I've always been more attuned to straights lines and angles rather than curves and circles... However, I feel myself becoming more 'attached' to these round images, and it seems that most of the avatars look better in the round. Of course my own is probably a very clear exception ;). Oh well, maybe I'm due for a change after so many years...

The trouble with both is not all images are well suited to both. Any avatars chosen for one will look weird to anyone doing the other.

That said I'm still pulling for square, since it allows the whole avatar to be visible. Circles are better suited to pictures of people's faces.

I don't think round avatars will be weird in square, after all in the old forum some members had circle avatars.

Why not simply remove the ugly grey frame borders on the avatars? Let the default crop be that of a rounded rectangle/square or polygon as shown here.

Whatever shape your avatar is will not matter as it will simply 'gel' with the background without those grey borders. If yours happens to be round already then you will not run into any problems here.
You could even have a triangular avatar if you wish:

Personally I prefer square avatars but if they would be round I wouldn't mind either. The option to choose by yourself with the theme-option in the bottom of the page is a nice solution I think. ;)

Nope! Aside from the fact that as a community we must arrive at one decision on this critical issue, having to manage a duplicate theme just for square/round avatars is a drag for me.

    Poll closes Sunday 11:59pm EST!

Well, if the circles have it, make it bigger.  The radius should be at least 25 px. and preferable 30.  I see you still need some RAID for your sig.

I think a round avatar is more in line with the new design, and feels more "fresh".

I do agree with Nonny that if circles are chosen the radius should be slightly larger. To me it looks like there's enough space for it since there's currently quite a bit of unused space in the little light gray bar on each side of the avatars. I'm not saying make them huge or anything, but they could be a hair bigger.

I voted round...but do like the 'choose your style' option.

I vote round, since it has a more 'modern' look and feel to it, and I feel like this forum could do with some modernizing. Not to mention, my picture looks fantastic in the round :P

Looking at the poll at this time, the round heads have it.  We cavaliers will just have to lump it, I guess.  I'll probably shrink my avatar to fit.

Circles in my opinion defiantly fits better then the squares but I think you should just keep it how it is with having both themes available. I also see no reason as to why you wouldn't want to keep it as it is. Having both available keeps everyone happy!

I believe that it might be best to allow the user to choose whether their avatar is round or square. Would this be possible?

I personally think either shape is good though.

I agree we must arrive at one decision, but why could that one decision be to not change at all?  And personally I do not see how this is a "critical issue" stated by Dirk, nor do I see a reason as to why someone would want to change.

The amount of votes in this poll can hardly be a quorum.

There must be a host deadline or something. 3 days on Comic-Con weekend can hardly be an ideal time to post such an "all-important" poll.

It is all very enormously critical. And I trust we all understand this is all critically tongue-in-cheek.   :ducky:

I don't expect a quorum, annnnnnnnd... in truth, Simtropolis isn't a true democracy... :) Still I did promise to put it up to a vote so anyone who cares enough either way can toss in their vote ... because, again, as well all know how absolutely essentially critical this topic is.

But I'm happy to extend the poll for the rest of the week... though I still suspect the Rounders will win :D

Let it never be suggested that I thought Simtropolis was a democracy...I am well aware of the Dirktatorship that runs everything behind the scenes.

And of course, part of my issue is that I'm for squares, which appear to be losing, but the other part is that I despise social media, and round avatars screams some twisted form of Facebook/G+/Twitter at me.

Well, that and if the Circles have it I need to find a new avatar. :uhm:

Actually the matter is so stultifyingly easy that the entire discussion baffles me. :???:

Let's say we have an avatar space of 80×80 pixels. Let's say it's a square. And now?

If you want a square avatar: You pick a square picture up to a size of 80×80, and there you go.
If you want a round avatar: You crop a circular section of an image up to a diameter of 80 pixels, and there you go.

A round avatar space only accommodates rounded avatars, square avatars would have to be considerably smaller.

Hence, the advantage is clearly on the side of the square avatar space.

What's important is that there is no border around the avatar so that rectangular/square and round or differently shaped images all look good. I vote square.

The Roundheads only lasted as long a Cromwell was alive.  I am for a more enlightened Dirktatorship with geometry for all.  The burdens of monarchy are many and often onerous, but noblesse oblige.

And the point of trying to look like a social medium site makes me more than slightly ill.  Twitter is for twits.
