I'm more intrigued as to how he got the nice diagonal bridge without it looking terrible.

Actually, mcarch and phoenix7, it's in the current NAM. And WillG_75, I think he used the diagonal on-slope piece, also in the current NAM. Am I right, Patricus Maximus?

Patricius Maximus:

Nice variation. I also like the way you used the newest NAM Highway Puzzle Pieces.

Thanks for the hint about the picture, this escaped me before when I looked through my post.

kj3400:

Thanks. I didn't know about it as well until a few days ago. The original discovery by Metarvo guided me on the right way with this 2.gif.

mcarch, phoenix7:

Both, the gentle curves and the diagonal onslope highway pieces (did someone even notice them 2.gif) are Puzzle Pieces which are available in the newest NAM. They can be found in the custom highway interchange menu.

(edit: Sorry for the redundant answers. Stupid page flip bug 34.gif)

Surely that curve is just using several of the 45 degree gentle curve puzzle pieces off the NAM?

DavidBrown: That would be correct.

I appreciate all of your questions about the curve, although frankly I didn't expect there to be such a response. But thanks anyway 4.gif.

I agree with everyone else, McDuell... Awesome.

Now, i'm a complete amateur at using the RHW, but I thought i'd show my first few interchanges here!

I'll show them in order of birth, firstborn to newborn:

I had made a few smaller interchanges previously, but I blew most of them up.  This is the first one I made that actually looked ok!  It's a part-sunken interchange of some kind. I'm no road geek, so I don't know how you'd classify all of these besides the cloverleaf to follow.

partsunken-800.jpg

partsunken2-800.jpg

Trying to make the smallest cloverleaf I could:

clover3-800.jpg

Trying to make one look a bit less jagged:

clover1-800.jpg

I'm a big fan of sunken networks, and for my upcoming new CJ I decided to experiment with sunken RHW, and try to find the best looking, functioning and most compact sunken interchanges possible.  I think McDuell has the right Idea with his first picture of that awesome post, but here's my attempts.  Again in order of birth, or to use a different analogy; evolutionary sequence9.gif

Quite a large, gentle sloped, lower capacity junction:

sunkenjunction1-800.jpg

Perhaps the smallest/highest capacity compromise I could manage:

sunkenjunction2-800.jpg

And finally... One that loooks like it might be the more efficient of the three.  Those roundabouts could do with an extra lane or two though!

sunkenjunction3-800.jpg

All three along a stretch of sunken highway:

3sunkenjunctions-800.jpg

I didn't have all the right dependencies installed while I made these, hence no walls.  When I get round to proper development i'll add walls like in the first two pics.

I look forward to some feedback!  I'm sure there are some out there who can spot my mistakes, or have hints!

This thread has been the inspiration for these interchanges as they are.  I wouldn't have had the first clue how to make these without all your examples to gawp at!

tepodon: How did you get that cloverleaf on water?

psander5:

Good interchanges for a newcomer at it 44.gif.

I'm no road geek, so I don't know how you'd classify all of thesequote>

Easy. Per interchange...

1: Classic Diamond

2: Full Cloverleaf

3: Classic Diamond

4: Classic Diamond (I tried it once myself; it works good 2.gif)

5: An unusual dumbbell interchange

Hope that helped.

I haven't been here in a bit, so I have some commenting to do.

beebs:  Saw it in SAC.  A beauty!

McDuell:  Thanks for making a tutorial here!  Seems a little complicated even for me, but I will give it a try sometime.

Patricius Maximus:  Amazing highway curve!  Looks awesome!

tepodon:  Nice work! overall!  I love that highway/cloverleaf in the water!

-I would space out your interchanges and avoid 90 degree curves to make it look more realistic.

psander5:  Awesome work with sunken RHWs!  Very cool!

    -A very realistic cloverleaf too!

-Like I said to tepodon, try to avoid the sharp 90 degree turns I see in pic 7.

TV-VCR:  A classic trumpet!  Great work!

blue sinjid:  An interesting junction.  Personally, I would advise against the HRS (highway restyling mod) because its incomplete (even though it states its complete).

-Look at the median and the shoulders for examples.  A shoulder should not suddenly start and end like at interchanges and change width for curves.  And lights shouldn't appear in the middle of the shoulder 3.gif  The line spacing also needs work.  It is because of this and other issues that I'd advise against it.

I haven't posted some in while, so here's a big showcase:

I thought I would drop in and say hi here.  Anyway, these are some impressive interchanges, everyone.

Patricius Maximus:  Wow, PM, that is quite a collector system you have there.  It is very detailed, and appears as though it is fully functional.

