    Atkinos: Viva Schulmanidad!

The story of Schulmanidad is largely that of transitioning field to homes. Due to the Schulminion land use policies and preferences, homes tended to cluster close together instead of sprawling over arable land. We will examine the residential area, a good portion of which has been reclaimed from fields. We will also see the commercial and other entities which dominate the western half of town.

Let’s examine the neighborhoods of Schulmanidad. The clusters of homes are in a grid pattern, as the follow the layout of the fields over which they were built.

    residentialmaindragum7.jpg

As viewed from the west, this image shows much of the housing in town. The road on the left running up and down is Via Schulmania. The parallel street toward the right is Via Evelina. The cross street (left to right) is the North Coast Highway, which runs to the ferry port. The civic square seen partially in the upper left is Schulmañeros Plaza, a popular gathering spot located between the residential and commercial districts.

    residentialnext2farmsfy8.jpg

Housing abuts fields in this unusually configured town. The old farm trails are protected by decree as historic sites. Here, Torta Trail intersects with Via Schulmania. Some of the residents work in the fields or in the warehouses and food processing businesses. Others work in the service sector and some in manufacturing.

    residentialnext2farms2wk5.jpg

This wider view shows neighborhoods “boxed in” by field configurations laid out years before. Neighbors don’t mind it – the trails are handy for getting around town. Portions of Dulce (left-right), Torta and Pastelito trails can be seen in this image. The neighborhood on the lower left is Coimbra Crossroads, which is just east of Schulmañeros Plaza. The upper right neighborhood is Las Vegas de Chocolate (Chocolate Fields), named thusly because it was built over a former cacao field.

    residentialnext2farms3du6.jpg

A closer view of Coimbra Croassroads and the plaza. The building on the upper left corner of the plaza is the Escuela de Jorge Curioso (Curious George School). Adjacent to it is the new medical clinic, Collin Clinic & Veterinary Center. It serves the medical needs of all Schulminions and felines in the north coast area.

    residentialnext2farms4jn4.jpg

South and east of these neighborhoods, the farmland of Old Schulmania blurs the boundary line between the two areas. To the left, just past the intersection of Dulce & Postre Trails, is Tres Leches Fountain. On the other side of the fountain plaza is the easternmost neighborhood, The Fountains at Tres Leches (creatively named, eh?).

Some residential complexes bordered the sea. A seaside park, Plaza de las Fajitas Con Carne, serves as a focal point for neighbors and as a great location for outdoor events. Homes with a view of the sea do command a premium for the spectacular vista.

    waterfront2cb2.jpg

To the left of the plaza is Casa Corazon, the first home for elderly and disabled Schulminions needing greater care. With new advances in medicine and the opening of the second large medical facility, Schulminions are living longer than ever. The fourth floor, featuring expansive porches, is for elderly cats, who can enjoy the views and be taken care of by an attentive staff.

    waterfrontfromsouthit4.jpg

Viewed from the south, the waterfront area is scenic and inviting. The plaza separates Casa Corazon from the neighborhood of Adela at Aviles, which anchors the intersection of Via Aviles and the North Coast Highway.

    eastsidegs9.jpg

Viewed from farther out, the east side of Schulmanidad is a cohesive small town which makes good use of the existing infrastructure left over from the pre-existing farms. On the other side of the North Coast Highway is the commercial and industrial sector. The fresh water source, the town reservoir, is seen at the bottom of this image. Schulmañeros Plaza is on the right. The centerpiece of the plaza is Babalonia Park, a beautiful park with a showpiece fountain in its center.

    babaloniaparket9.jpg

Babalonia Park, the center of Plaza Schulmañeros, fills this frame. Many people came to sit on the benches and feed the pigeons. Then, the cats came by to feed on the pigeons…

