Ah I see, I wasn't aware of this "Attachments Quota" limit, but yepp it makes sense. Now I see, that I have this option to check, but totally missed this option in my profile so far. Thanks for the reminder. I think I'm gonna be doing a nice a house cleaning.

And thanks for increasing the limit.

Hi!

I've noticed a couple of times when using the @-tag  I seem to be stuck inside the tag, and can't continue to write my post. Only option i've found is to update the page and use the "clear editor" function that comes up.

Using Firefox 61.0.2

Maybe try using the Esc key. When the mentions dialog appears from typing the @ symbol (as it did just now), I've found this dismisses the box.

    Hope this does the trick.

That's happened to me too. I notice it when I backspace into the tag.

As long as the tag isn't the first thing typed you can click outside of it somewhere previous. Then I hold shift and right arrow over a space I've already typed, ctrl+c to copy, end key to get back to the end of the tag, and ctrl+v to paste. Now I can continue to type. However once this has happened highlighting and trying to delete the tag won't work, but place the cursor in front of it, hit the enter key to move it to a new line and then shift+end to highlight it and it can be deleted.

Thanks for the tips @CorinaMarie and @Cyclone Boom I will try these further on and report back if I run into anymore problems

Don't mention it to CB, but the Esc key from within an already blue tag doesn't help. *;)

Oops, my bad. I misunderstood the issue to be when just typing the @ like so:

I see to be having problems receiving notifications of topic updates/replies. I have double checked all my account and email settings and I have it set so that I should receive an email as soon as a reply has been posted, but I haven't received any emails for a couple of topics I am subscribed too. I have made sure my email is correct as well. Is anyone else having this problem?

I've looked into this and requested the assistance of @CloneBoom in replying to the "No sound effects" topic you posted earlier (and followed). I was then able to confirm an on-site notification was successfully sent and received under your account.

    As follows:

    Test Notification - Member 174923.png

(The reply has since been deleted so the above notification will no longer be listed.)

For email notifications, these are configured via separate toggles on your personal Notification Settings page. This includes options to be notified for various types of site activity. In the "General" section is what covers posted content including here in the forums.

    Here are the relevant ones:

    Notification Options - General Email.png

(Note: I've condensed the above image to fit better by removing empty column space, and added on the headings for both which actually show at the very top in the "Clubs" section.)

While composing my post here, I see you've since discovered these not-so-obvious settings, so it looks like you'll be good to go. *;)

With email notifications, these will be sent from an address which I'll disclose in my next sentence (semi-cryptically to prevent web data crawlers from copying the address). Here goes: It begins with "server", followed by an @ and ends with the domain name of this website (the dot com part). So it might be worth whitelisting this to ensure it doesn't automatically get filtered and placed in your Spam folder. We've received some reports of this happening with confirmation messages for the STEX Collections.

I hope this works for you.

Adding to the techy details CB mentioned, I'll ask if this occurred mostly late Saturday night into early Sunday thru Sunday afternoon? That's when the weekly backup runs and the site gets rather unresponsive. It could also be that it delays sending of notifications. If you had all the settings correct, did you get the notifications much later or not at all? (If all the settings weren't set then the question only applies to after having set them.)

Thank you both for your replies. It seems like the only way it is sending me a reply to a topic I follow is if someone has quoted me. Any other forum I have been on, if I follow a topic or reply to a topic & follow it then when someone replies to it, I will get an email, but it seems here I only get the email if someone quote's me. And ya, I found those options late yesterday as I didn't scroll down far enough apparently the first time.

johnvosh, (I'm deliberately not using the @ mention option nor quoting you)

I see you are listed as a follower of this thread. As a new test, did you get a beep (notification) that I just now replied here?

I got a notification under the bell icon at the top, but no email.

Because I don't have the site open all the time or if I am at work it would be nice if there was an option to have an email sent as well, just so that I know someone has replied. Is this option not available? Thank you for your help

I've peeked at your account settings and it looks like you've enabled all the proper things. @Cyclone Boom is our techy admin who knows way more about the inner workings of the site so we'll have to wait for his answer this evening.

