Offline-Only Mod: "UniDirectional Networks (UDoN)"
JaceTwice commented on xoxide's file in SC13 Game Mods

So now that the offline patch is live, are you modders making bigger maps?
JaceTwice replied to nafeasonto's topic in SimCity (2013) Modding - Open Discussion
Indeed. In fact I'd think that just looking into custom regions in general would be a great starting point on the path to figuring out how to modify the properties of the cities themselves. I can only imagine that custom regions were one of the things that maxis had in mind for it's modding plans. -
Maybe we need some buildings that provide powerful capacities to utilities?
JaceTwice replied to peterkl's topic in SimCity (2013) Modding - Open Discussion
Indeed, that kind of stuff will have to wait for offline mode to come out. Then the modding policy and rollbacks won't be an issue. -

Offline Mode Coming Soon
JaceTwice replied to hellmunkey's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Not sure i agree, there are big 3D games that are modded heavily like GTA and Skyrim. With the likes of Blender and Unity available to the masses, more and more people know how to program & make 3D art. Compared to the days of when SC4 was released. Indeed, the 3D capabilities of the general public has grown exponentially since the launch of sc4. You really can't sell the general SimCity community short when it come to modding talent. I'm sure bringing CS4 to it's current point couldn't have been a cakewalk either. -
SimCity 4 or SimCity (2013)?
JaceTwice replied to GeometryMath Algebra's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Genuine question: Does the the way the highway is built in that sc4 screenshot actually make significant difference to traffic running across it? I've never taken the time to build something like that myself because I find I can't focus on a big project like that in a game if it's just for show and as far as I can tell, the traffic simulator in sc4 is not quite sophisticated enough for an interchange as sprawling and realistic as that to make a big difference in commute times. I could be wrong though. That's one of the main reason I like SC2013 a whole lot. With the way they've build the simulation I get a better sense of what everything I'm putting down is doing. Even if it's not as pretty or diverse as what's possible in sc4. When it comes down to it though I like both a lot, but for different reasons. -

Interesting how the "clean" and "dirty" paths can both use the others buildings and services to try to get ahead, -
Discussion about City Tile Size
JaceTwice replied to alex macnamara's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
It's one thing to have a bunch of polygons on screen, It's entirely another to have an active simulation running at the same time. the comparison you're making just doesn't hold up since (as far as I can see) there's no simulation happening here. Just drawing polygons to the screen is very cheap so of course you're not getting dips in your framerate.- 1,284 Replies

The State of Simcity - EA/Maxis speaks
JaceTwice replied to baertooth's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Perhaps, though with what is basically a confirmation of an upcoming offline mode, and the recent discussions of specialized regions for full scale mod support. I can only imagine that bigger cities are still an inevitability. Even if they don't end up as an official feature. -
EA proposes restrictions on SimCity (2013) mods that “affect the simulation”
JaceTwice commented on Haljackey's article in News
A prime example of clickbait and journalistic spin if I've ever seen one. Of course it doesn't mention that the other 13 pages of the thread are filled with developers excitedly proposing the creation of a separate mode specifically for the free modding of the simulation. And those examples they mention are definitely NOT the only things EA is saying you can do with modding. They're just throwing out things that could be possible. -
DLC-For-Charity: Partnership Between EA and Red Cross
JaceTwice commented on Haljackey's article in News
I'm inclined to agree. People are free to feel whatever they like of course but I really can't find anything to complain about here. The DLC is optional and the red cross gets a minimum of $100,000 from EA. -
If there were a "NAM for 2013" mod package, but EA keeps the DRM, will you still buy SimCity 2013?
JaceTwice replied to GeometryMath Algebra's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Also what do people mean when they say NAM for SimCity2013? A mod that has the same features as the current NAM would be much less of an improvement in SC2013 than it is in SC4 given that there's no grid to be broken, though I'm sure improved traffic AI would be appreciated. Now if we were talking about a similarly monumental mod that that fixes SC2013's specific problems, that would be a different ballgame entirely. Have you seen some of the strides that the our current set of modders have been making with the game? There are some impressive developments taking place for the limited access to the game we currently have. I'd be willing to say that the the raise/lower tool that was modded in even had a hand in getting us the one that's going into that update 7 you're testing. -

Personally I'd prefer a mod team that could appreciate the art style they've got going on already. I'd be really disappointed if participating in future mods means destroying the current aesthetic. -
Found Stone Librande's SC 2013 Maxis Presentation PDF!
JaceTwice replied to fighterfungus's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I don't feel dissapointed with what I've got. Everyone's opinions have equal weight no matter how many people are on their side. Also it's not like the modders just unlocked some latent feature that Maxis turned off. They're just modifying the height property of the roads that are already in the game. It's likely that Maxis mimicked the functionality of the mod within the game's code itself so everyone has easier access to the idea the modder's had. -

JaceTwice replied to GeometryMath Algebra's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I think all you'd need is a way to make one-way roads. That combined with the raising and lowering tools in update 7 would make a NAM-like package pretty redundant since you'd probably be able to draw any kind of network or interchange you wanted at that point. -
Good for them. I'll be interested to see what they can do away from the world of AAA.

Courtesy of the GDC Vault, this free GDC 2013 video sees Maxis' Dan Moskowitz defining what a sandbox game is and sharing lessons learned from building the team's latest sandbox title, SimCity. Moskowitz defines sandbox games as "goal-free exploration games, where fun is derived from discovering how the game mechanics work." Here, Moskowitz explores how Maxis discovered what worked in its own sandbox using the Glassbox simulation engine, with lessons including determining granularity, finding and re-using patterns that work, figuring out how to scale, and exploring mechanics "breadth first". http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/193358/Video_Building_SimCitys_sandbox.php

I always place down health first. I play slowly so my low wealth sims always end up sick before anything else becomes a problem. -

DLC you would want to see for this game.
JaceTwice replied to cubercaleb's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
So one way roads essentially? Sort of? I'm talking about control over individual lanes in any one road. Essentially a system that would allow you to attach and break off individual lanes as you see fit, making just about any sort of road setup possible, real of ridiculous.
