As a Mac user, I've played SimCity since the original-- released on Amiga/Mac first ;) .

It's been disappointing that I've not been able to do any modding since SC2K and SCURK because there haven't really been any tools for it on the Mac-- i.e, no BAT no lot editor for SC4.

Having to jump through hoops to dissect .exe files for plugins, etc has been a minor pain, and Mac users had to jump through hoops with some of the EA SimCity web site stuff too. So do you think we will still be second-class SimCitizens?

Presumably, with the announcement of a PC/Mac release, Aspyr is no longer in the picture for SimCity (thankfully?), so ideally, we won't be dealing with an inferior port of the game. Just speculation, here.

I understand that not much is known yet about the state of modding for the new version... I'm just kinda curious (and hopeful) about not being left out this time.

I feel your pain.

.exe files aren't a simcity problem though, its the creators who insist that .exe is the best way to go. In some cases it may be, but it makes it so much harder for mac users to open and use them.

Yeah, I've always liked aspyr, but the problem I have with them is they usually stop supporting the game after the release it, which isn't good. They have put out two patches, but they don't fix as many bugs as the PC patches do.

I hope that SC13 will be released on both mac and pc, as maxis has done this for their most recent games, but Im not getting my hopes up.

Although a part of me sees modding being available only on a pc. Still, fingers crossed.

Mac has grown in market share a fair bit since SC4, so I'd say there's a pretty good chance there'll be a native Mac version of the new SC.

If I ever got a Mac though, I'd definitely want to run all my Windows-only programs without any mucking around. Why not dual-boot?

Yeah, I am really hopping that Sim City will be for mac, and all the functions/extras that come with it like modding will also be for mac.

EA/Maxis have reiterated many times that they are developing the Mac version along side the PC version.  Although, the Mac version likely won't have Origin, but may have Steam support instead (nothing is confirmed).  They are using the term "PC" to mean computers in total, not just those running Windows.

This is good news. Can you post a link to the source? Not that I don't believe you or anything like that, but I'd love to find out where you read this so I could read up on it too.

Thanks!

Newly posted job ad: Maxis Emeryville is looking for a Mac Graphics Software Engineer. They didn't mention for what game this is exactly for. Aside from it's for a "Mac version of a AAA PC title":

Nothing officially announced yet if there will be a Mac version for the new SimCity... But this could be a hint.

I'm not sure if it's confirmed, but there's a conversation on Twitter that kind of shocked me.

They've always said that they are only focusing on PC at the moment. I expect that it will be available on mac like SC4.

But from the photo, it seems that they are only creating a PC version. They didn't mention that a Mac version would be released.

Well, Maxis never told us exactly whether a Mac version was going to be released. But if this is ture, Maxis is making a huge mistake.

If you look at the picture it says:

"Came on apples first"

That’s hilarious!! It was developed on a Commodore 64, they aren't around anymore...

And that is why I buy windows with a price range around $100 - $900 instead of $1,500 - $2,600 Apple computers.

Plus, Windows has every single program you can think of for its platform!! I think half the revenue that Apple makes is from their iPhones, iPods, and especially their iPads.

But don’t worry, I think they will make it for Macs… They still have a year to go. It only took Minecraft 2 years to become available for XBOX 360.

Also, I heard it costs money to make games for different platforms, so maybe they haven’t made it for Macs because there isn’t a big enough audience for it?

I always saw Apple as the underdog, but since Itunes has been manipulating my PC for the last year because I haven't been updating their tracking devices and 3 of my Ipod's broke for no reason.... I cannot think less of Apple.

Honestly, it would be nice to have a Mac Version. But what I am planning is to install Windows 8 bootcamp on my Macbook Air and run SimCity 2013 on it. I am already able to run Call Of Duty MW3 fine on it with Windows 7 bootcamp.

Likely a new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display would be released before SC2013 is released. I hope that the upcoming SimCity game were available in the Apple App Store, albeit as a single-player version. This way, it would be as close to a 100% offline single-player mode as possible, just like with the Apple App Store version of Civilization V (being the only legal non-Steam version of the game).

That would be awesome. Hopefully they do follow the Civilization V model and go mostly offline for the Mac version, although I'm not holding my breath.

I am looking forward to purchasing it from the App Store though. Usually less expensive than the physical copy.

Thing is I don't want the MacBook Pro but the MacBook Air. Anyone has a clue how will the game run on a 13" model?

I'm on a 2011 MacBook Air, and SimCity 4 with the Universal Binary patch runs just fine. I would assume that SC2013 would be no different. In fact, I'd imagine it would actually run better, because it would be more optimized to take advantage of the multi-core processors.

When SimCity 4 was first released, I was running it on a Dual 450mHz PowerMac G4. There's more processing power in my phone now (which is a scary thought on its own).

Apple has created a pretty strong divide between OS 10.7 and 10.8, and what machines are able to run it (basically, nothing older than 2007 can run 10.8, except for maybe the high end Mac Pros). It will be interesting to see if they release it exclusively for 10.8 (thereby assuring that only newer machines, which would be able to run it, can run it), or will they release it for 10.7 as well. I don't imagine they'd go as far back as 10.6 though.

I see Maxis is taking orders for only the PC version for release in March. Does anyone have a sales date for the Mac version?
