I should have mentioned at the beginning that I'm just about on winter break now, so I have just over a month to see what loose ends I can tie up :)

That is great news - let me know if you need any help towards that end :)

Good luck on any finals, if you have any more.

Looks like Photobucket compressed my resolution again. Let's try Imgur :)

I hadn't even seen that! That's what I get for being gone so long, I suppose. Coincidence, I assure you. I started this model well over a year ago, as you'll see in my previous post  ;) But I'm really glad Sky's doing a recreation of the actual thing now that I've decided to go the fictional route. The real building is beautiful, I just lost the motivation to do a recreation.

I'm curious as to what made you add that wing to the front and take away the one from the side that the real life building has because from the looks of it, it looks like it would've fit snugly as a wall to wall 2x3 (if my Google Maps measurements are correct).

    Thanks guys :)

Sloonei - this one is fictional now, so it might wind up being pretty different, but I think using the same reference building should be fine ;)

Shy Dude - I was hoping to do that originally, but including the 1.6m setbacks for w2w, it didn't fit as snugly as I expected. It needed something to fill it out to the edge of the 3x3 lot, so I decided to pull that little wing over and use it for that purpose.

edward, hopefully sooner rather than later! I opened a few of them up the other day and did a little work on them, and I'm pleased to say that they're ready for texturing :)

Good news about the house set! I have somewhere around 24 total variations prepared (I'll probably do another 8 to round out the set) and they're coming along nicely. I expect you'll all be seeing them very soon!

In the meantime, I've been picking away at the art deco building. I still don't have a name for it, but I've cleaned up some of its roof textures and made a feeble attempt at black marble for the base. I just have to fix a couple textures (mostly in the back of the building that isn't shown in the render) and model the roof HVAC and then I can start on the night scene!

Looks great! Maybe you can export the side wing as a separate building.

    Hello again!

I've been slowly working away at the night scene since my last post here. It's been pretty tedious as I've been experimenting with displacement maps among other things. I have a result that I'm somewhat satisfied with, but I'd like to get your opinions because something about it doesn't work for me.

This is clearly my first time using target lighting :PHere's the reference image I've been using for that part.

The lobby isn't done yet, obviously. I think the part that bothers me the most is the crown of the building - the lower tier of spotlights looks fine, but the top tier seems a little bit off...I'd play with it more, but renders are lengthy so I'd rather come up with a few ideas first.

    What do you think?

The lighting at the top is very striking.  Like it.

The picture which you are referencing seems like the lightings is more yellowish.  Yours is a little subdued.  That might be what you are think is a bit off as it seems to be a little flat - not sure if flat is the right word.

I'd make the limestone a little warmer.

And I'd make the spotlights less green.

For the spotlights you should use Photometric Lights. And I think by default photometric lights cast shadows and stuff, but either way make sure that shadows are being cast. :)

I agree with Jason, I'd also add blinds to the windows, the glass doesn't seem quite believable yet, it's a bit grey and flat..imo :)

Wooow, I love those little theaters! The Paramount may be my favourite, but not by a huge margin because each and every one of them has its charm and its character. The roof grime on Watts is another highlight for sure. That, in combination with the dynamically curved sign and awning, and then those vivid colours on the front...
