I haven't bothered with a full region view as only this area has even been rendered yet.

I just started (two weeks ago) a new region (my 58th) on a downloaded map that I have heavily modified (more than 5 hrs of terraforming) to fit to my likings. This time (for a first) I will mostly plop my lots, and in a way that they should look "natural". It should be a big city that slowly spreds into the valleys, with very little farmlands in the area. (maybe in the northwest only).

The suburban area should take most of the North-South valley and the surroundings of the Bay while downtown strictly stays at the river junctions. The airport will is planned to be situated on the bigger island and the harbour somewhere on the east side of the bay. It should look realistic.

.....just having fun with ploppables, I guess. Not like my other bigger regional cities of 5 to 20 Million sims, this region should not have a lot of actual simcitizens once finished.

I started with the city center somewhat working myself outwards spredding into the region. No RHW this time, only Maxis' Highways, but I kept the NAM. ;)

A sample of details.....

....and here is a more detailed map, much bigger. (Warning:slow load for slower connections).........

lol, so you noticed....well. I am too lazy to re-install the game and put them on the right side. Besides, I don't know quite how to do this. They used to be on the right side before, something happened I guess. ;). Let's just say that I got a bunch of British Sims in my city.

Argh, level crossings on a highway! :P The transitions of the RHW-6 on the right look a bit odd, I think you can fix that easily :)

oh i'm sorry, i forgot to mention that the north south road isn't actually highway. its an HIGH-CAP avenue that serves the industrial area

To remove the need to transition from RHW-6 to RHW-4, I would recommend using a Type D ramp (one where the entire lane branches off) for the exit just west of the transition.

I'm making a functional airport/spaceport for SimMars. Here is a little overview. The ground around the actual airport looks like that only because I have the terraformer. Maybe I should add a few more terminal buildings and hangars? And should I replace the dirt area in left side with pavement? Please tell me what you think. I made it perfectly functional and you can see the planes landing from time to time. There are some plane mods that replace planes with spaceships. Since they are suitable for Mars I'm considering getting them.

Also when I zoom in a portion of ground has the green texture. o.O

Your airport looks great. It's a stage 1? If yes, don't worry about the dirt textures. Replace them with pavement in stage 2 and further. You can also use some ramp props to make underground hangars. We are on Mars after all, so the colonists should spend as less time as possible in the outside.

Don't worry, is from the terraforming progress

O.K., seriously, it's a bug of the Lot Editor. Open the lot with the L.E. and just click on the tiles with the grass. For some reason, the L.E. thinks that there are 2 textures in the same tile. By just clicking them, you remove one of the two textures. Then save the lot.

Currently working on my first modular airport ever.
Now it is intended as small international airport with just one runway and minor terminal.

I would appreciate any criticism and help.

I know runways are intended to be long, but that just looks a little too long to me.

Nice work otherwise, the taxiways look neat.

Thank you!

But I don't think it is too long. Runways are aprox. 2-5 km long, and this one is 3 kilometres long maximum.

Just been touching up the main town in my current region. One aspect was the addition of a football ground and training complex (league 2 or non-league size) just south of one of the highway interchanges.

Any comments, criticisms etc. I'd love to hear :)

Not so much criticism as critique.  ;)   FYI: the northern BSC Parks walkway roundabout is facing the wrong way. The entrance to the roundabout is facing the farm field instead of the actual park walkway.

I'm also curious about your parking lots. The vertical one running parallel to the football field, is that a modular set or 2x7 lot?  And the parking lot (assume Park&Ride) set behind the Subway, it looks like a similar modular parking lot set that I have, but it doesn't have the dark base texture like yours, and I don't think it has the bushes in the medians. Are those also an available set, or is that you're own edit?

Wow, very eagle-eyed JBE  ;)

The parking lots I use are these:  I presume are otherwise exactly the same as the ones you've got. I think the bushes and shrubbery were from one of the addon packs for the kit (2 I think).

At the moment, none of the stuff I use was made by me as I lack any knowledge of modding other than how to install other people's hahaha :thumb:

Also, the grey parking lots near to the stadium are part of the stadium lot :)

Devils in the details.

That's what happens when you do game testing for a while. Your eye learns to catch things slightly out of place. It can be a cures rather a blessing most instances.

The worst is, I catch it everywhere else but not in my own works. There seems to always be just that little something I've overlooked.

Funny thing is, usually my first thought in other mayor's images, "where does everyone park??". You certainly don't have that issue, and one of the reasons why I like your pic.

