Voltaire:  Your 50th post.  And finally!!! Diagonal runways!  Plus, I never knew about the blast pads and the ALS.

By the way, the centered taxiway thing is about the shoulder marks, fyi.

Hey Voltaire, it's me again, well I'm almost completing my airport, but I noted one thing right after I used your mod my demand for R$$$, CS$$$ and CO$$$ went totally down, so anyone else had a decrease on the demand after using the mod, thanks for the help.

- the SSALS placement is correct. I made the lights overhang the Lot specifically to accomodate blast pads.

His SSALS placement looks like it's backwards.

Good work on the buildings and such. I'm looking forward to seeing the next installment of your airport mods.

I've made substantial progress on Volume 2 this week. The exemplar modifications and icons aren't done yet, but they should be soon. I'll try and post pics this weekend.

Thanks for the kind comments kaji, subedei, weird, spokaneflyboy. I too would like to see more small aircraft props. It seems like super-large jet projects show up in the forums from time to time, but they never get finished. I'd love to see BATers become interested in smaller and easier-to-make planes.

The SSALS in fabiocb's pic is facing the right way - its lights are visible from the approach side. It is the correct distance from the threshold, too -- the shortest light tree is 4 tiles (~200 ft.) from the threshold bar.

Unfortunately I can't offer a solution to your problem fabiocb, because I have not experienced it myself. I actually removed all NIMBY effects from RMIP-2 Lots, so I don't see how they could cause demand drops. Did you pause the game while plopping many things at once? What else have you built in the city? What Modds do you use (not Lots or BATs, but actual Modds)? What do the desirability, crime, and pollution data views show?

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Edit 5/23: I got all the modding and icons done, but there's some more changes to the Lots I want to make. Release should be possible within the month. Here are some preliminary screenshots:

    newapron8le.th.jpg   newramp7vk.th.jpg

The main idea of Volume 2 will be to make ramps and aprons less monotonous, by providing two new pavement types and many new markings. The parking spaces, T-hangars, and passenger gates will  generate money for the airport. In the real world, parking is never free -- hangars and tiedowns are rented, and airlines lease gates. I am going to include some more stuff not shown here, but most of the Lots with aircraft are in the pics.

Because I cannot expect ramps to have even-numbered lengths, I will create some 1-tile bits of taxiway. I cannot do the same for runways though, because each centerline dash takes up 2 tiles.

i really like the way the aprons are looking it definetly breaks up the monotomy that can happen (even with the greatest airport pacs ) ^_^

Volume 2 is now on the STEX! Here is a big screenshot of what's inside (caution: 430KB):

    volume24on.th.jpg

I took time to clutter up the terminal gates with service trucks, personnel, and assorted props. Most of the lots are 1x1 for maximum flexibility in layout; I had to give up some of the more complex textures for the sake of modular-ness but I think it worked out nicely.

Thanks kaji and bmag_20, I hope you like the latest finished product.

Next project is around the corner... I'm going to attempt some menu modding using BSC Menu Management. At this point, with over 200 Lots released in all versions of RMIP my airport menu is getting out of hand, and I suspect everyone could use a break from scrolling. I know many of you want the new(er) concrete runways to be next up -- be assured that I have it on the to-do list, and it will get done eventually, after some other things are out of the way.

your airport packs are simply amazing...I've not built a finished airport yet...just tooled around with them, but the quality is awsome! I just wish we had some better terminals. Keep up the good work.

I love your packs! I've only used a few items (only because my comp works slower as I go along). Maybe I'll build the airport, then the city around it...

I just finished reading through the whole thread and downloading everything.

Excellent work Voltaire! I am completely impressed and baffled by your work. It's incredible beyond belief.

I just have one request/question: will you be making in the future terminal gates for the larger planes that Maxis has? (the 707, i think?).

Again, excellent work and I eagerly anticipate all future projects from you.

It could be interesting to see other aircraft models as well. Project AI, or AI Aardvark might let you use work their models into your stuff as long as you gave credit. I've been tinkering with airport designs and have loved the pieces so far. I'm kinda looking forward to highspeed-turnoff/diagonal taxiways to give it less of a GA airport feel. Are they in the works? The compass and VOT point markings are a nice touch.

well done voltaire this is amazing!

what we really need now are some wider runway sections and/or your great BAT skills being used to make some huge terminals, which we are lacking in at the moment

thanks, and keep up the great work

yes i agree, i just downloaded your new airport set and the runways and taxi ways are brilliant, the only thing that is slightly out of plaace now are the terminals. but still brilliant work wish i had the patience to put something like this together.

The hard part with terminals is that most of us like them to be customizable, which means they need to be somewhat plain so all the peices can fit together and look like they should be together. In real life, Airports are always grandios works of art, designed to be unique.

    Great!

Perfect for my Nicholson Airport (Suburban Stradmont).

And textures are good too (My Avro plane prop will work good on this!).

And for those of you who want it, I'll try BATting a new style of terminal of concourse, a very modern style (This might be one of my hardest project yet!) somewaht similar to those at Narita.

Voltaire, your work has totally revolutionized my airports. They are realistic, unique and very fun to build. Your newest additions really makes the gates less one dimensional and adds much realism. I was wondering if you could make diagonal taxiways for you latest set, because most airports have this and there is strong demand. I am hoping you have time to do this.

Hey, cool - volume 2 was on the front page two days in a row! Perhaps he/she/they who select the Spotlight item is/are airport nuts too? 19.gif

Thanks yoder7652, KyNYC, bmag_20, Weird, and jackel.22. For those with little playing time on their hands, remember that building small can be realistic too. Most metro areas in North America have a dozen landing strips, but only one major commercial airport. I have two public and three private airfields within 15 minutes of my house, and most people have no idea they exist.

