Weeell, okay. Werider.

And as for this mystery stuff...

...it was Col. Mustard in the Parlour with the rope; the voice actor for the meerkat being Nathan Lane.

    Schulmanicus: Temple Terrace

As Schulmania continued to expand, the need for more homes and businesses and government grew on the home island of Schulmanicus. One area where additional growth was especially needed was in religious administration. The Sacred Precinct, the original home of Schulminion houses of worship, became too small for the massive population boom and too distant for colonial Schulminions. Establishing Babalonia took the pressure off of the original houses of worship for some time, but the burgeoning population of Schulmanicus, coupled with the bureaucratic requirements of religious administration, led to the need for support facilities. The original temples were built on a large hill. There are no other facilities on the hill, so clergy and laity alike would have to trek from nearby towns up to the Sacred Precinct. There also was o formal religious training institution in the area, creating hardship for those seeking to enter the clergy. To address this convergence of needs, it was decided to build a town on the northeast coast, at Temple Point. This town would house administrative buildings for the various religious institutions as well as a national seminary. Housing for support staff and other amenities would also be included. The plan was modified to also include a national headquarters building for the Bureau of Feline Affairs, a building sorely needed to coordinate feline business across the burgeoning nation.

The consulting firm of Morrill & Associates was selected to coordinate planning for the town. An important precondition of development so close to the Sacred Precinct was restriction on the style of building constructed. Civic buildings would be constructed in the Temple Style, to blend in with the older structures up the hill. Other buildings were to be primarily of brick construction and primarily in the Island Style, which had gained an enormous following in the colonies. The limited scope of the settlement, both by geographical limitations and by narrow purpose, offered multiple constraints on town organization. It was decided to terrace the land by the shore, a first in Schulminion construction. This would allow for greater development. Three levels would be terraced on the hillside. The lowest level would have two streets, Via Carolina and Quercus Promenade, which intersect at Schulmanicus Circle. The middle level would parallel one of the Circle’s quadrants. The top level would crest the hill.

Let’s examine the new town from several angles, and then we can see individual buildings close up.

    townviewwideur4.jpg

The three terraces of the town. The highest is crowned by the National Seminary. The middle level features shops and offices. The lower level hosts homes, businesses, and administrative buildings.

Several Temple Style civic buildings form the heart of Temple Terrace. Most of the civic structures were built along the Quercus Promenade. The three structures along this road are the Central Office of the Bureau of Feline Affairs (BFA), the High Temple (the administrative seat for religion in Schulmania – the organization which oversees the Sacred Precinct and operates all temples, churches and seminaries), and the Temple Terrace Administration Hall (home of the town government and civic agencies). Further down the Promenade, along the shore, is the Rostrum. Continuing a tradition which began long ago but not far away (in Stell, as a matter of fact), the Rostrum offers all the opportunity to exercise free speech and weigh in on all matters, large and small.

    townviewwide2wb9.jpg

From this angle, it is easy to see the steep nature of the land at the base of the Sacred Precinct. Terracing was essential- otherwise, the town would have been strung along the coast like a necklace.

    townviewwide3ty0.jpg

This angle shows the view of Temple Terrace from the pinnacle of the Sacred Precinct. Despite the extensive terracing and construction, no direct road was built between the town and the temples. It was discussed and may yet be built. But, for the time being, the Schulminions seem to enjoy walking through the forest to get to the temples.

    churchhqcityadmincj4.jpg

The High Temple (left) and Temple Terrace Administration Hall (right) employ many of the residents of the town.

The High Temple is not so much a place of worship as it is a headquarters for the religious authorities. The temples on the hill did not have office space or secular rooms for conferences, receptions and other functions. The day-to-day operation of the temples requires a goodly amount of organization and clerical duties. Those in religious support staff roles, as well as the religious leaders themselves, needed workspace. In essence, it is a religious office building. It is called the High Temple only because it serves as the “capitol” for religion. It does have a chapel inside where small services are performed, but it is not a place where regular services are held.