McDuell:  Oh, yes.  That technique.1.gif  I must say that you have certainly used it well, McDuell.44.gif This discovery is an example of what might happen when I become disappointed that a new network lacks diagonal functionality.

tepodon:  How did you get that cloverleaf on the water?  It's incredible!

Haljackey:  I've seen some of your previous work, and I really like what I see.  The variety is unparalleled.

    Keep up the good work!44.gif

Haljackey- do you have big dig signs that weren't released to the public? I'm seeing some with that distinctive blue that I definitely do not have.

Nice interchanges though, particularly the large RHW ones. They look very realisticly complex.

    tepodon:

Cool pics, especially the Cloverleaf on water. At first I thought you did it on real water, but the small land patches underneath the on-/offramps reveal the 'fake' water 2.gif. Nice pedestrian avenues you have, I love it.

    psander5:

Nice work on all the interchanges. I like the first picture most, with all the beautifications and the FARR! Btw: I don't like Roundabouts with more than one or two lanes, they generate weaving in the roundabout itself, and mostly they are too confusing to drive through (at least for me; we don't have roundabouts with more than 2 lanes in our country).

    TC-VCR:

I always like to watch this classic one, well done.

    blue sinjid:

Nice usage of the Maxis highways, I like it. I use the HRS myself; I just like the look of it, as I can use MHW and RHW together now. I know that the mod is unfinished, but looking from afar, one doesn't notice these graphic glitches that much anymore 2.gif.

    haljackey:

    Great interchanges, all of them!

In the first pic, is this draggable ElRail with integrated catenary props?? Looks awesome!

But you sure got my attention in a second way. This has to be about the utter nightmare for every train pilot. Weaving without end, level crossings and very tight curves: Rail power at its greatest 9.gif.

    tahill79:

You seem to be right. At first I thought that this was built on real water. I did this myself once to test out diagonal waterways. Yes: it is possible to have highways on water, you don't even need a plugin for this, plain old SC4 Deluxe is enough.

Sorry, no interchanges from me today, but one picture I have: the one with the diagonal waterways (NO photoshopping involved!).

    Bridges-15Feb001223759444.jpg

    As always: Have fun 9.gif

    Thanks for the feedback everyone!

DTP:  I was able to download the Big Dig stuff before it was locked.

McDuell:  Actually, thats not elevated rail at all!  It is APTX's bullet train mod which completely replaces the monorail network.  Check the SC4 Wiki article for more information:

What do you mean no interchange?  There's one right there!  3.gif

-Anyways McDuell, If you want to see more of my or other's work that isn't limited to showcasing interchanges (but are shown), you may want to check out a couple City Journals.

I run one called the Greater Terran Region (link in my signature), DTP (deathtopumpkins) has one called Virgin Shores, and PM (Patricius Maximus) runs a number of them.  Check'em out if you want when you get a free moment!

Haljackey: Some of the Big Dig stuff got locked? Hmmm... the only stuff I saw uploaded by Blahdy's still unlocked, and I have it... So why was the Big Dig project discontinued anyway? Those are some of my favorite things for SC4.

And McDuell, you've cracked diagonal bridges! I seriously never thought of using the diagonal elevated pieces for bridges... (I've only done it with ortho) That's a pretty nice shot too!

    haljackey:

Thanks for the clarification and the tips about the CJs. I haven't had much time lately 15.gif, but I sure will look further into them (skimmed through them already). There is an incredible amount of work in each one of them, and for that I congratulate anyone who has the time and patience to run a City Journal !

    Godzillaman:

    Thank you.

    all:

The Highway bridge is neither a bridge nor are those NAM pieces crossing the water. It's plain elevated draggable Highway. I just played around with the 'setsealevel' cheat in this map to lower the water while building the causeway and re-raising it again afterwards 2.gif. The only NAM parts belonging to the highway bridge are the diagonal transitions. The rail bridge consists of NAM puzzle pieces though.

A warning: The 'setsealevel' command destroys any existing bridges and tunnels in the city tile (same as with edge reconciling), so be careful. Also, after saving, quitting and reloading a city, the sea level reverts to default again, but without destroying anything existing.

    My latest "creation".

I never used this particular piece from NAM before,(el.higway over roundabout) and my fingers itched to do something with it.

This is what i came up with. Haven't a clue if this sollution has a real-life name.(probably not 21.gif)

Owaen -very nice! Love the use of filter lanes. That sort of interchange (without the filter lanes normally) is very common in the UK - it's just called a roundabout interchange.

Very cool, Owaen. I like it a lot!

One thing you can do to make it more realistic is to use the smooth ground-elevated highway transition puzzle piece found in the NAM. Other than that, a very neat looking roundabout interchange!
