Entry 31: Ullswater

 

I took a small break from playing Cities Skylines, plus with completing a week-long school placement in that time period, I decided to hang fire. Yesterday I got right back in there and I found CS to be just as addictive as ever. I spent that time building the foundations of a future city- Ullswater.

Here is the progress I made both yesterday and today.

 

 

 

This is roughly the town centre.

 

 

 

All the RCI buildings you see have been strictly selected thanks to the controlbuildinglevelup mod.

 

 

 

I also decided to go for a more griddy SC4 approach when designing Ullswater, with plenty of focus on fillers, flora and spacing.

 

 

 

 

The Paradiso map has some amazing views!

I love the ruggedness of those mountains! (Though I might remove the long highway bridges.) What map are you using? Looks like a fantastic start for a realistic but attractive city.

The map you're playing on seems familiar! However I changed most of the highways and rails in the map editor, because the original creator did a fairly poor job on those. Just see how the highways go around the mountain in picture 5, I think it looks ridiculous and ruins an otherwise nice view. Other than that I like the update, a believable town center you created.

Great to see you building again Looks fantastic so far.

I wonder if you guys turn on the 'unlock all' mod when starting new. I've been considering this myself just because I don't want to wait to get to those really needed upgrades (electricity, highways, roads etc).

zakerunner: I am using the Paradiso map. As for those highways, well I got rid of those in the city but I can't do anything about the ones beyond the borders.

 

max_13: I suppose it is too late to use the map editor to alter those highways in a saved game?

Carnivorous: I always use the unlock all mod and unlimited money. I don't want anything getting in the way of the available city building tools in the UI.

Entry 32: WIP upon Ullswater

 

It's been a little while but I made quite a bit of progress with Ullswater. A recent trip to London has inspired me as I noticed the labyrinth of streets which is London, the assortment of roads and one-way roads, and the new tower blocks emerging from the older pre-modern buildings.

The city so far. I'm not afraid to bend that grid! I almost implemented the first part of the railway system which will run straight through Ullswater.

 

 

 

I recently found some ploppable walls on Steam.

 

 

 

I have been using them to mark the borders of parks.

 

 

 

Close up it is some fine texture work and the wall height is just right.

 

 

 

Another thing I have been exploring is leaving gaps in some parts of the suburban areas.

I downloaded some more unique buildings plus quite a few new high-rise commercial skyscrapers.

 

 

 

All in all I would say the result is pretty decent. There's one special skyscraper which I am dying to show to you, but that is for a later entry.

The update I have in mind won't be posted today. I can't load up the game without it always crashing, and it did not even get to the main menu. It seems the trouble is with certain mods which change gameplay, but I don't know which are the bad ones. This could take a day, a few days, a week or even longer until I sort this out. By sort out I mean wait for a official patch and/or wait for the modders to update the mods which change game mechanics. There are some mods which I simply cannot remove without vastly altering Ullswater.

 

Furthermore I don't know if the game has updated yet. I keep loading the game on Steam and yet it won't update. Anyway to sum up.

Well, Paradox wrote this comment under the patch notes found on their Facebook page. Maybe this could help?

 

I had a similar problem first, but after removing these mods it works just fine However, as you already said, you will probably have to wait for mod updates until you can load your cities properly again...

Thanks for the comments. I have good news, bad news and ugly news. First the good:

 

1. I got the game working again with all the mods.

2. The tunnels are amazing.

3. Ullswater is in one piece.

 

The bad:

 

1. I had too many assets so I trimmed about 1GB of assets

2. Assets which are not updated with each patch somehow impose a limit to the maximum asset folder size. My limit seems to be 3.5GB at the moment.

 

The ugly:

1. I spent time filling in a few gaps where there were missing services, RCI buildings, parks and unique buildings.

2. Couldn't find the European buildings civics.

 

Tomorrow I will be posting an entry since tonight I will be skateboarding.

The funny quirks continue... So I there I was taking pictures with F12 but that little picture pop-up was not there, so I started wondering. Was I actually taking any pictures at all? So I tried shift + F12 and there was this mild camera flash every time I took a picture. Or at least I thought I was taking a picture. So I exited the game pretty pleased with the pictures taken only to find... there were no pictures. f......... !!!!!

 

You mf... piece of s... Is this a glitch or some new quirk of the latest patch? In any case I will have to post the next entry tomorrow, but that's if I can actually take the bleedin pictures.

You can try using Fraps or Bandicam am for taking pictures. I always use Bandicam. No glitches at all.

Just take pictures with print scr and save them with paint?
