of England.

Damn, that dam!

I was just waiting for that overview, though! I fly between Berlin and Barcelona a few times a year to visit family and friends, and the flight path crosses the Alps at some point quite often. The view through the window is just like your last picture on clear day flights in Spring. My happy place is 35,000 ft above the Alps with music from Lorde or Of Monsters and Men in my ears. And you nailed it in this update.

Living myself in Macclesfield I would love to see this. The lakes are beautiful and not too far away from where I live. I hope you keep up the fantastic work you do with this city journal korver and thanks.

I once went to Macclesfield two years ago for a job interview at the college there. Since I live in Darlington I drove down there and it took me more than four hours! I stayed over for the night in the Holiday Inn. It's quite the area Macclesfield and it's amazing how close it is to the Pennines.
