Here's a sneak peak at my latest project; the scrapyard! I have a few more props to make before its done though.

That looks stunning! Is it something you're going to upload to the Workshop, or just a prop fidgeting exercise in your city?

As soon as all the assets are done I'll upload them to the workshop. It might be a few more day though. I'll keep you posted!

Awesome! I love assets like this: suitable as fillers as well as 'stand-alone'.

City looks very nice. I like the grid style and the sprawl.

A lot has happened in my city the last week. I've noticed that I had a very high demand. Mostly residential, but also commercial. I've tried to satisfy this demand by building new neighborhoods. These neighborhoods mostly have a suburban character but the city center itself also expanded a lot. For comparison I've got two area-shots. One from two weeks ago and one from this week:

qtYs7qs.jpg

AQlOoYv.jpg

Like you can see above the city expanded a lot. I used to hold back for expansion a little bit because there are a lot of obstacles that make this more expensive. This city is divided over a lot of islands, which it needed to build bridges/tunnels for traffic. Therefore I wanted to make sure that I have enough demand to build a new neighborhood fast and keeping costs low. At a certain moment my financial resources were that big that I could easily build up almost the entire map. Which resulted in the city you can see above.

XNB7bmL.jpg

The first neighborhood I've finished is in the picture you can see above. This is a typical suburban neighborhood; low-rise buildings, mostly residential and good educational facilities. There are some commercial buildings in order to keep travel-distances to a minimum. However, most commercial buildings/leisure and facilities are in the city center. The neighborhood is also connected by metro and bus. Therefore traveling to the city shouldn't be a problem.

After this zone I've finished some more, such as the island you can see in the picture above (left-upper corner). Demand was still high, thus I've started with a new neighborhood which was mixed leisure/residential. You can see the picture below.

Zvfmxsu.jpg

This neighborhood was kind of a challenge because it was between rail-lines, the highway and an industrial zone. I've tried to separate the houses from that by building walls. However, the atmosphere is weigh different than other neighborhoods. In order to keep it connected I've built several tunnels. The part of the neighborhood on the left was finished quite lately, right after another project. This project was weigh different, I'll show you this in the two pictures below:

qEXZTCZ.jpg

IA7Sx4C.jpg

This project is only highrise. Even though this is the smallest neighborhood on the map it has the highest number of citizens. However, it also had quite some problems. I had to connect it with two tunnels and two metro-lines in order to keep commute-times decent. There are no commercial buildings in this area which makes it very important to connect it to other parts of the city. Furthermore it is kind of difficult to keep services on a high standard. This neighborhood requires more expensive service-buildings (such as for instance the police, station, fire department, schools, healthcare). This makes it less favorable than standard low-rise neighborhoods. Furthermore it surprisingly didn't have a big effect on the residential demand. These are all cons that made me reconsider my strategy. Nonetheless, it looks kind of cool, so I'm keeping this part like how it is right now.

This brings us to the situation right now. I've been working on a new suburb, next to my first one.

s1cgeUG.jpgI still have quite some room in the bottom-side of the map for this neighborhood. This zone is also connected by metro and by bus and the highway connection should be sufficient. After this neighborhood is finished it's going to be more difficult though. The most desirable places are already taken and a good connection with my city center is quite important. Thus I also need to invest in metro and other forms of transportation. There still is a lot of room on the other side of the highway be other than that everything is taken. Next to that I still have to think of traffic-problems. Distances are getting larger and even though my metro system takes care of a lot of commutes (at the moment it is profitable) there are still a lot of people choosing their car as means of transportation. Next to that I also have to think about transport-vans and trucks. So next to the demand and expansion of the city there are still a lot of practical problems that come with that growth. These problems need to be addressed and that will be my next challenge.

Thanks!

I'm in the process of trying different colors for the cars. They look ok with the LUT I'm using but not so great without it.

I will soon release the following scrapyard assets:
• Car crusher (prop)
• Car (sedan) in five versions with four color variations (prop)
• Scrapyard sign (building asset with lighting that can be placed anywhere)
• Scrapyard sign (prop)

I'm putting the scrapyard on hold once these assets have been uploaded but will continue working on this project in the future.

This is my to-do-list:
• Car (combi)
• Car (pickup)
• Tow truck (vehicle)
• Tow truck (prop)
• Barrels, single and stacked (prop)
• Tires, single and stacked (prop)
• Pile of crap metal (prop)
• Scrap metal (decal prop)
• Garbage (decal prop)
• Container with open doors (prop)

Might I suggest one more item for your to-do list?

An old metal rack for tires and wheels. You often see them in old auto scrap yards, sometimes inside the yard office, sometimes sitting against the wall outside. Often with more tires just loosely stacked beside it. You could also make a stack of wheels to go with your stacks of tires. When they strip cars, the wheels are often good resale items.

I'm working on a few construction site props. Concrete culvert pipes, plastic pipes (stacked) and metal I-beams are in game.

I'm also done modeling:
• Singel large I-beam
• Stacked small I-beam
• Single small I-beam

Concrete culverts! This is one of the things I've been hoping someone would do. They look great. I'd love to see a longer one, like two or three times the length of the ones shown. I've wanted to have some just sitting out in a field somewhere like you see sometimes. Though it occurs to me that if I wanted a longer one I could just put more than one together and call it good, rather than you having to make another thing.

There's also something I've seen in LA and San Diego, but I don't know what they are. They're just big chunks of concrete sitting out for seemingly no reason. I'm not sure what they are. To see what I'm talking about, see the scene in Falling Down where Michael Douglas is confronted by the Mexican gang members. The thing he's sitting on eating his lunch. If you have any desire, I'd do backflips if you made those, double backflips if they were covered in graffiti. Triple back flips if they had stretches of rebar randomly sticking out here and there.

@Matthias King I might do a longer concrete culverts eventually. It's not a top priority though. I'll have a look at those Falling down things! :)

Sounds good!

As I was typing longer culverts, it took me a few minutes for it to occur to me that it's not really necessary with everything Prop Anarchy can do, so I went back and edited the post. So no worries about the longer culverts. The short sections can become longer sections very easily.

The Falling Down scene is on YouTube. Not only is it a great scene from an amazing movie, but you can clearly see the concrete things. I'd love to know what they actually are.