Before we look into the civic and commercial district, we need to examine the engineering innovation created by the firm of Asturias & Lloyd, the reservoir. The concept of pooling water to store and use later was definitely not new; but, to do it on such a large scale had never been attempted. The reservoir pool was built to provide water for approximately 6,500 citizens. The population was nearly half of that, so there was plenty of excess capacity for future needs. The task of piping the water to homes was also a new challenge. In the aqueduct system, gravity from the downward flow of water allowed for easy delivery of water to homes and businesses. But, in the flat terrain of Schulmanidad, pressure was needed to ensure a good flow rate. This problem was resolved by having the main delivery pipes connect at the bottom of the reservoir, relying on the pressure of the water above to push water through the pipe system. The pool’s depth was ~5 meters (16 feet) when full. Though not an impressive water pressure, the depth was sufficient to allow for the needs of residents. The pipes were buried at an average depth of ~2 meters (6 feet) and ran in roughly a grid pattern matching the streets and trails. Neighborhood developers branched off of these pipes to deliver water to homes. The municipal government provided water connections for businesses. At a fee, of course.

    poolwideviewng6.jpg

In this wide view, the reservoir runs parallel to the North Coast highway and Asturias Avenue. It is lined with shops and businesses. The Mercado, central market for the town, is at the top left of the image. The Risa Resort Hotel is at the top right, at the end of Asturias Avenue.

    poolendnorthpf2.jpg

At the north end, along the North Coast Highway, shops line one side of the street and homes the other. The long, arcaded twin buildings at the top left are Debussy Farmer’s Market and Debussy Fish Market. Schulmanidad serves as a major food exporting center for Old Schulmania and the surrounding countryside.

    poolendhj4.jpg

At the north end, the Farmer’s Market faces east and the town’s library and archives face west, fronting Asturias Avenue. An interesting note about the reservoir pool: Schulminions discovered it has recreational value as well as practical value. Many came to swim or race toy boats along its pristine, mirror-like surface. One young Schulmanidad resident, Vittorio Emanuele Schulmanieri de Canali, age 11, pondered about those boats. His musings led to a life-long quest: to develop such reservoirs for real transportation on boats. He just knew it could be done! And, he would spend the rest of his life pursuing artificial water transportation channels as practical inland transit.

    residentialpoolxu2.jpg

The south end of the reservoir was flanked on most sides by homes. The large building set against the south end is Belva’s Boutique, retailer of fine and fashionable ladies’ dresses and accessories.

    poolmercadocityhallcafeqe7.jpg

This view of the south end, facing west, shows the Mercado, or central market. The road in front is Via Mercado. The road heading west at the top right is Via Mare. On the corner of Via Mare and Asturias Avenue is Carlos & Adela’s, the top restaurant in town. It features a special rice and beans dish which stuns your palate with the fresh herbs and vegetables as well as paralyzes your willpower until you’ve had a second bowl!

    commercialpoolej5.jpg

This south-facing image shows the full reservoir, surrounded by businesses on all sides. Not all businesses are commercial. Approximately 1/3 are manufacturers. Schulmanidad quickly gained a reputation for glassmaking and fine cloth weaving. Four glass manufacturers and three clothing producers line the reservoir, sprinkled in amongst the shops and offices. A new book publisher, Arlene’s Books, began operations in the tall building at the southwest corner (top right) of the reservoir area.

    poolfromeasthc0.jpg

From the east, the rows of distinctive Island Style buildings seem to march off into the horizon. Arturo Murano’s top-rated glass shop is in the center of the image.

The business district extends north and west from the reservoir area. In addition to commerce and manufacturing, several government facilities are located in this quadrant. As a center for agricultural trade, Schulmanidad hosts a variety of ancillary businesses; offices, traders, and of course government workers.

    poolfromwestxw5.jpg

Viewed from the west, the whole commercial district can be seen. The Mercado is the center of commerce in the area.

    marketiw9.jpg

The Mercado is the town marketplace. Over 50 shops are housed within it, ranging from a bakery to a jewelry store to a cat toy retailer. Nearly 1/3 of the town’s purchases are made in this one building.

    marketsquarejb4.jpg

Market Square is a park behind the Mercado. It provides a pleasant walkway between the Mercado and the Mercantile Exchange (right) and Farmer’s Alliance Building (left).

    cityhallmercantilecv5.jpg

Schulmanidad City Hall and the Mercantile Exchange anchor the corners with Via Schulmania.