    @johnvosh

So after looking into this some more, I believe I've tracked down the cause of the problem. First of all I temporarily assigned your account to a local email address admins have access to here at ST. Then after a test post I was able to confirm no email notification was received with the current settings. Next from inheriting your account's permissions and checking that Notification Settings page again, I found a setting which isn't shown in our admin toolbox.

    As follows:

    Notification Preferences - One Email.png

I unchecked this and saved. Then after another test post, about a minute later I received this email:

    Test Email Notification.png

And I made sure it did the same with a 3rd reply too, before setting your email back.

What I wonder is how it classes when one "revisits" the site. It sounds like the option is designed to consolidate all newly posted content from received notifications into an individual summary email. So maybe there needs to be a certain time interval or number of notifications before the system proceeds to send another. Or it may even be a bug if you were getting instant emails when someone quoted you, but not for replies on their own.

Hopefully with it now toggled off, the following post does the trick...

As many of you have prolly noticed we've been having trouble keeping Simtropolis online for the past couple of days. The most detailed information about what @Cyclone Boom and I are doing is in this Announcement and we will continue to update that as we try other options. As mentioned there we've taken the STEX and the Gallery offline in an effort to reduce server load and this will hopefully keep the site from disappearing every couple hours. Should this prove to help we will then bring the STEX back to members only as our next attempt to balance usefulness with uncrashness.

So far early performance observations suggest the site is running notably quicker now since we've taken the STEX and Gallery temporarily offline.

Both the responsiveness of pages and the general load times seem much improved. Based on this as @CorinaMarie explained, I can confirm later today we'll be bringing the STEX online to registered members only. This means only those like yourself with an account will be granted access to the STEX. However, any visitors will provisionally be required to register an account themselves, and then remain signed in to view and download files as normal. However should this prove a detriment to acceptable performance, I'm afraid we'll likely be reverting to this current state with both the STEX and Gallery completely unavailable, pending a resolution (and restoration).

Our reasoning behind this is to ensure Simtropolis can function to the greatest extent possible at this moment in time. Then once the issues are identified and fully resolved, we'll bring the STEX and Gallery back fully online in due course. After looking into the database and performing an optimized rebuild, I can confirm everything appears to be structurally sound in that regard. The same applies to files stored on server which remain untouched, and so it'll be a case of tracking down and ironing out the deeper issues.

As ever with such prolonged technical issues, thanks everyone for your patience and understanding.

I have replied to a Status Update on my profile in which I have given permission for peeps to temporarily share STEX files via an off site method such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.com. Once the site issues are fully resolved we would then hide (or edit out the linkys) in those posts. I'll be at work today so any questions for me will have to wait until this evening for replies.

Edit: I've created the Temporary User to User File Transfers thread in SC4 GD for this.

I saw a post from earlier regarding saving the text before posting a new topic, but is it safe to post one now? I sure don't want to be the cause of another crash!

I'm leaning towards from all indications it will be much safer to post without this risk now.

However given shortly we shall be reopening the STEX to members, it could be how the added load on the server causes similar performance degradation as over the past few days. Hopefully this won't happen, but potentially this may require the site to be taken offline in order for it to recover. Therefore just in case before submitting, I suggest making a copy of your post (or any site content) is still highly recommended until further notice.

Yep. It's safe to post even if/when the site is acting buggy. The point was if you've typed up a long post and the site goes offline before you click the submit button the post could get lost. So, the idea is to highlight all the text you've typed and copy it to a text editor on your comp so you'd have a copy in case said post gets lost. That way you'd have it for the next time we revive the site and could try again.

In a few minutes we'll prolly be bringing the STEX back for members only as the next test. This may or may not trigger the hidden bug so we'll just have to try and see.

    Update:

As planned, the STEX has now been reopened for registered members only. Consider this a trial run to see how it impacts site performance. The Gallery is still offline for everyone, but in due course this will likewise return and just currently won't be accessible.

We'll continue to monitor server load and post updates should this situation change.

    Thanks all.
