For any type of custom content, it's best to have a separate download folder structure to keep the originals and then for installation they will go into a Plugins folder which is in the SimCity 4 folder located in your Documents folder. (If that doesn't make sense, we can point you to some threads which go into more detail.)

After the initial installation of the game, the Plugin folder there will be empty. Also, I've corrected a tiny typo in my post above to say the Plugin folder is in the SimCity 4 folder. (I left off the 4.)

Hello. I am not new but have not properly introduced myself. I have been playing Simcity4 since 2000. It is the ultimate city building game in my opinion. I am an aviation enthusiast. I play on a machine that I had built for SC4. It is not connected to the internet. I have met several people through this game and they have proven to be very knowledgable and helpful. At present, I am building Metropolitan France and her overseas departments. I have used considerable "poetic license". It's always a thrill to see what is new. I would be NOWHERE without the modders and contributors  whose lots and mods MAKE this game what it is.

If so, I sincerely look forward your advice about my Louvre Statues, since I never been there before, I will publish them with two versions, one is Statue&base (Without ground)&light, another one is just the Statues themself, You could here:

I completely agree, and SC4 simply wouldn't have such a sustained interest without the community here and at SC4Devotion also. Although the vanilla game was solid in itself, it's how custom content and knowledge has been shared and built upon over the past 17 years and counting.

Sounds cool what you're creating there with a French themed region. Also although I've not got into using them myself, I've seen plenty of airport themed items.

Hello friends!

I used to play SimCity 4 as a kid back during the early aughts and have revived interest after receiving a free, digital copy from EA. Because of current events in the past couple weeks, I've been lurking on Simtropolis learning about all of the nuances of SC4 mods and tools. I've honestly never fully understood SC4 modding at the level I do modding in more contemporary game titles. So far, however, I've successfully added HD terrain and trees (some pretty minor, cosmetic changes compared to some stuff on this site) all the while attempting to relearn all of the most basic, vanilla game mechanics.

Anyway, there's a long way for me to go in both learning and creating, but I'm still glad to see such a vibrant community continuing to pour their love and support in keeping a pillar of the city-building genre alive and well! I'm excited to finally join your ranks and I hope to contribute in some positive way to the community and to the game in the future.

Nice introduction, and it's great you've decided to get back into SC4 again. You'll soon find the community has continued to grow and is still active both here at at SC4Devotion as well. The potential to create is only limited by our imagination, and it certainly is a nice distraction away from the growing problems of the real world.

Something to mention about the EA (Origin) edition of the game is to check the version provided. Recently there was @Haljackey in this topic who received the game fully patched after redeeming his original game code. There are concerns with Origin though as they've been known to sell the game unpatched, and worse still it's completely unpatchable because of the DRM method makes the manual patches from the disc-based version unusable (as this blog explains).

So I suggest checking to make sure your game reports the same 1.1.641.0 version number as Haljackey found there. If that's the case, you'll be good to go with the Origin version and compatibility with custom content. Otherwise the recommended choice is to purchase the game from GOG.com (who happen to be selling SC4 on discount until the end of March). The advantage of the GOG edition is the game comes fully DRM free, and can run standalone if skipping to install their Galaxy client.

I've been playing city building games since I was a kid, I always wanted to be a skyscraper engineer but I switched interests over the years, now I am hoping to be an aeronautics engineer and future private pilot.

My favorite SimCity game is 3000, I still play it to this very day, I also have SC4 on steam. I do play Cities Skylines from one time to another.

If you do still play SC3000, you might like our SimCity 3000 Forums. Understandably, it's a much slower paced area, but it's possibly the largest dedicated section for that game on the entire internet.

Also, some time ago I gathered every custom building that could be found via the Wayback Machine which had been on the old EA Exchange. There's a wee bit over ten thousand buildings in a huge zip file. The linky to download that is in this post should you want a copy.
