Changes are coming to Free Flickr accounts

From January 8, 2019, online photo sharing service Flickr has announced all new and existing free accounts will be capped to 1,000 images.

Additionally...

From February 5, 2019, free accounts still containing more than 1,000 images will have their oldest images deleted to comply with said new limit.

Free members with more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download content over the limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted -- starting from oldest to newest date uploaded -- to meet the new limit.

 

In a blog post, the change is hailed as a "step forward" after the company was acquired by new owner SmugMug, who took over from Yahoo in April. For those who wish to remove the limit and store more than 1,000 images in their Flickr account, it will soon require a Pro account as offered as a $49.99 annual subscription.

The motivation is a targeted refocus as a photography-based community, and being "more closely aligned to Flickr's past" where the old Free limit was 200 images.

Also given "more than 97% of Free members have fewer than 1,000", the change is believed to be a "fair and generous place to draw the line".

With an overview, a press release goes on to explain:

Flickr has long offered a free plan to photographers, and we remain committed to a vibrant free offering. Free accounts will now be for a member's 1,000 best photos or videos, regardless of size.

This means, we are no longer offering a free terabyte of storage. Unfortunately, "free" services are seldom actually free for users. Users pay with their data or with their time. We would rather the arrangement be transparent.

 

So in what may likely impact some users here at Simtropolis, especially those who post inside the Showcase and City Journal sections, this is a word of forewarning for everyone to backup their Flickr hosted images. Should you have more than 1,000 uploaded, be prepared to relocate them to another online image host, and/or make use of the 200 MB local storage provided to ST members (which can be managed from your personal Attachments index).

As of yet there is seemingly no news of hotlinking being blocked, as was the case with Photobucket last year. However, should you actively use Flickr for posting images on the site, this is certainly something to keep in mind before the deletion deadline of February 5th, 2019.

This topic can be used to constructively discuss the news, and offer suggestions for alternative image sharing services.

Given the direct relevancy to members of ST, this has been posted in a private forum not viewable by guests.

Also to attract the attention of those who this news may specifically concern, I've run database queries to find those who've posted Flickr images on the forums, CJs, and inside STEX file descriptions. Each of you have received a notification informing of this post.

Thankfully I only used it a handful of times. Imgur has been my go-to for a long time. Generally an excellent hosting site for most purposes.

I recommend people consider compressing photos to optimise them, in which case that 200MB limit will go a long way. Done right, it doesn't have to impact visual quality in a huge way either. For example, Photoshop contains a special "Save for Web" option in the File menu (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S), which will optimise files for online storage with minimal loss of detail.

I just read about it this morning. I created a 'dump' album for everyone who wants to download my pics because I am not paying $. I have over 10,000 images on there.

The vast majority of my photos are from SC4.

Thanks for the heads-up. I got that message, but I'm not aware of having used Flickr. I assume that it must have been some rare link that triggered the response. I usually use Imgur. Let's hope Imgur doesn't jump on the bandwagon.

I participate saving your photos. Here are your albums in my laptop:

Haven't done albums.

I would like to tag the done, on going, and haven't done albums using colors but my file manager doesn't support it. So, I separated them with folders. For those who want to backup their CJs to me, then I give you the chance by PM.

I also want to share my complaints. Why zipping the images took so much time? I do use adblocker and stable internet connection. And even without adblock, it still doesn't work. Fun fact, updating Minecraft is faster than waiting for the zip.

I've got a PRO account but haven't been able to login into it since my internet provider XTRA split with YAHOO on the plus side I am now getting emails from Smugmug about my account so maybe one day I might get my access back again ... I can still access the pictures and have been downloading anything I don't want to lose .... the vast bulk of the pictures are from my time on the RTMT team and I'm assuming will still be visible (or not) on the RTMT Private boards .... if things ever improve in real life I'll take a look back thru my old posts and see if any of them are missing their pictures.

EDIT: As its been awhile since I last tried logging in and have just had another go at it and it worked, and it looks like SmugMug has changed my account  to a Flickr Free account which is a bit annoying but I'm just under a thousand images so should be ok

FLicker as a image host provider hasn´t inspired me a moment ! Lol resolution,  image 0conversion except if you want to pay fo it. Long as I am looking for hosting with my own site or release my picture via a pdf sollution. Imgur for now does a great jpb but commercial advertisement as well with Photo bucket is staring around the corner. ST moderators do a great job bringing over the mesagee to Imgur, to stop blocking, wich I am very greatfull Thank you !

Imgur did once. They used to have a limit of 250 uploaded images for free accounts. Looks like they either received enough backlash or resources because that limit appears to be gone now.

I will break for a while from my activity. There are 14 done albums now. Don't worry about your images because I've a backup on my flash drive. I have a news for you: after I finishing some albums, I will be made my backups public. I'm intentionally made my backup private because I don't want some people to make a chaos. Stay tuned!

After a month break from my voluntary duty, I have back up 25 photos.

The problem I'm experienced is some albums like Oak Ridges are very large in size. For part one alone, the size is 4 gigs, takes 3 hours to download with my internet. What do you think about this issue? Sorry for my breaks. Thanks.

I'm so sorry, I'm officially out from the project due to my internet speed. My internet speed is slow to download all albums in short time, possibly distracting others. I don't know some albums are very large. So, I hope you download the uncompleted ones: Halton, Halton Hills, and Oak Ridges, especially ones with fast internet. Don't forget to download other members' albums as well. I want to upload the albums but I don't have places to do it. Is Simtropolis' Gallery is the answer?
