Brazil (Pt. 2/2)
Our visit to Brazil picks back up today - and we'll begin in the heart of the country.
Despite its remote location, the major city of Manaus is one of the country's largest cities and is well known for its historic architecture - much of which was constructed back in 1896 when the surrounding region was flourishing from the rubber trade.
The Pantanal region is an area encompassing much of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, but it also extends into Mato Grosso and portions of Bolivia and Paraguay. It sprawls over an area nearly 100,000 square miles wide - making it the world's largest wetlands. It's not all flat, though - here we see a scene where the Paraguay river runs through some rather mountainous terrain near the border with Bolivia.
A closeup of the Pantanal's pristine swamps - although the wet season is the time of year when most of its wildlife retreats, it's the perfect time to bird watch as nearly 700 of its species begin nesting.
After spending a few days traversing through the dense rain forest, we've arrived on the famous Transpantaneira - a famous road that runs through the vast Panatanal wetland region in south-central Brazil. This road is the only route through the jungle in some places, making it a vital link for moving cattle.
We make our way through even denser forest cover - and things can get especially interesting during the rainy season when the water levels rise. Here we see one final overview of the vast, swampy marshlands that cover the Pantanal and Mato Grosso state during rainy season.
After exploring the vast Pantanal, we head into the legendary city of Rio de Janeiro for the final leg of our journey. The Christ the Redeemer statue at the top of Corcovado Mountain was completed in 1931 and is the city's most iconic landmark - it's also listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Rio de Janeiro is well known for its income inequality - while luxurious apartments line the shoreline, favelas like these hug the mountainsides.
Our tour of Brazil finishes up with one of the country's most breathtaking sights - a view over central Rio de Janeiro and its impressive harbour.
