Greetings to my fellow SimCity 4 fans! Today I bring you the city of San Juan of Puerto Rico, capital of the Island of Enchantment, Puerto Rico, a Commonwealth territory of the United States of America located in the northeast side of the Caribbean! This city stands out as one of the oldest European settlements in the Americas, having been founded definitively by the year 1521 after the failed attempt of Caparra. The city was originally named Puerto Rico, and the main island was named Saint John the Baptist. Over time these names switched places in common parlance to what we know today. During its 500-year-long history, San Juan has acted as a formidable military base under the Spanish Empire and the United States of America. Its historic center, Old San Juan, stands proud with a vast system of walls, castles and fortresses defending its bay, with the San Felipe del Morro castle, Fort San Cristóbal and the Palace of Santa Catalina (residence of the governors of Puerto Rico since 1540) as its crowning jewels. During its active service, this system defended against raids from the Taíno and Carib indigenous groups, pirates and privateers from colonial rivals of Spain in the Caribbean, with notable names such as Sir Francis Drake (English), Sir George Clifford (English), Captain Balduino (Dutch) Enrico (also known as Boudewijn Hendricksz / Bowdoin Henrick, Dutch) and Sir Ralph Albercrombie (British). With the advent of the Spanish-American War and the sunset of the Spanish Empire, the Americans conquered the city and continued using it for military purposes, all the way to the end of the Cold War. During all of this time the city always maintained its function as the seat of government of Puerto Rico. Nowadays, San Juan experiences much more peaceful days, having become a major center of commerce, industry, education, finance, transportation and tourism in the Caribbean. With its municipal population of 395,326 inhabitants, it commands a conurbated metropolitan area of 1.25 million inhabitants and a combined statistical area of 2,732,036 inhabitants, encompassing essentially the northeast half of Puerto Rico. Among its other notable landmarks are its Convention District, Plaza las Américas (largest shopping mall of the Caribbean), the University of Puerto Rico, the José Miguel Agrelot arena (also known as "el Choliseo"), the Center of Beautiful Arts of Santurce, the San José Cathedral and the nightlife and tourism corridor encompassing the Miramar, Condado and Ocean Park neighborhoods. The download includes two maps: * The first, named "San Juan PR" includes only the core conurbation, with an area of 45.056km X 24.576km, equivalent to 11 X 6 large city districts but optimized for the notable landmarks and municipal centers of the metro area. This one is a high quality 8-bit grayscale-sourced map. * The second, named "San Juan Metro" includes most of the outer suburbs, with an area of 61.440km X 34.816km, equivalent to 15 X 8.5 large city districts, which are also optimized for placement of municpal centers and notable landmarks. This is a lower quality 8-big grayscale-sourced map due to its inclusion of the western part of the Luquillo Ridge, the mountainous area at which El Yunque National Rainforest is located. Players can render the map using either SC4 Terraformer, SC4 Mapper (with .SC4M file) or using the game commands with the grayscale and config files provided. Those who render the region from the grayscale map must use beskhu3epnm's High Elevation Import Mods w Erosion Control parameters, namely the 500m (core) or 1000m (full metro) plugin with the desired erosion level (I'd recommend either the no erosion or the quarter erosion (QE) variant). This region is based on a portion of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. The region covers towns such as Telluride, Silverton and Ouray. The large set of valleys running right up the center of the map is the route of US 550, 'The Million Dollar Highway'. It is a rugged region with few flat spots and large changes in elevations. The region photo was rendered with CPT's Olympic Terrain Mod, I highly recommend it. Thanks! -midwestcoast -
