Entry no.37 - The Suburbs of Baycole

I'm finally back from my "semi hiatus". Haven't been around ST much and its been a over 2 months since the last CJ update, though it feels like it's been much longer. Long story short, too much going on IRL + SC4 burnout. Playing the game and being super active on ST was really cutting into my sleep time. But I think I'll be able to find a better balance going forward now :)

Baycole is a medium sized city located on the north shore of Cisco Bay, it's location in the region is highlighted in red below. This is the first update of a city in the Central Borough of Pretoria.
RTYRk0r.jpg

Baycole is mostly suburban in nature though several major industrial facilities are also located here. To be frank this city is more of a 'filler town', created to make the regional views look better so I didn't spend a lot of time building the city. Originally it was just a small suburban pocket to the east extending from Lindin City and a pocket of heavy industry on the west side with nothing in between.

Initial build form(2010);

Later on I decided to develop the area in between the two areas. But the town is still more or less a suburban filler town so it's not as interesting as other areas of the region.
What is interesting is that I've been using this city as a test bed for custom content. This entry will focus on the suburban modifications, and I think the results will speak for themselves.

Original look of the suburbs of Baycole when first built, little had changed since.

For those who remember my previous suburban work(highlighted in entries 25 & 32) the changes from then might not be obvious. To wit I say it's all about the 'T&T' Textures & Trees.

Lovely work, I love the suburbs with all of the trees. Do you know what your street tree mod it, it looks fantastic! Great to see you back after a well-deserved break. :)

Pictures 11, 14, 15 and 19 were really cool. Also the highway retaining walls looking amazing. Are they are a custom lot of yours?

IMO in front of the highway you should have left grass, shrubs and trees. Otherwise spectacular update!

Masive neighbourhood entry; some elevations of are nice like picture 11 with the road swaping level without conection. Variety, very little left over, well done !

I'm a big fan of pics 23 and 24.  The trees and the rarely seen FAR-2 are quite pleasant indeed.

reposting reply's since it  seems I just missed a couple comments while originally writing them

@michae95l @Jedahdiah Thanks for the comments and the welcome back, it's great to be back :thumb:

@Ln X Yup the highway retaining/embankment wall is custom made. It's one of several different ones I've been working on, some of which use come from texture packs and others from textures found on the net. I may release some or all of them on the exchange after they've been showcased here if people are interested in using them. Some of the diagonals still need a bit more work too.

@art128 Thanks for the regards and appreciate the suggestion. I've finished much of the mmp work in the city but that's one area I haven't touched or figured what to do with yet, prob should have just cropped it out for now.

@kschmidt @raynev1 Awesome to hear, glad you liked it :yes:

@Scribosilyn Thanks! I actually held back on showing most of the mmp work since I didn't want to bog the entry down with too many pictures and because I'm not quite finished with it yet, but I did want to show that it's something I did work on. The security barriers/guard rails can be found below. If it was something else you were looking for just let me know.

@metarvo Thanks for the compliment :)

Welcome back! It's good to see another entry from you! Looking forward to seeing more of the freeway as well as the industrial area. However, I'm not sure if I really like that big huge concrete retaining wall just up the hill from the freeway, as seen on the left side of picture 30 (also present in others). I mean, that seems like a lot of concrete to pour, and it doesn't really seem that realistic. Other than that, things are looking pretty good here.

Wow, that is such a transformation. Not quite sure about the large concrete areas in images 18, 20 and 23 just as examples, it seems at odds with the green suburban environment around them, some mmps would of worked equally well i think.

Yo, guy --

Very nice.  And nice to see a new entry from you.

My favorite is the nature MMP work in #23 & #24.

Really exquisite neighborhood. It looks like a nicer form of my childhood hometown. Or, at least what it would look like if the actual thing wasn't a dilapidated, low wealth, factory city.

Some colorful suburbia you got there! I like your new custom sidewalks and HD terrain transformation... everything just feels so much sharper than before!

