The Autobahn interchange and railway viaduct of Jinnville...

Aw, man! That train job is awesome!!!! :D

Ok, I know I'm not much of a road guy, but I was kinda wondering... what do you guys think o'this?!??!

Well, do you plan to put anything in the middle? If not then all that empty space is pointless. You could group things a little closer aswell, I'll post later and show you what I mean.

Edit: Here's what I mean.

Sorry to sound so harsh earlier, I mean it in a way of constructive criticism.

Hey, no problem! I do appreciate constructive criticism (besides, I'm still a RHW novice! :D ). Yeah, what you did looks realy nice... and gave me ideas! :)

    Rock on!

EDIT: I was thinking maybe rest areas?

So I needed an interchange here, and somehow came up with this rather neat partial-Y/partial diamond hybrid.

Traffic coming off the RHW must turn left down the avenue, and traffic on the road can only continue into the avenue and not turn onto the RHW.

I'm not the biggest fan of that, it seems like the on/offramps for the rest areas complicate the interchange setup to a dangerous degree, especially since they break off to the left. It means that the traffic turning right off the highway will slow the right lanes down and the traffic turning left will severely slow that part of the highway down as well, since there are no deceleration lanes, creating a potentially dangerous area that, in combination with the curves just begs for rear-end collisions and congestion. Slow traffic suddenly merges in to the left where faster traffic would already be turning to the left lane to turn off. This might all just be a little overthinking on my part, but it's the way I look at it...

I don't see a problem with the unoccupied space in the middle. Put some flora in there and you're set; it's common for european countries at least to stuff wide medians with bushes and dense flora so you don't get blinded by the oncoming vehicle's headlights. Maybe throw some slight hills like dirt mounds in there and I see no problem with the wide space inbetween.

Hold on, I also just remembered there are FA-Splitter pieces you could use to split your RHW6 to RHW4 and an MIS lane that branches off to the middle orthagonally while the RHW4 continues in a fractional angle to the right. You could use that to connect to the rest area more smoothly. It will also give you larger curves which will increase the footprint but, if that's not a concern, looks nicer.

I absolutely love this ! Very compact, yet elegant, and quite high-capacity too. I love the rich neighbourhood.

But does traffic on the road have an opportunity to make a u-turn onto the RHW?

That's a nice interchange, Yoshi. (I just realized you play with RHD! Any particular reason?) Sort of an interesting way to control traffic flow.

The real problem I have with the interchange is the unnecessary weaving that occurs for the Rest Stop on/off ramps. It's unnecessary, and it's exacerbated by the fact that the exits are off of the fast lane. The exits should lead into the RA, and the entrances should lead out; many RL Rest Areas do this already, probably for this very reason.

the lane reductions are also strange and unnecessary; why reduce the freeway to two lanes on the north side after coming off the curve, if you're only going to reintroduce the third lane for deceleration purposes? The same goes for all the other non-exit related lane reductions (and I am aware that there currently isn't a left exit for RHW-6S; it's not a good excuse)

I'll need to create a second image of this where it's zoomed further in, but this is what I made in response to these posts:

    <>

Well, do you plan to put anything in the middle?

    zfqm.jpg

I thought to myself, "There's never a real need to use tunnels when using RHW, or rather, there's a diminishing need to do so." Then I thought of having an OxD interchange (ortho-diagonal) with actual offramps for appearance's sake and fluidity. Then I thought of having loops, but that didn't work, so I added lots of convolutions and FARHW.

Holy mother of pumpkin pie! that is beautiful!  :golly:

Now I said that I'd make a large view of that interchange, so...

I labelled all of the pieces used, but the position of the starters isn't labelled. There were far too many to count, and some of them technically don't officially exist.

Not bad, but it will look 100x better if you use a slope mod and one of the new L1 flyovers. ;)

They exist in real life though, where Highways pass by one another but don't actually cross, you sometimes get these.

Edit: Hold on here, I actually mistook the design. With so many ramps it's hard to keep track of what you're looking at. :D

Here's what I spent my afternoon on, after cromabianca's interchange inspired me to try my hand at it as well...

    FenderCountyAccesPointRestArea_zps720842

Not as compact and a little different with the connecting road ending at the highway but I do like what I came up with. Will show up in my CJ at some point once it's fully treed and the surrounding environment is completed.

I based it from a RL photo I found. The interchange was replaced by a SPUI setup. I guess they didn't find it practical in RL either. :golly:

Lost Realist: I think many of us here had something like this in mind. Leave compact designs for developed cities, recreational areas near highway are usually build in rural areas where You don't have to bother with tight space. Anyway, Youre the one who made it neat like this. Good use of RHW :)

This isn't the one near the Detroit airport is it? I know that one had a setup like yours and was switched to a SPUI,

Strange switch, seeing as it doesn't actually use less space. Maybe it was too confusing?

I actually do see a pretty notable reduction in footprint. There's also less actual interchange-related road surface, so less maintenance cost although that might cancel out against the new traffic lights at the SPUI. There's probably some reason to do with traffic and the directions it predominantly flows.

Wow long quote, but I'm glad I wasn't going insane there.

I made a interchange with RHW 5.0 that mimics that old junction, but it is actually based off a similar junction in South Carionia
