When you need an exit from a major artery, but you don't have room. I give you the King's Avenue exit. A rather creative solution to my problem :P

Trying to create a traditional symmetric roundabout, but need to overcome the game limitations. Came up with this strange looking experimental thing. Going to urbanize it a bit, and it should look better soon

City limits sometimes force you to get creative, so that's how the SlimFasttm Interchange came to life:

Amazing interchanges! SAVAGEePHOENIX that 2nd picture of yours is incredible! It is definitely a HoF contender.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

I've posted this interchange before, but I'll reveal the latest update in reconstructing the Interstate 5 and 90 interchange in my Seattle recreation.  After this, I'll be working on dealing with the whole convention center mess.

I had NO idea that you could make double deck highways and with funtional exit and entrance ramps,  I wonder if The James Lick Skyway and the Bayshore Freeway (US101 and INT 280 in San Francisco could be recreated!!!!!

Most of these interchanges suffer from unrealistic merging ramps.  I hope that this can rectified in coming patches.

I've been testing double deck highways ever since no pillars came out.  It is simple to make one, but the hard part is to make it look good.  Having the terrain editor is necessary since changing terrain influences how the upper deck flushes with the lower deck.  The only thing I lack is asetheic things like pillars to make it all realistic.  Of course the merging issue is a problem, but if you look at this interchange on Google Maps, it is a complete merging mess to begin with.

The latest test was on making retaining walls which took several hours to make it as decent as it looks in the screenshot.  This will be useful for later when dealing with shaping Interstate 5 through Downtown Seattle.  Most of the focus has been on making Interstate 90 (viaduct freeway) look as close to the real thing as possible.  I've been tinkering around with Interstate 5 now that I think that is the best I can do with I-90.  Although, knowing there is a two-lane flyover ramp from SB I-5 to EB I-90, I'll need to change that.  Both flyovers ramps have been a challenge to properly build in an uneven terrain area as you can see in the photo above.  My Seattle to-do list is:

  • Redesign Interstate 5 south of the convention center in a bridge format and cover it up with terrain manipulation.
  • Design convention center and I-5 Express Lanes
  • Touch up I-5 and State Route 520 interchange along with work on double deck Ship Canal Bridge.
  • Design and contruct State Route 99 in tunnel format... or double deck format.
  • Build Seattle Transit Tunnel
  • Construct West Seattle Freeway

EDIT: Now that I think about manipulating terrain to make those retaining walls and level 1 viaduct pillars, I'm pretty sure I can manipulate the viaduct deck over Interstate 90 in a challenging way to fake a two-level pillar system.  Though I won't publish my results if it doesn't work.

Where I live in Toronto, we have this interchange connecting the Don Valley Parkway (a standard highway) to Ontario Highway 401 (local-express highway). I decided to recreate this interchange without all the jumbled up priorities. It's not perfect, but I'm extremely satisfied with the result:

I have yet to use this in an actual C:S city. :D

I built this abomination of aesthetics while playing around trying to plan a great city. Don't know if this can work probably at all, but so far it seems to function.

One highway of the roundabout-kind of 4 way intersection thing leads to the second roundaboutisch-distributor, which then has some branches leading into the urban areas.

2015-09-20_00001.jpg

The intersection itself

2015-09-20_00002.jpg

The "distributor". I don't think all this will work when the city grows, but that's the most fun part of the game: optimizing the cr*p you built when you didn't knew better.

The flexibility of using heights in Skylines is something I really like. However, sometimes I make it a bit difficult for myself. An example is this interchange. It could've been so much easier.. This is more fun though.

6IjizGM.jpg

Another example is this interchange:

drQOMrj.jpg

This interchange looks quite simple. However, I have an extensive metro-system which makes it a bit more challenging:

ay85FHg.jpg

Furthermore there is the fact that this subway-system is widely used and too busy. I want to improve this by building different tunnels for every line. This makes it a lot more challenging in the future. Luckily I've built the highway at the deepest level, this way I still have 2 levels for my subway at most places. I didn't think about this with building the first underground highway. That highway is at 4m deep, most challenging about this is that there were a lot of new developments around this area since I've built this highway:

xsONyTD.jpg

The train station is new. A lot of tracks leading to this train station are underground. Furthermore the highway is underground and the subway-station is quite important for my metro-system.

1vH4KQi.jpg

As you can see the current situation is very chaotic. There is also a lot of congestion in this area. The situation got out of hand when the city expanded, new subway-lines were established and they had to have a connection with the central station. At a certain moment it looked like this. Next to that the highway is congested. An easy way to solve this is widening the highway to 6-lane. However, this could still result in congestion at the intersection. This is quite difficult to solve because of the lack of room. I also have to find out why there is congestion in that particular place. This way I might be able to spread out the traffic over different roads. This would take a lot of effort though..

Woof. What a cluster****!

This seems to be a trend I've noticed however....underground networks are generally a huge mess. I believe the general consensus is (myself included in this) that because it's "invisible" 95% of the time, who cares what it looks like. I really wish I could find a screenshot of a really well thought out, logical underground network.

Haha. That's true. I notice this when I'm developing new areas. When I started with my first highway tunnel (the one in the last picture) it seemed very unlikely that the city would develop in such a fast phase. The bus-station and the central metro station in the old city center weren't sufficient as well. That's why I've placed all my stations at the same place. So this area is typically a place where a lot of transportation-types are centered. This makes it a really big mess with subway-tunnels and tunnels for busses and trains. Next to that there is the highway that isn't deep enough.

I have no room to improve my tunnels anymore so a big project is needed. This project will take a lot of effort and money but as you can see it will be necessary. This new plan would include the placement of the bus-terminal which is included in the After Dark expansion-pack, demolition of all the existing tunnels and building new tunnels at different depths so they don't collide with each other. The highway will be at the deepest level and will be 6 lanes wide. I'm thinking about making it a bit like an interchange and separating the traffic so that I won't have to worry about problems at intersections. However, this will be very extensive, expensive and complicated, especially considering the subway tunnels and the train tunnels. If I'm going to do that I have to make the existing above-ground interchange into an underground interchange as well. The whole plan will take a lot of effort and I think I have to demolish quite some buildings because of new tunnel entrances. Even though it takes a lot of work and money I'm looking forward to this new project.

I'll post some pictures when the project is done!

Perhaps I should've waited until daytime before taking the screenshot. T-Interchange with on/offramps serving the Downtown and the Financial District area of a new city. The bridge on the left is six lane, dropping to three when it hits the motorway and the offramps. Didn't think I was gonna manage to fit that roundabout in there but I did, with some messing about. I know that it's normally dangerous to have traffic joining from two directions at high speed but we can just pretend everyone here are fantastic drivers who can deal with that.
