  1. I'm worried about road layouts.

I don't really know, but up until now it had never occur to me to build a giant city laid out as a penis, so I guess I know what I'll be doing for my next city. ;-)
  2. @Vampirovibrio, I agree that there are more important bugs they should be fixing, bugs that really do hinder the gameplay experience. I just want Cheetah speed to come back because it shouldn't be something that requires ANY coding, just a on/off switch. It's not a change that should take more than 2 seconds so I don't get why it's still being withheld.
  3. Ever wonder what defines a Canadian?

Jack Layton was a real hero, and I really hope that Olivia Chow steps up to take some leadership in the opposition. On the topic of rising superstars, there's also Justin Trudeau. I remember when he won his first riding because I lived in Montreal at the time, people were asking him about plans to become PM and he responded with "Hey guys? I just won my first riding, chill out and give me some time before I take over the country, alright?"
  4. So what's the point of having import from a local city if you're paying the same price as you would to the global market? Just so the exporting city would get the profits? Wouldn't that just happen anyway if it was exporting to the global market? I don't see the difference.
  5. I know this is going to be unpopular, but I really rather like the smaller map aspect. I like the idea of making the most out of a small piece of land, of not being able to have EVERYTHING and having to make do with several cities working together. I really like the idea of building the biggest region as opposed to cities, and I actually find it a more realistic approach to city micromanagement. I work as a civil engineer, and I loved Sim City 4 as well. But it sprawled beyond what you could completely control at one time, I had corners of my map that would be turning into slums without me noticing. I know there are a lot of people here who love building sprawling cities, but I think the challenge of building a high-population high-density small city to be much more engaging than a high-population low-density city where all you needed to build bigger was to build wider. The idea of having a set constraint and forcing you to find use of every inch of land, doing urban renewals where necessary and starting over when things need to be bigger, that feels much more like real city planning to me. With that said, I find the ideology mentioned above to be at odds with what actually goes on in the game. The trading aspects between cities in a region should be easier, there's no reason why one city should have to gift resources like oil or coal to another, rather than an automated trade process. I watched a video that sort of simulated this, but it didn't reduce the cost of importing from another city vs. importing from global market. That's a major flaw. How can you expect cities to build cooperatively towards a great region if something so simple as trading resources is such a pain? Then there's the roads issue. If building the highest density with least amount of traffic involves building a giant 1-road intersectionless city, then that's absurd. I do mostly roads design and planning, so I love that the new SimCity depends so much on your roads design, but it doesn't realistically simulate traffic patterns. It also doesn't put the transit modes into the best use. Why don't the sims know how to use streetcars and buses in conjunction with each other? When the maps light up to show your coverage by streetcar or bus, they should really be showing up together, because in real life, you would take a streetcar across large stretch of the trip, then bus to the more specific destination. You should be able to have a transit network with streetcars as the spine, and bus branching out like capillaries. The game has yet to address this issue. So yeah, I really appreciate the ideology of the game, I think the initial "vision" that the developers had was actually very valid. I just don't think it was executed properly. Then again, these are all things they can fix and patch up now that they've forced online only. So I fully expect these issues to be fixed. It might take a really long time, but I do look forward to the complete package when this is done.
  6. Joining a Region

    Yes we should!
  7. Great tip, disgusting idea, but really great tip.
  8. Origin Friends

Hello! I'm always looking for new people to play with, so please add me if you're looking for people to join! Origin name is viviancyu, and I usually play non-sandbox mode.
  9. Joining a Region

I saw filters on the first few days after the game released, but not since they turned off those "non-essential features".
  10. Show Us Your Photos!

Oh I really like the ones with the old trains, and the evening city scape. I have a real soft spot for urban setting photos. I just got a mirrorless Olympus camera, because I travel quite a bit and I want a nice camera that's light and also dummy proof. I'm not really a photography hobbyist, I don't have the time or patience to learn about all the settings on a DSLR, but the Olympus is really friendly and easy to use. It produces great photos and really helps capture the travel experience.
  11. Wow, that's amazing. I've been wanting to build an arcology from the start but have come nowhere close to having enough resources. This has really set it as my target now. Awesome video. =)
  12. "Fudged" population discussion

Yeah I hate that when a building is being upgraded either in wealth or density, it takes the population down for a while. It's especially bad when you're in the process of building a highrise condo, it plummets and then suddenly shoots up like crazy. It wouldn't be so bad or so noticeable if we had Cheetah but we don't, so I just sit and watch it slowly build back up. Super annoying.
  13. A good post for SC newcomers. I think new players tend to overlook the data maps quite a bit. It's not hard to run a successful city once you know how to use them. My only question is about the bonds. I've started about 5 mid-sized cities now (70k-120k) and have never touched the bonds. Does it really make much of a difference to take one out at the beginning?
  14. Still waiting for Cheetah mode. Regional achievements are back but not cheetah? Boo.
  15. Isn't the reddit post saying how the destruction doesn't actually sync to the cloud, so everything is restored as soon as you leave?
  16. Who wants to start a region together?

This sounds great! I've been trying to find people to play cooperatively with, but they always abandon their cities. Please add me! My origin name is viviancyu.
  17. Why roundabouts are cool

As a heap of my fellow engineery-types will no doubt point out, in real life this is exactly what happens. Traffic lights are hooked up to sensors and can adjust their phase lengths to account for queued traffic on a red, or a continuous flow on green, both, or neither. When used dynamically, lights are definately more efficient than roundabouts. Roundabouts are useful though as an intermediate step between a priority intersection (low volume) and lights (high volume). However, from what I've seen in SC to date, roundabouts won't do a thing to those traffic jams. Exactly this. Most traffic lights are hooked up to induction loops or cameras that can monitor for vehicles and queue lengths. It's rare that a busy intersection would have manual timed signals anymore. Roundabouts are certainly preferable to stop-controlled intersections, and they work well in low capacity, but at higher capacity or places where there's a great differential between cross roads traffic, it's better to have lights. I would love to see SC have roundabouts, and I've seen some designs where people just... lay roads down to look like roundabouts, but as far as I can tell there's no "yield" in SC traffic so I'm not sure how real roundabouts could actually be implemented.
  18. Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey, I'm Vivian. I'm in my 20s and I'm a civil engineer. I love all Sim games (except for Societies) and can't wait to get started playing with some more people.
