The circular avatars slots will definitely require some people to rethink what image they use since some pictures just were meant to be square. I get the sense this aspect of the UI design takes a nod from social media and is assuming people will use pictures of their actual faces (Sorry folks, I'm not an iron with glowing eyes in real life. :P). That has never been the norm on forums traditionally but the trend is certainly heading away from maintaining anonymity online so...

    Astute observation.

So.. should we take a poll? Let the community vote on Circle or Square avatars?

To be a bit fair, maybe we should give it a week or two with these circle avatars just to give us time for it to sink in before we put it up to a vote...

Here's what it could look like:

If there's an option in the software for making the avatars square I'm all for flipping the little switch over to make it so. Just seems simpler than making lots of people come up with new pictures to use in order to avoid, if you'll pardon the metaphor, trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

    (snip)

Waiting for a little bit before deciding on circular/square avatars seems like a good idea.

In my personal opinion though, having square avatars is better because that way people can have square or circular avatars if they want. If the system uses square avatars one could theoretically take a screenshot of a ST page, use the eyedropper tool to copy the color of the bar where the avatars appear and fill the area around their avatar to make it appear circular. Can't do it the other way around, of course.

    Just my two cents.

    @Sabretooth78

Looks like signatures have now been enabled. They can be accessed from this page in your account settings.
It seems HTML is also supported in the 'Source' view. ;)

P.S. By the way, did you receive a notification for this post? I believe posting @Username now notifies that user (and can be toggled in the notification settings).

    Yes it did.

Regarding circle vs. square; I'd prefer square but I respect the idea to wait and let it sink in a bit.  I'm sure there's plenty other dust that needs to settle before details like that need to be ironed out.

Edit:  FYI, that link just takes me to an empty "Overview" tab, without even the google/facebook enablers, etc.

It looks nice and all, but it's still laggy as hell.  I hope this clears up after the final touches are done.  The lag had been bad for a long time now.

A future poll sounds like a fair way to go about it. :)

It's good there's at least an option to customise them, and the update hasn't modified the images themselves.

Personally, I'd support keeping the avatar area square. The one issue with the circular template is it 'eats' into a few (mine included :P). Of course, this affects some more than others, but I agree, it does limit the types of images which can be used. For example, if you find / create an avatar you like, it'd require editing to make sure it mainly fits inside the circle.

    EDIT:

That's strange, can anyone else confirm whether they can access the signature editor?

I've noticed that line breaks and youtube links in posts are not generating.

    Example

    9dMhSn1.png

Some of the old BBCODE is still being re-parsed in the background.  This is part of those 'background processes' that are still running. It's gotta comb through all posts (forums, cjs, elsehwere) and re-parse the bbcode, so until it does that, they will appear un-rendered...

You're not going crazy. However, I've disabled the signature editor for all groups temporarily -- don't worry your old sigs are still there, but they'll be available again a little bit later.

Played around with the gallery a bit. I don't think I can rename images if I upload more than one at once. Once they are uploaded, I don't see an option to change the name of a image.

I find it funny how some people's avatars work almost perfectly in the new circle (me, sabrettoth78, tekindusT), whilst others are practically ruined (anyone with a Benedict Trixie table)...

Needless to say, I'm in the former camp of loving the avatar view :P

Indeed. Seems that mine is working quite well in a circle too.

I think we're still in that phase where... and let's see if I can...

Regarding square vs circle: I say give the option of both and let people decide from there, if that can be arranged. Otherwise, I'll need the scissors again.

Though here's my curiosity right now: how does one pull off certain profile customisations, if that's available right now?

Whew, my avatar face fit, though we are now seeing less of me and my hair.  Noooo, not the hair!

    Gintama_72-45.png

Gasp!  I can easily paste images again!!!

It seems those of us for still using, for whatever reasons, certain updated versions of IE that deliberately restricted unsecured clipboard access by script, such as unmodified forum scripts used by IP Board, can once again cut, copy, paste, quote, and function-insert into the immediate reply boxes.  Hooray!  I was getting tired of having to hand type everything in BBCode mode.

Omigosh...to be able to cut-'n'-paste directly again...

    ...cut-paste...cut-paste...cut-paste...image link cut-'n'-paste...

Thank you very much for your hard work, Dirk. The new layout is ultramodern and I can't wait to play with it when it will be fully ready :D

Remember that the update is not 100% done yet, so don't worry about the errors. Give it a try later.

Looking good, no problem logging in with fb, atleast. I don't mind the circular avatars at all.

Thanks for looking out for my Trixie element avatars - I don't think all that many are being actively used - maybe 10?

I do like the clean look of the upgrade, however I would be in favor of switching back to square avatars.  If Dirk does run a poll in a few weeks and the circles win, then I'll have to think about what to do to make my avatar look better than its current odd state.

Minor issue given all the essential upgrades/fixes going on is that the main banner looks very blurry to me - I don't know if this is a resizing issue, or if that is just the way it came out. Is it bothering anyone else?

Oh, and the ability to drag files to a reply is very welcome!

You can always use as an avatar the bubbles you designed on that "Trixie winners galaxy" one or two years ago (can't remember exactly when).

I like the circles, it fits better with the new design IMO.

Just a small pedantic bug, I have noticed that there's no space between the location title and the given location. Example, under my avatar it says "LocationMelbourne, Australia"