The Administration Hall hosts town government offices and civic agencies. The second floor is devoted to a comprehensive school and extensive research library. Local special interest groups often meet here in the evenings. Some of the clubs and organizations who regularly use rooms include: Nights Templar (astronomy club), Schulminion Scouts, Rise and Shrine (early morning fitness club), and Holy Rollers Skating Club.

    bfaseminarycityadminsy7.jpg

A wider view of this civic center shows the High Temple (center) between the Bureau of Feline Affairs (left) and Administration Hall (right). An interesting note is the extensive use of stone retaining walls in this multilevel terracing. The walls were designed by the engineering firm of Jeronij & Company. The successful introduction of terracing will no doubt lead to further development of some of the otherwise unsuitable land which has been discovered, as well as hilly land on Schulmanicus.

From this angle, the National Seminary is on the left, facing the Terrace. The High Temple is below it, facing the Promenade. Administration Hall is at the top right.

The BFA Central Office is just out of the frame of the image above. It would be at the lower left. This office was necessary to coordinate the efforts of branch offices across the nation. The highly successful Feline-in-Chief of the Gran Maru office, H. J. “Hoppy” Franciflora, was appointed Governor General of Feline Affairs.

    schulmanicusrexbfavr3.jpg

The BFA offices sat near Schulmanicus Circle, the main intersection of town. The innovative circular design of this intersection is an updated version of the plaza in Smightower.

Schulmanicus Circle is the main intersection of town. It is where the two lower terrace streets, Via Carolina and Quercus Promenade, intersect. Carolina runs from the ferry port to the base of the mountain. The Promenade runs from the shore to the edge of town. The circle plaza was inspired by the one in Smightower, which featured a heroic statue of Schulmanicus Rex, the mythological founder of Schulmania.

All of the residential areas and most of the commercial areas are on the lower terrace, along Via Carolina or the Quercus Promenade. The ferry port is located at the terminus of Via Carolina.

The ferry brings in worshippers as well as goods for Temple Terrace.

The neighborhood of Epiphany Estates anchors one quadrant of Schulmanicus Circle.

    neighborhood2jc1.jpg

Across Via Carolina from Epiphany Estates is a row of houses, Tabernacle Acres, which backs up to the cliffs overlooking the World Ocean.

The cliffs can be steep, as Bambi and her pals found out. Luckily, they brought rappelling gear and were able to climb back to safety.

    viacarolina1ex5.jpg

Via Carolina features mostly small multifamily homes and small businesses. Most residents enjoy spectacular views of the open water.

    viacarolinaendjg0.jpg

Residents along Via Carolina were protected by the sturdy masonry retaining walls. Though a dead end street, traffic remains comparatively high, as many enjoy strolling this picturesque lane.

    quercuspromenade4of5.jpg

Quercus Promenade, though, was a busier thoroughfare. Three main civic buildings fronted the street, as did Epiphany Estates and the Covenant Corners neighborhood (bottom left in the image above).

    rostrumcontextuk0.jpg

The Rostrum also fronted the Promenade.

The Hamby Estate is one of the largest homes in Temple Terrace. It is home to Bishop Hamby and his family.

Great update! So many pics and so much detail! A bit daunting I must say but really good. This whole temple business is much more complicated than I had first though. Wow, so much bureaucracy!! That is a very scenic city though! Very steep cliffs as you mentioned. I liked this part

The cliffs can be steep, as Bambi and her pals found out. Luckily, they brought rappelling gear and were able to climb back to safety.

RushHourFreak Thank you! I do like to have good detail and harmony with the parts of my cities. I have been working forever on the next few updates because I am trying to get the buildings in harmony but a few buildings keep coming up wrong. I demolish them and they come right back! When they cooperate, I will FINALLY be able to take the pictures and start the update!

Pipishere Thanks! Glad you liked it.

Cool region pic, I love the islands!  For some reason, your pics remind me of the Cayman Islands, except for the Greco-Roman theme you have going on.  I guess that doesn't make much sense does it?

Very nice new updates! It was also nice seeing the region pic. So are the Schulminions ever going to modernize anymore? Or maybe they're just too dumb to invent anything new lol 2.gif Keep up the great work!
