    McCall, Idaho This region is based on DEM data with small alterations for playability. The region is focused on McCall, Idaho and Payette Lake, with the surrounding Lick Creek Range. The image has been rendered with CPT’s Olympic Terrain Mod. The region itself was terraformed to fit with both the textures of this mod, and the height at which rock/snow begins and I highly recommend it. You can, of course, use any terrain mod you please with this region. (NOTE: Higher elevations have been left rougher, as this makes more snow visible with the Olympic Terrain Mod, if you use a different terrain mod that makes this roughness undesirable, it is easily smoothed either in Terraformer or in game.) Installing the Region SC4 Terraformer 1. Unzip the file. 2. Create a new region folder in your SimCity 4\Region directory. 3. Replace the config.bmp file with the config.bmp file you downloaded with this region 4. Open the new region in Terraformer 5. Click 'Import Image' in the Global Tools Menu and browse to the unzipped folder and select the map file for this region. 6. When the file loads choose 'File' and click 'Save'. (The region is now saved to SC4). 7. Load your region and play, the cities will take on whatever terrain mod you have (or the default SC4 terrain if you have no mod) as soon as you open them.     Bellingham, WA. This region is based on DEM data with small alterations for playability. This is most evident in the courses of the rivers and the lakes, as these areas had to be adjusted in terms of elevation in order to appear as water. This region focuses on the city of Bellingham, WA and Lake Whatcom. The image has been rendered with CPT's Olympic Terrain Mod.   5. Simcity 4 isnt that great...

    I like SC4 because I don't enjoy playing games all that much in truth, and I am able to treat it more as a design project. I like to create large regions that look good on a macro level, even though I still like to do work on a micro level in my cities. I don't "play" the game, I use cheats so that I can build the city on an endless budget and don't look at it as though I'm creating a city through time but rather constructing a recreation of a city at a static point in time, which in turn is part of the region I am creating at a static point in time. I like to create final products rather than play through the process of an ever-evolving city. I realize this is certainly not what most people like to do with SC4 which is probably why 2013 is really attractive to people who actually like to use the game as intended in a simulation fashion. For me it's about the region and that's why 2013 just won't cut it for me.

    North Cascades. This region is based on DEM data with small alterations forplayability. This is most evident in the courses of the rivers and the footprint of the lakes, as these areas had to be adjusted in terms of elevation in order to appear as water. The region is focused on the North Cascades of Washington State. The map is bounded on the north by the 49th parallel and the border with British Columbia. Mount Baker is the large volcano in the NW of the map. Baker lake is the large boomerang shaped lake to the east, which feeds the smaller Lake Shannon below, which ultimately drains into the Skagit River, which runs through the SW corner of the region. The northeast portion of the map contains the smaller Diablo Lake, and larger Ross Lake, which extends north into Canada. Most of this region is wilderness located in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest or North Cascades National Park. The image has been rendered with CPT's Olympic Terrain Mod. The region itself was terraformed to fit with both the textures of this mod, and the height at which rock/snow begins and I highly recommend it.   7. Idaho Panhandle

    correct.  Once you've saved the region with SC4 terraformer (directions included in the readme) and open the cities for the first time in game, they will take on whatever terrain/water mods you have, and the default terrain/water if you don't have any.  I certainly recommend the Olympic Terrain mod as the map was created with those textures/rock/snow levels, etc. in mind.  Any mod will work though and I'm sure there are plenty of others that would look good as well.

      hmm,where do you get the error message ?  I downloaded the file and installed it through terraformer to check for any issues and it worked for me.

    Idaho Panhandle. This region is based on DEM data with small alterations for playability. The region is focused on the Panhandle of Idaho. The map is bounded on the north by the 49th parallel and the border with British Columbia, to the west by the border with Washington state and to the east by the border with Montana. The large lake dominating the map is Lake Pend Oreille, fed by the Clark Fork entering from the east. The town of Sandpoint sits on the lakes northern shore. The lake in the northwest of the map is Priest Lake. The river flowing through the prime farmland to north is the Kootenai, the town of Bonners Ferry sits on its banks. The image has been rendered with CPT's Olympic Terrain Mod. The region itself was terraformed to fit with both the textures of this mod, and the height at which rock/snow begins and highly recommend it.     This region is based on DEM data with small alterations for playability. The region is focused on the Beaverhead Mountains of Southwest Montana. The range marks the border between Montana and Idaho and it's crest forms a portion of the continental divide. The only city of any note that lies within this maps borders is Salmon, Id. Salmon sits at the confluence of the two valleys in the southwest corner of the region. The image has been rendered with CPT’s Olympic Terrain Mod. The region itself was terraformed to fit with both the textures of this mod, and the height at which rock/snow begins and highly recommend it. You can, of course, use any terrain mod you please with this region.

The image has been rendered with CPT’s Olympic Terrain Mod. The region itself was terraformed to fit with both the textures of this mod, and the height at which rock/snow begins and I highly recommend it. You can, of course, use any terrain mod you please with this region. A desert mod would probably be a good choice if you would like to create a realistic version of the region. (NOTE: Higher elevations have been left rougher, as this makes more snow visible with the Olympic Terrain Mod. If you use a different terrain mod that makes this roughness undesirable, it is easily smoothed either in Terraformer or in game.) This is a larger region at 16 x 12 large city tiles. Be warned.