The diagonal taxiways are the second-next project MishaTennis. I have some artwork started for them, but that's all so far. I am trying to come up with an elegant way to make them modular without compromising the accuracy of markings and lighting.

WeirdOne, SpokaneFlyBoy, freedo50: Most of the items you mentioned have been on my list for some time, I plan to put them in the first or second volume of the large airport edition.

I've seen many requests and ideas posted lately, so I thought I'd better write a bit about where this project is headed. These items will occupy me for six months or more (no kidding):

    - BSC Menu Management lots, for current and previous versions of RMIP  done!

    - Small Airport Edition Volume 3: Diagonal Taxiways done!

    - Large Airport Edition Volume 1: Runways & Taxiways

    - Additional volumes of the Large Airport Edition

I am also involved in three projects headed by other members, as a technical advisor and/or texture-maker. Those will occasionally take time away from RMIP development. Also, I am not planning to model new terminals or aircraft, because 1) I can't BAT very well yet, and 2) it would duplicate the excellent efforts of other members which are already underway.

hey its me again voltaire 3.gif

i have just been playing around with the RMIP to make a huge airport and i have come acroos a few problems where you seem to have forgotten a few different transitions/intersections, so i took screenies:

[EDIT: i dont mean to be demanding btw, dont worry if you dont have the time or inclination to fix these minor problems]

    corner.jpg

any chance we could have a corner taxiway piece with ramp inside and outside (an on both sides if possible 3.gif)

    taxiwayend.jpg

would it be possible to get a piece to finish normal taxiways?

    walkways.jpg

could we get some pieces to allow us to change the direction of the passenger walkways (the hashed white area)

    tjoin.jpg

would it be possible to make t-intersections with ramp along one or both edges?

and finally a piccie to show you how cool my airport looks thanks to you!

Hmm... I noticed that you forgot to make a few things:

    - Gates for large jet planes (jetway, passenger walkway)

    - Gates for small jet planes (passenger walkway)

    - Gates for small prop planes (jetway)

    - Cargo gates (places where cargo planes can stop to drop off shipments with the aid of personell and vechicles)

    - Sharp turn for taxiway areas where current turn lot is too large

    - Rapid runoff escape taxiways (large runways, small runways)

    - Large runways

    - Middle-of-runway marking (used in Japan, although I live in Canada)

A few other requests were taken up by the person who posted the message before me.

I wouldn't quite say that it's fair to say he forgot them. He's currently working on a lot of improvements and is releasing them in batches for those of us, like me, that are too impatient to wait for the full collection.

I've never seen a middle of runway marking, as we don't have them in the States. It's sort of useless information to a pilot anyway.

The high speed exit taxiways have already been mentioned and will be in a pack he's working on that will also include the larger runways.

In the folder that you installed RIMP2, there are several jpgs that show the standard layout of all 3 types of runways. Most airports that are serviced by airlines will have atleast one precission instrument runway and the rest will be visual or non-precision. If the airport is known for bad weather (like Seattle or San Fransico, which see fog on a regular basis) they will have multiple precision instrument runways. Spokane International, the airport I fly out of, has CAT-III ILS on Runway 03 and CAT-II on the other end (21) while Runways 7 and 25 have basic (visual) markings.

I have not missed or forgotten anything, though several omissions have been made on purpose. Mainly in order to shorten menu length. If the MMLs work well, I'll reconsider releasing an expanded Ramp-making set later.

At present though, the ramp pavement style is not intended to replace all asphalt around terminals. It's only designed to be directly behind each gate, under the staging area, and within rows of parked planes.

Please remember this is still the SMALL airport edition folks -- small (untowered & municipal) airports don't have jetways leading to every plane, nor do they have complex taxiway systems. They certainly don't serve heavy jetliners. Using this edition to make big airports is like banging a square peg down a round hole - you can force it if you want, but it won't be an easy fit.

To avoid certain layout issues in the future, I would like to suggest placing a row of grass, a row of asphalt, and a row of staging area at the end of each concourse. That leaves room for upcoming RMIP features yet to be announced, and avoids the need for (as yet) non-existent intersection pieces.

    cncstub4ii.jpg

Doing variations on this layered style can add some complexity to the overall look of the terminal, especially at zoom 1 & 2. And remember, SMALL airports don't pave over everything in sight -- pavement costs money, but turf is cheap!

Thanks SpokaneFlyBoy, you're right on... I've been splitting the Lots up into volumes to reduce time between releases. If I decided to keep everything to myself until the whole Edition was finished, I would never hear the end of it!

Just thought I would post some images of my latest airport project using the RMIP lots!

I prefer the smaller municipal/regional airport look as opposed to the larger international airports.

Greater Gibson Airport - formerly a millitary base, the old hangars have been torn down and replaced by an expanded passenger terminal. The airport now has one runway in use. The smaller vfr runway was under utilized so it was closed.

    gibsonairport11zv.jpg

The Gibson airport is the busiest in the region and offers quick connections to larger, international hubs.

    gibsonairport28sw.jpg

Here are some of the main flights arriving in the evening. From left to right:

flight 792 - direct from LGA, flight 831 - from BOS connecting through BGR, flight 886 - getting set to depart to YYZ, and finally flight 879 - direct from YHZ

    gibsonairport48uk.jpg

And thanks again Voltaire, your work is incredible!

    Great work!!!!!!!!

I'll be able to do more realistic airports now and I have planned to create an airport using RMP-2 airport lots and ace aiport lots (when it will be on the stex ;-) ).But I' ll have to ceate a new terminal :-( If It's possible, I post a map of my airport) bye
