    Atkinos: Feliz Schulmanidad!

    Prologue

Several updates ago, when the results of the first census data were posted, there were some surprises about the low population of Schulmania. Recall that "Schulmania" has not yet been applied to the nation as a name. The name has only thus far been applied to a small region discovered south of Gran Maru and Atkinos islands. The area seems to be a fairly large island, as only the northern coast of it has been discovered. Settlement has been very sparse; most settlers are farmers. The most noteworthy aspect of the area up to this point has been Baby Monkey's discovery of the palm tree. Several hundred farmers and their families have made this area the breadbasket of the nation. The area was served by a ferry port and a small cluster of commercial structures by the port.

And now, back to the show.

The wealth created by the fertile farms of Schulmania has attracted more and more settlers. Commercial and residential development sprouted up by the ferry port. To serve this growing area, a missionary church was constructed between the farms and the ferry port.

    mission2vu2.jpg

The Mission Church of El Schulmanador provided an essential service to the farmers and the new settlers.

    mission1ee4.jpg

The grounds provided a popular gathering spot for nearly every occasion. Children enjoyed climbing the palm trees and dropping down coconuts. Their parents clustered under the umbrellas in the plaza and chatted. This had quickly become a community landmark and gave the farmers an opportunity to meet and commune with the new settlers arriving from the north.

    missionfarmsrl7.jpg

The mission was situated in the midst of large farms, convenient to the farmers established to the east and the new development to the west.

To differentiate the new settlements from the existing farm area, the newly developed area would be referred to Schulmanidad. The existing farming area would continue to be known as Schulmania. In recognition of Schulmania as the original settlement on the north coast, the coastal area would continue to be known as Schulmania. To prevent confusion, Governor Cawale signed a resolution naming the original settlement Old Schulmania and designating it a National Historic Site. This designation would protect it from redevelopment and preserve the structures for future generations.

    Welcome to Schulmanidad

Schulmanidad was partially carved from existing farmland. Other land was undeveloped or underdeveloped near the ferry port. Due to Governor Cawale's recent designation, the historic trails connecting farms could not be demolished to build new homes and businesses. Another important factor in developing the area was obtaining water. In areas with substantial residential development, a clean, reliable source of fresh water entailed an aqueduct system. The flat land offered no hilltop springs to exploit. A novel approach would be needed to facilitate growth. Several ideas were pondered. X-10 Laboratories proposed a giant grid of wells. This was dismissed as impractical. EMS Ditch Diggers proposed broad irrigation ditches which would supply public fountains. This was considered but, ultimately, rejected as too expensive. The third proposal was an innovative one by Asturias & Lloyd, a civil engineering firm based in Atkinos. Their analysis showed a good deal of rainfall and a low area with poor drainage. The solution seemed simple: construct a stone pool to gather and retain the fresh rainwater and then pump it via underground pipes to homes and businesses. The contract was let to A&L and construction began on the pool at once.

Once construction on the pool began, grading began to lay out streets and divide the tracts for development. Growth occurred quickly, filling out the low lying area with homes and businesses. Small businesses lined the pool as well. All construction featured fresh water piped in. The main street runs from the ferry to the south and is referred to as the North Coast Highway, though its original designation was Ferry Road. The main cross street is one of the original streets from Old Schulmania, which was renamed Via Schulmania.

Now, to observe the town from a wider angle.

    wideviewtossi3.jpg

In this view, looking south, the burgeoning settlement can be seen sprawling away from its axes, Via Schulmania and the North Coast Highway. The pool, which was officially designated as the Reservoir, can be seen adjacent to the highway. Residential areas are on the left of the highway, occupying some underutilized commercial zones and a few agricultural fields. Commercial buildings are primarily in the lower right quadrant in this image.

    townviewiwdefromswq8.jpg

Viewed from the opposite angle, south to north, the rapid transition from open field and woodlands to residential development can be easily seen. It is somewhat unusual to have such an abrupt transition, but Schulminions have historically clustered close together for housing instead of seeking larger expanses of low density single family homes.

    townviewwidefromevk2.jpg

From the east, where Old Schulmania's farms remain, one can easily see the main features of Schulmanidad. Directly below the south end of the reservoir is Via Schulmania, which runs to Old Schulmania and the farms that way. One block south is Via Evelina, which terminates at the North Coast Highway. The short road parallel to these, but to the north, near the coast, is Via Aviles. The old trails used by the earliest settlers are preserved. The trail between Vias Aviles and Schulmania is Dulce Trail. The three perpendicular trails shown in this image are, from top to bottom, Torta Trail, Pastelito Trail, and Postre Trail. It is more difficult to see the pedestrian only streets in the commercial sector in this image. A closer view will show these in more detail.

    townviewwidefromwip0.jpg

From the west, the closest zone is the commercial area. The business district roughly fills the quadrant north and west of the intersection of the North Coast Highway and Via Schulmania. At the lower left (northwest) is Risa, the first vacation resort in the nation. There are several hotels, inns and guesthouses, but no facilities before this had resort amenities.

