About This File
This series of maps is intended for use with Sim Mars
A ragged geological scar crosses the belly of Mars. Long enough to reach from New York City to Los Angeles, this great rift in the martian crust is named Valles Marineris, or Mariner Valley. It was discovered in 1972 by the Mariner 9 spacecraft.
Formed out of several parallel, connecting troughs, Valles Marineris dwarfs Earth's Grand Canyon in every respect, being wider, longer, deeper, and older. It easily earns the title of Grandest Canyon of All.
Location: -10°N, 290°E
Valley Size: 2371km x 1186km or 1473mi x 737mi
Due to the valley's size I mapped it into 64 zones each on a 16x16 region of large city tiles. I am only including the first 9 screen shots in a joined image to keep the upload down in size. Pick and choose which regions you wish to build on and discard the rest if you want or use them all if you have space after rendering. With some photo editing of contrast and brightness you can modify the depth of the canyons then tweek the water table depending on the desired level of terraforming you want in your game. Then when importing into your game I recommend use of a reddish brown sandstone terrain mod placed in a "zz " root folder.