    cityhallregionaladmincobp5.jpg

City Hall and the regional administration complex fill the westernmost block of town, from Asturias Avenue to Via Mare. City Hall is on the right. Atkinos District offices face Via Mare. On the corner (lower left) are two small museums – one for local history and one an art gallery.

    viaschulmaniash2.jpg

Down Via Schulmania, headed west, offices line the right side of the street and homes the left.

    apalaccianocollegecityhkh0.jpg

Appalacciano College faces the sea at the corner of Via Mare. This was the largest institution of higher learning yet built in the nation. The west-facing wing houses elementary and secondary schools as well as a science laboratory. The north facing wing houses college classes and a medical college, first of its kind in the realm.

    waterfronthomesbidnesseqa4.jpg

At the ferry, commerce meets residential at the North Coast Highway. Debussy Farmer’s and Fish Markets anchor the northeastern corner of the reservoir area. The adjacent Figueira da FozCafé features fresh produce of the area and fine steaks from Old Schulmania. The special of the day is rib eye.

    resort1hr3.jpg

On the northwest coast is Risa, the first resort hotel in the nation. Schulmanidad was destined to become a vacation destination.

    resort2jk9.jpg

As if all you saw above was not enough to convince you to visit Risa and Schulmanidad, remember that the bartenders at Risa invented the piña colada and the daiquiri!

As the sun sets on this beautiful seaside town, friends and neighbors head home for dinner and an evening spent with loved ones. Thus ends another day in a land of boundless opportunity.

Wow, amazing mate, it really looks like Venice. I think you've got an incredible talent of creating a realistic old-style city in Sim City 4 which I think is incredibly hard!

keep up the amazing work mate!

UltraGIR XL Thank you. I appreciate your support. I am glad you enjoyed the update.

KingTitan Not subscribed?! I'm eager to get you back... if you subscribe now, we will give you a free gift... a 1 year subscription (at the low, low cost of only 5 schulmonetas) and you will receive a free pack on Schulmania trading cards... a 2 year subscription (at the low, low price 9.50 schulmonetas) and you get a 1 pound box of Busscastle Truffles!

Shanna Thank you. I enjoyed the sunset pic myself. I wanted to experiment with lighting a bit. Sunset is always a nice time to take pictures.

sc4portugal Thank you! I am glad you liked the café. You are entitled to free meals anytime. Just come on by!

Asturianu I am glad you like it. Your firm did a fine job. Schulmanidad would never have grown without your firm's help. To celebrate, swing by my house in Lloyd and we'll break out a tres leches cake!

Fallon144 Thanks! I would like to make a canal-based city like Venice one of these days.

fledder200 Thanks! I'm blushing! As the nation is growing, I can start expanding my bells-and-whistles list a bit and include more cool stuff! And, don't be surprised to see someone familiar... but it will be a while... (hehehe!)

Giligone Thanks. Actually, it was all going to be one, but it was broken into the first one and then this one. I was thinking about 3, but decided to soldier on. I have another follow up or two to this one in the pipeline already and I want to get them up and running. One is related to a hint I gave Narya.

RushHourFreak OK. Actually, we are working on similar stuff right now. But, Mickebear's larger blocks of residential may be more than what you're looking for in your CJ. I have been thinking about a more mountainous city, like what you have been doing. I am due for some hills again.

Pipishere Thank you! I enjoy the plazas as well. They add character to what otherwise would be densely packed blocks of buildings.

Hester Thanks! Now I'm blushing again!

    A little sneak peek:

In the next update... find out what Queen Narya did!

Thanks for asking. I see this as about mid-Rensaissance time, about 1500-1550. Of course, there are a few anachronisms, but that's where I am trying to stay for now.

Narya's Bakery has been selected as February's winner of Business of the Month. Located inside the Mercado, Narya's has quickly established itself as a local favorite. Specialties include the chocolate chip cookie and the nine layer chocolate frosted Ljubljana. Her oversize cookies have been a huge success, owing to her use of locally-grown cacao and fresh ingredients from Old Schulmania, and are now exported across the realm. Congratulations to Narya and her staff for this award. Come visit Narya's Bakery - where magical treats will leave you hungry "nevermore"!