You were close. I did have the Modular Grey set installed, and the Black set bookmarked in my "Wanted" folder. Rather surprised I didn't install both at the same time.

It's rare for me to come across a set of parking lots I don't have already. Spent many of hours scouring for every parking lot I can find. The only ones left really, are those that come packed with other content that's not parking specific, and no where in the details does it mention there's a parking lot lot included.

If you have any parking lots that you feel might be obscure, please feel free to post a name or link, or just send a PM.

Same here.

Opened the LE once to mess around but found the curve to be more than I felt like dealing with at that time. I do enjoy the little SC4 playing time I get in between having to learn this an that or downloading/installing everything (and making sure it works).........     LE will be for a later rainy day.

When I do, I'll most likely be putting together filler type lots. Can't get enough fillers. Not one to have every building directly on top of each other.

I've been messing around in GIMP trying to work on a political map for the region I'm about to start working on.

How does this look?  (Yes, I know I'm borrowing the name of my region...)

Uldah_satellite.png

This is the satellite view, by the way.  And yea, I decided to connect the little lake to the ocean, so the political map isn't quite accurate right now.

Don't use GIMP. InkScape would be a much better option. It's vector based, so smoother curves.

Also it's very basic. If you are doing a topographical map, some more information is needed on things like heights, etc. If it's polictical, show administrations and cities, roads and rail possibly too.

It's political.  I was mostly just messing around in GIMP, and as you can see from the satellite picture I added, I haven't even started working on the region yet, so I haven't finalized my decision on where the provincial borders, cities, road, rail, etc. would all go, but I do definitely intend to add these in the future.  I will check out Inkscape though some day when I have some time.

Since I hadn't yet decided on city locations, provincial borders, etc., but wanted to practice a political map, what I was going for with the above map is something like what you'd see on a very basic map like this:

europe_map_political.gif

Just a very basic "This is X country and this is X country's borders."

No, you're right.  It's not particularly spectacular yet.  I haven't started developing this region yet.  The thread is called "show us what you're working on", and that is essentially a "Before" picture that doesn't have an accompanying "After" picture yet.

I'm planning on doing a CJ once I get things going a bit.  But I'm trying to decide from an role-playing-perspective on what would be more interesting.  I haven't decided whether the island to the Northeast should be its own sovereign state or not.  If I were to make that second biggest island its own nation, then the third biggest island in the central north might be divided between Ul'dah (the nation on the biggest island) and whatever I come up with as a name for the other nation.  The north-central island has a sort of natural dividing line as it's split between two large city tiles.

And anyway, the map will eventually have provincial borders, cities, and a road/rail network map added to it.  I just haven't developed those things yet.  Mainly, my goal was to get the map ready to start doing those sort of things after I got the region going.

I've started working on the first city in the region, Bayport.  This city is on the south central tile.  I roaded & zoned the peninsula.  I forgot to leave room for bus and subway, and I haven't serviced this area with civics yet.  I'll go back and put those in later.  Was just trying to get a feel for how I wanted the area to look.

Bayport_Dec_14_021378697964.png

This is the start of the peninsula area.  This little strip is like a boardwalk I guess.  That strip will remain low-density commercial, but I may rework it in the future.  Can't decide if I want to download an entire ploppable boardwalk, or just leave it to grow whatever low-density commercial grows (though I'd like it to remain CS$$$).

Bayport_Dec_14_021378697817.png

Here's a decent shot of the marina.  Also shows off the broad 4-tile avenue sort of deal I made with OWR and plazas/gardens in the middle.  That ped-mall goes from one side of the peninsula to the other (crosses from bay-side to ocean-side).

Bayport_Dec_14_021378697862.png

Here's a better shot of the ped-mall and the central make-shift decorated avenue that runs down the length of the peninsula.  I've also got OWR running perpendicular.  I'm a fan of OWR.

Bayport_Dec_14_021378697887.png

Grid-busting a little.  Also making use of NWM.  I don't like the way the beach looks in the water... is there a way to fix that?  Also, I must admit, I got the idea for this OWR-Avenue connection as such from watching Haljackey's City from Scratch series.  He used this idea and some variations on this a few times, and I really liked them all.

Bayport_Dec_14_021378697925.png

Parking!  Tons of parking.  These are the high-density blocks I zoned in.  This is the ocean-side of the peninsula.  The beach in the ocean looks better in this pic... so I don't know what the deal is... and I'm contemplating whether I want sea-walls on this side or not.  I won't be putting marinas over here.  All boats will dock in the calmer waters in the bay.
