Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
gradonacelnik replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
ECONOMICS 101: A PENNY FOR YOUR LOT There is no incentive to produce a product that consumers will use to produce and distribute content that they can't charge for. We are not dealing with an independent MAXIS that can do as Will Wright pleases, thedevelopers are beholding to EA and the EA stockholders. Will Wright was being very polite about the change of paths. Verison 5 (doubt they will call it that) will be simple, pretty and chock full of extra content that you can only purchase from EA, they might let you personlize it but your changes can't be shared with others. It will probably have more integration with other SIM products so that if you want to do more with it you have to go out and get SimLife or some other SimThing. The Simtropolis Exchange has had millions of downloads of user created content. EA didn't make a dime off any of it. Some upper level manager must be kicking some poor coder from one end of the office to the other for missing the chance to make an non-stop residual income. If they only could have charged $0.01 for each lot download they would be in hog heaven. I suggest everyone not get their hopes up too high to be smashed down by economic reality. We would be better off making a giant slush fund and offer it to EA as a reward to release the source code for SC4 to the public. -
My apartment is actually shown in the master plan on the website. I've been here for 4 months. I can't convince my wife to walk around at night so we have to drive to anyplace at night. If I have to drive might as well go to established areas like Old Town Pasadena and the like because 99% of friends and family live in the burbs. I would love to have someplace to go nearby but it won't matter to me if it does or does not turn out to be the case. I live downtown so that in the morning I can fly to work at full speed outbound. If they want us to live 24 hours in downtown LA they have to offer a better alternative than what they have now. Everywhere there is a problem of dealing with the homeless but downtown LA has an acute affliction. At night the only people downtown are the people cleaning the offices, the cops and the homeless.... and of course the few hardy individuals who purchased tiny lofts at Whilshire Blvd prices next to homeless shelters, these sophomores of downtown LA are severley outnumbered.

Voltaire; I agree with Sarge, the realism of the work and your skills at UDI are worth four bunnys

This is a great tips that ties well into the zonig tips for industrial lots. I'll try to see how well your grid will morph into a planned industrial grid using the CNTRL key.

This is an absolute requirement for the Omnibus. I don't think I'm alone when I end up smaking my head at the simple stuff that we forget because we are too wrapped up in trying to keep track of all the added content and the endless domino chain of dependancies. Make sure to update the post for the now defunct picture links.

All hope might be lost for SC4 to run well on a MAC but this monster will make 3d modeling childs play. Too bad you can't BAT on a MAC. I have an old version of Form Z on the MAC I think it's time to dust it off and upgrade to the current version and do real time rendering of a mega scraper on this monster machine. Then save the model to 3ds format and port it over to a PC and wait and wait and wait for a BAT render. Oh well....... Please anyone who is fortunate enough to get one and do some 3d modeling on it, please post how much fun you have not waitng for hourglasses.

STEX CD Volume 1 - Now Available!
gradonacelnik replied to Dirktator's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
I tried all three CD's sent to me and I am 0 for 3 as far as the Active X problem. The NERO Scan test had errors reading files in the AUTORUN/DOCS/ folder on all three CD's I have tested this on three machines. the fastest read speed was 11kb/sec. In 10 minutes it got through only 565 files. 26 files had errors. Nero ScanDisc results 68.19% good 26.58% damaged, 5.23% unreadable. The unreadable sectors were at the very begining of the disk. How are you duplicating the CD's? I would check all of the hardware and software to see if you have a defect. Check the master disk you are dupping from and if it is from an image I would turn on error checking. May I suggest that a DVD edition simply be a gigantic verified backup of the website STEX? Everyone is used to hunting and pecking to find dependencies and related lots. Those with experience can then creat a post that lists all the links on the DVD together in one single forum post and then the novices would only have to change the root drive letter of the link to get at what they wanted. This lets the community help by doing the hard work of linking relevant files together. And lets you focus on saving bandwith with a DVD distribution. You could create a new forum for the CD/DVD volumes. break it down by volume and then sticky a master thread with links to each new thread that deals with a single lot or map or BAT. The mission of the STEX CD or DVD should simply be to free up bandwith by moving the bandwith sucking lot/dat/map files to each members DVD drive. You could even join the Hollywood bandwagon and make collector edition DVD disks. You might have the BSC Team commision a DVD or the other established groups that have intricate dependencies. Maybe co-brand a Pegasus edition. -
