About This File

The Flying Scotsman was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), emerging from the works on 24 February 1923 and initially numbered 1472. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class – the most powerful locomotives used by the railway.

By 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in London, the loco had been renumbered 4472 – and been given the name ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the London to Edinburgh rail service which started daily at 10am in 1862.

In 1928, it was given a new type of tender with a corridor, which meant that a new crew could take over without stopping the train. This allowed it to haul the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service reducing the journey time to eight hours.

In 1934, Scotsman was clocked at 100mph on a special test run – officially the first locomotive in the UK to have reached that speed.

LNER passenger locomotives had always been painted Apple Green. During the Second World War, Flying Scotsman was repainted in wartime black, in common with all railway stock. After the war, it became green again, and was rebuilt as an A3 Pacific.

In 1948, rail travel in Britain was nationalised with the formation of British Railways. Scotsman, now numbered 60103, was painted blue for a time, then BR Green. It remained in this colour until 1963, when it was retired by British Rail. By this time, it had undergone several alterations to improve its performance – but it had been pulling trains for 40 years (and 2 million km), and steam engines were becoming old-fashioned.

The engine travelled to America from 1969 to 1973, and Australia in 1988/89 where it set the steam train nonstop-endurance record of 422 miles.
Recently completely restored (with a new authentic A3 boiler), Flying Scotsman will be making special tours throughout the UK in 2016.

This implementation is the A3 locomotive in 4472 LNER Apple Green livery, without the smoke deflectors. The Carriages are the 1950s Custard and Red British Rail Mk1 carriages (more or less). It should be noted that English railway stock have the smallest dimensions of all railways - these are scale true at 4m tall and only 2.75m wide. The carriages are 19m long, and fit very well into RRW curves. There is a complete set of props to complement the automata and these can be used on their own. Prop families are: F5E800C0 Engines, F5E800C1 Carriages

This mod completely replaces the Maxis passenger engine and carriage and if mixed with any other extra Passenger engines or carriages will produce mixed consists (which sort of destroys the effect).

Holy mackerel, Batman, it is the Flying Scotsman! :ooh: Thanks, this is great, just what I need. :)

In fact I have been thinking to do something similar, but I don't have the skill for it. (yet :) ) Althought I would have loved to see Greasley's Teak coaches, but MK1s will do fine. :thumb:

Too bad that it is not possible to mix different passenger coaches. Or it is possible to mix but then it is a mix as the game can't recognise right engine to right coach. Then again this one could be a high speed train using the HSR. After all the Flying Scotsman was high speed train of its time. And then leave normal RRW for local trains.

Anyway, I would like to thank your effort. Your German trains have been my standard train mod and now this one nicely complements those. :) I did not rate this as I haven't test it in the game. My current test city doesn't no have railways. :( But I did open it in iLives reader to study and learn. When I have more time, I want to learn to make automatas. The wheels and rods animation seems to be a series of pictures.

One thing though. I hope you don't find my question rude, but is the texture of the engine based on photos of a  railway model? :???:

Thanks for your comments Bombardiere - I do actually have the teak ones in work in progress but texture data is hard to come by. As for the engine texture its made up of about 5 different ones - models, model photos, real train photos and my drawings. Its very hard to get photo material in profile so I usually have to identikit the textures by pasting bits and pieces together. The model has also simplified a bit to try and keep the number of triangles down.

The wheels are basically a set of animation frames shown quickly in order to make it look like they are moving. The mesh is made by hand and could still be improved quite a bit. It also still has a mesh to render smoke like my German engines but instead I've put on the MAXIS smoke effect. Don't Edit and Save this in Reader or the smoke will stop working.

The game can only match engines and carriages so if you have more than one engine its fine because a train only has one, but if you have more than one set of carriages they get all mixed up. The game doesn't have any idea of matching engines and carriages.

These carriages look OK behind the German Engines - the German stock is slightly taller and wider.  The German carriages will also look ok behind these engines. But the carriages mixed together looks a bit strange.

As you've prolly noticed from my 5 star review and my like on the file I love this. *:)

Two things I've noticed (and it might just be game glitches) are that it sometimes appears with the engine only and another times without its green paint scheme:

@CorinaMarie - a bit late in response I know - the black one was an extra I made for variation which you must have put in plugins with the main one. The glitch at the top - the game sometimes keeps ghosts on save - but to be honest, I've no idea why.

Very good work. I like. But the steam from the locomotive is not visible. There are also no illuminated windows on the train cars. Please update the mod.