    A region based on the Clark Fork of northwestern Montana. The region includes the river Clark Fork, the St. Regis River entering from the west, and the Flathead River entering from the east. Where the Clark Fork enters at the bottom of the region, to where the St. Regis enters from the west is the route of Interstate 90. Superior, MT is located on the southern end of this portion while St. Regis is located at the confluence. The map also includes the town of Paradise, to the north of the confluence of the Clark Fork and Flathead rivers, and Patrick's Knob, the high peak directly to the west of the confluence. The region size is 9 x 8 large cities. The region photo was rendered with CPT's Olympic Terrain Mod, and I highly recommend it.     This region is based on a portion of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. The region covers towns such as Telluride, Silverton and Ouray. The large set of valleys running right up the center of the map is the route of US 550, 'The Million Dollar Highway'. It is a rugged region with few flat spots and large changes in elevations.   16. Greyscale Elevation ?

    Hi guys, ..so I've tried my hand at making my first few maps using the tutorials on here. The difference is that I've been importing the greyscale images into terraformer and saving them that way. I don't adjust the greyscale to make sure its above sea-level, I just use the raise terrain feature once I'm in terraformer. I've basically been able to troubleshoot things myself up until this point, heres my problem: Elevation !? How do I make maps with high mountains and deep valleys ? The greyscale feels maxed out, the tops of my mountains are white as possible yet the elevation in-game doesn't even break into the snowzone of my terrain mod like loads of regions I've downloaded have. Is there a way to do this without using greyscale ? Am I supposed to use the compress feature in terraformer (stretching the elevation instead of compressing it) ? I've tried that with mixed success, sometimes it looks decent but usually it makes the terrain lumpy. Thanks for any help you can offer, mwc EDIT: So I tried using the scale feature when I imported the image, and that worked wonderfully to raise the elevation in the mountains. My issue now is smoothness. The DEM data I used was 1/3 arc. When I saved the image as a GeoTiff in Microdem I had it fully zoomed in and when I resized it in photoshop the pixels went down, not up, so there shouldnt be any problems with upsizing. ^^ This is a zoom on one of the valleys, with should be relatively smooth and flat, if you look closely you can see how its not a gradual change. ^^ ^^ Here's what my region looked like even after smoothing it twice. In steeper areas its meh..ok...but the valleys aren't smooth, they step up and smoothing it just makes the steps rounded instead of creating a gradual slope. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong, I don't know how I can get any smoother of an image file to work with ? Any ideas would be appreciated, I'm probably just missing something obvious. Thanks, mwc.

    What is your "source" file and where does it come from ? If you use 3dem, it should be possible to save your map in geotiff, then open it in PS and save it as a 16 bit PNG file... I think you should forget MicroDem as it doesn't handle this standard. Hips ! Izi BREAKTHROUGH ! Well sort of. It's definitely the DEM data itself that is causing the stepping, this wasn't obvious in MicroDEM but in 3dem at full scale, before its even converted to greyscale, it's clear as day. So...can I ask where you get your DEM data from ? I've been downloading from USGS Seamless Data Warehouse, mostly 1/3 arc. http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm I thought this was what most people are using but I suppose not ? Unless I'm somehow mangling the data between downloading and opening...

    This is a map of the Marble Mountains and Scott Valley in Northern California. High mountains to the west, lower mountains to the east and a nice flat valley in the middle to build a sleepy farming community or a mountain metropolis. This is my first map, any tips will surely be appreciated !
  19. Greyscale Elevation ?

    I really haven't had much luck using 16 bit. When I convert to 16 bit in photoshop the image looks the exact same, with the exact same steps instead of a smooth gradient. So when I import to terraformer, 16 bit just makes the mountains HUGE, like giant spires, and once I compress them it basically looks the same as the 8 bit image. I'm not really sure what else I can do, the problem is definitely that the greyscale image I save from MicroDEM or Dem3 is already steppy and I can't 'upgrade' it after its already saved like that. I've just been very thorough with the smoothing tool in terraformer, which works but tends to kill any smaller features at low elevation and is a bit impractical on large maps. As far as coastlines are concerned, I've messed around with some, it shouldn't be an issue. I imagine a river might be a little more work.

The image is rendered with CPT's Missouri Breaks Mod but I would also suggest the LBT Chihuahuan Terrain Mod if you're looking for a more authentic Death Valley experience.   22. Greyscale Elevation ?

    You're lucky if you already have Photoshop. Forget the JPEG format, which compresses you image and deteriorates the quality (files in jpeg are for Internet : small and fast, but ugly in details). Convert your GeoTiff file into .png file (16 bit of course), and you'll be OK I think. Right, my problem I think is that the damage is done before I even get into photoshop. If I convert to a 16 bit png, when I import to terraformer the elevation change is massive, once I compress it, it stills looks as steppy as if I used an 8 bit image. I think my problem is saving the GeoTiff in high enough quality in the first place, I can't figure anyway to do that though.

    UPDATE I had some success. After messing around I got a region that wasn't toooo steppy. After a bit of smoothing it turned out quite nicely. Can't wait to try another.