(Late in to the fray): Nice Suburbanism !  The variety of houses is truly a pleasure to see. I like the joining of street ends with pedwalks ! And the scree of picture 21 & 23 is very well done. Bravo :thumb:

@Compdude787 Thanks for the comment and input. I originally envisioned it as interlocking blocks of concrete placed on top of a smoothed out earthen embankment, kind of like a one sided rock dam;

But now that you mention it, it does look a lot like it might be filled entirely with concrete instead. Good thing is made another custom set of embankment walls that will probably convey the idea I had for that particular wall better. I'll show it in the next update.

@tankmank Really appreciate the feedback. It's great to hear all these opinions on what works and doesn't work in certain situations. Especially in cases like these where I might have gotten caught up in moment of wanting to show off a new mods/lots in action.

@Dreadnought Glad to hear you liked those, I included snippets of the mmp work as a preview for a future entry(#39) that will focus on the natural side of the city.

@gviper Awesome to hear that :D

@TheLynx99 Thanks and lol! :lol:

@kingofsimcity Thanks man. I had a hard time settling on textures for a side walk mod so I ended up making several different versions. But I think this one might work best as it looks like a nicer version of the frequently seen in-game maxis plaza textures. And the HD terrain mods are something else aren't they, should have made use of them sooner.

@tariely TY! And I'd say your only fashionably late, which is more than acceptable :yes:

Wow, all those trees look gorgeous! Which street tree mod are you using? I've never seen one with seasonal trees before.

@sunda Didn't know that, that's cool too :thumb:

@Tino06 Thanks for the comment. The tree cover is compose of 3 different types of mods - 1)mmp plopables 2)lot trees 3)street trees. 1- I have about 30 different types of mmp plopable trees. Most of these are made by Girafe, Sim fox and Jeronij, you should be able to find them by searching for their files on the ST exchange and the LEX. 2- the trees on the residential lots are listed as dependencies for those lots, links for them come along with mattb's & simcoug's house most of which are from the LEX and can be found through the search function. Lastly 3- the on street/road tree mod is a custom mod that I made. What it does is changes the trees that appear along streets and roads. I used the "Maxis Tree Replacement Mod 1" by marsh as the basis for it and replaced the data in the file with trees for the above listed creators and others.

@icantthinkofaname Thanks! Glad you liked it. The house you are looking for is call the "Belize" it's made by mattb. It doesn't seem to be available on the ST exchange which means I must of gotten it from the LEX exchange at SC4 devotion. Unfortunately I can't give you a direct link at the moment because the damn site is not letting me log in using my password. I requested a new password twice yet I still haven't gotten an email from them. Anyhow if you are a member of the site and can actually log on you should be able to find it(and plenty of other great houses made by him) by searching through his content on there.

@takemethere I'm already using seasonal mmp trees as well as PaulSawyer's Maxis Seasonal - Residential & Commercial Lots but my streets and roads need more color.

That's awesome. Would you consider uploading this mod you created for us ordinary non-modders? :D If you don't want to release it on the STEX, even an upload on some random file hosting site would be much appreciated! :)

Unfortunately unlike the other BAT's and mod's that I've made, I didn't make that particular mod with a eye to uploaded it onto the exchange. For one it's not upload friendly, that is the the file that I create can't do anything itself without all the dependencies, it needs all the tree models created by other users to work. Thing is I didn't keep track of which file or prop pack the trees actually came from, I actually didn't need too thanks to the PIN-X program. I simply temporarily dumped all of my prop packs and mmp mods in my base pluggins folder, opened up the PIN-X which allows you to scan through all the models of those props in every one of those files very quickly with a picture for visual reference(the maxis lot editor can't do that) and from there I picked out which trees to use(about two dozen) by creating a new prop(desc file) of each tree. Its a fairly easy process, I wouldn't have made the mod otherwise. It would take a lot of time and work to back track and figure out exactly which prop packs those trees came from since there is no information in the mod itself or those desc files about that. Sorry, but right now it's just not something I have the time for. Currently I'm actively working on many other other mods over the last several months which I am planning to show soon - BAT & lots which don't rely on dependencies to work right and are therefore much easier to release. Perhaps once all that is done I can look for dependencies for the tree mod.
