Another French Fry Skyscraper in New York? [Poll]
qazzy1122 replied to Duke87's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
I love art-deco. The ESB is my favorite building ever, period. Unfortunately, we aren't going to see any more of that style of building, or any other old style for that matter. Two main reasons why we should get used to the glass french fries: Only room for thin buildings - Larger buildings take more ground space. That didn't use to be a problem. There were plenty of blocks with only 3-4 floor buildings, which were easy to take down. Nowadays, midtown is inundated with massive buildings. It is very hard to find large plots to build wide buildings, without needing to tear down a few 30+ story buildings, which ain't easy. Easier to find 1 relatively small building in a nice location, tear it down, and replace it with a 1000ft+ needle. Only money for glass walls - Beautiful facades like those on the ESB and Chrysler cost lots of money. When as much money as possible is going into height, engineering problems, and interiors, not much money is left for the exterior facades. Also, developers want to maximize window space, so they make the entire building a window. Also, I plan on living in NYC at some point in my future. I currently live in the suburbs 10 minutes north of the city, and don't want to see the city creep into my area... I'd rather go there. -
Buildings many people didn't even know they were existing
qazzy1122 replied to Toothless Stitch's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Wow! So that's what it is! I live on the other side of the hudson from that building, and it is the only tall building I can see in that area. Never know what building it was until now.- 961 Replies

Now that NAM 32.1 is out for Mac users, many SC4 players (including me) are getting their first taste of NAM in all of its glory. From you seasoned NAM veterans out there, what are the best ways you can improve your already-built cities with NAM?

When was this installer added? How can someone who gets a PC friend to open the .exe access it from a mac? -

You mention an update that allows you to pick and choose which files you run and which files you do not. The NAM page here on SimTrop says the file hasn't been updated since January. Am I missing something? -
Who uses money cheats/mods?
qazzy1122 replied to SUPERniceTODAY's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I have yet to use cheats in any of my cities. I like the challenge of building a nice looking city while keeping a balanced budget. Also, I always end up with a few million after a while so I can do big developments without putting my city in the red. I honestly don't understand what people find so hard about getting a balanced budget... -
CO$$$ / CS$$$ buildings turn into black

How the heck am I supposed to keep traffic high, while still using mass transit? My big problem in my main city is that the subway lines underneath it all make traffic very low for the entire city. Any way to fix this without having terrible traffic on my roads?- 6 Replies

We do generally know what is causing the original post-Rosetta issues now. I've made a post over at SimTarkus which describes where we are at with everything. I hope it clarifies things for the Mac userbase. -Tarkus Thank you for the help!

So does this mean that certain mods within NAM that currently crash the game on Mac will be patched?

I'm starting a new region, and don't want to deal with the slow build-up to high density that I normally deal with, as it normally leads to poor road organization that is too costly (demolition-wise) to fix. Any ideas on how to organize a central city that can handle high traffic and enable a CBD to be constructed? This question is specifically aimed at the use of avenues or not, and how so.
-
Ok, other than the pathfinding fixes (<---what file is this?), the only other thing I currently want out of NAM is a 1 wide road with higher capacity than the normal. Is this in NAM? Is there something at all like what I am describing within NAM?

#1: The NAM does not include those. For road-top stations like that, check out the Road-Top Mass Transit (RTMT) package. Make sure you get the most recent package (released by z1). #2: The NAM is ultimately scalable; you can install as little as just the traffic simulator plugins (which will make the game's traffic patterns more logical--and works in conjunction with the most recent RTMT), or you can go full blast and install advanced features like the RealHighways and Dual-Networking. And you can always go back and expand/reduce your package as you go. As far as the incompatibility issues, if you're intimidated by that, wait until we have a publicly-available release that works with the new port. There are some other complications we're still going to have to work out before we can actually release things (i.e. the fact that the port is unpatched, and the recently-discovered file number limitations and internet connectivity issues). In your case, I'd just start out by picking one of the Traffic Plugin files--"Medium" is usually the default--and go from there. -Tarkus Thank you for the advise! I think I will just use the traffic plugin for now, but advance onto some of the more complicated stuff once a version for the new port is made. I am very glad that you and your team are so active in helping people, it really makes the whole experience a lot better. -

So I downloaded NAM, and installed it, and removed the files that I THINK op was talking about. To be honest, op's guide was EXTREMELY confusing, so I am still not sure whether I took out more than I needed or less or what. Anyway, I have read through the READ ME and the FAQ, but I still am not sure how to work some of the road peices, nor do I feel that it is worth learning. The only thing I really want is a subway/bus station that can be placed on roads. AND MY QUESTIONS: Does NAM contain a subway/bus station that can be placed on roads? If so, where? Is it worth trying to learn how the rest of it works, even when I can't use a sizable portion of it due to incompatibility with macs? -
China to Overtake US as World's Largest Economic Power

Thank you for your advise. I think I will start with a grid layout w/ avenues every so often, but start with low density and grow the city organically. If you have any more tips, feel free to add.

China to Overtake US as World's Largest Economic Power
qazzy1122 replied to CapTon's topic in Current Events
The fact that China may or may not have passed the US in GDP (either now or in a few years), doesn't really matter. Culturally, Economically, Militarily, and Diplomatically, the United States still vertually manages ("controls" is a bit too strong) the world as we know it. The GDP rankings are nice to look at, but have little meaning in GeoEconomics and GeoPolitics.- 22 Replies

High demand, yet relatively sparse high-density buildings
qazzy1122 posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
My center city of my region, with a current population of 140K, is completely full in terms of space. The only direction I can develop is upwards. Most of my C demand are 4000+. I have zoned all high density, all the utilities and services are present, and my city planner keeps telling me we need more office space. Yet I am still stuck with only a dozen or so large (300+ pop.) office buildings, and mostly small ones. Any way to fix this? Any advice?