Now that we have seen the layout of the town, let's set about exploring.

    Hey Schul,

    Very good one!

    Schulmanidad looks great, very "authentic"!

Like the small cove with the hotel.

Really liked the Mission church sector, nothing "spectacular" but so lifelike.... and sometimes creating a credible setup without bells and whistle is harder than putting a ton of "special effects" and this one I like!

    Keep it up!

    John

Hester Doh! It's back now and ready to be lurked upon!

Giligone Great! Come on by! There's some good shopping in Temple Terrace and some great sledding down the hills this time of year.

Yarabundi You are welcome to visit anytime! You can receive a free week's stay at the inn and will be given the grand tour by yours truly!

Narya Thanks! And there is a little mini-update you will find of interest... coming soon!

Shanna Thank you. You are so kind to stop by and comment. I will be keeping an eye on yours for great ideas for natural areas. I am so impressed with your start thus far. 31.gif

Jacqulina Thank you! I have so much fun making these.

IDS2 Thanks! It is the first true hotel in Schulmania. It should be a real hit with the Schulminions.

Giligone Thanks! Close up pix are on the way.

AfroThunda Thanks! I have the next update almost ready. It has some close ups of the various areas in town.

Benedict Thanks. Actually, I think the pool is a nice touch. My plan is to use this to jump start the idea of canals. Then I can have SimVenezia!

KingTitan Thanks! I am glad you like the logos. I do have a few helpers behind the scenes... 1000 monkeys at 1000 keyboards. Soon, they shall type the greatest story ever told!

Yarabundi Thanks! Actually, you are the first to notice my new water mod. I am phasing it in all areas now.

HabLeUrG Thanks. I like the contrast of field and town myself. I have several close ups of that coming up soon.

fledder200 Thanks. Always glad to have you stop by. BTW, don't be surprised if you see something/someone familiar in a few updates. Tee hee! I have a plan..... (insert evil laughter here..... MWA AH AH AH AHHHHHHHHHHH!) 10.gif

Voulpiotis Thank you! I see you are from Greece. I love Greece - the land, the history, the architecture... the FOOD! I would love to do a Greek town, but there are not enough specialized lots to do it with. I wish I had some spanakopita right about now (stomach rumbling!)

sc4portugal True! Atkinos has Igreja dos Gatos for the cat church. Maybe you could give me some good place names for my next city in Portuguese!

    Hester Gracias!

Darmok Thanks! Many of the cities are quite small and bell/whistle free. The early towns on Schulmanicus were tiny and kept in scale with the times and technology. Now, I want to start retrofitting some of them. It is very tempting to put a lot of flash into the cities, but I am trying to keep a period look. I am glad you like what I have done thus far.

Asturianu Gracias! I am glad you like it! Soon, you will have many close ups to admire too. I enjoyed doing this. And, your firm invented what will eventually be canals. I didn't know you were a civil engineer! ;-)

Fallon144 Thanks! I am so glad you like it. That's the effect I am hoping for.

Narya Thanks! And be sure to check soon for an update you will find of personal interest!

sc4portugal Yep! I was actually thinking about a Schulminion language, but decided it would be too much. But there is the cat language. I need to get something done in cuneiform for them soon!

RushHourFreak Thank you for stopping by. The farms are on the STEX as ploppable farms. There's quite a variety, but some don't show up when plopped (might be me, might be the lot... probably me!)

Jacqulina It sure is! 29.gif More is coming up shortly!

Shanna I think the Mediterranean houses would look great in your region. They are on the STEX - search under Mickebear.

football_fever Thanks! More is coming up as soon as I finish uploading pix to ImageShack.

Asturianu A few more things you will like are about to arrive!

Simcity Freak Thanks! Glad you liked it.

sc4portugal I think you will like a few additions in the next update. 2.gif

bat Thanks! I am enjoying this building type.
