Okay, what Happened to the Reputation System?
Cockatoo replied to Mr Saturn64's topic in Simtropolis Related
Well, too many people loved the rep system so much, they all tried to log on our servers and then we've had to shut them down. To ease the load on our servers, we've disabled non essential functions of the rep system, like the rep system. Thank you for buying SimRep System 2013! But yeah it's down for maintenance. If we had the rep system right now, I imagine that would get quite a few +1's. -
EA Forum user mods game to play offline, enables debug mode, and places highways/rail in and outside of city boundaries...
Cockatoo replied to Charizard's topic in SimCity (2013) Modding - Open Discussion
We're quite happy to let anyone express any opinion at all with respect to this game here in the SC2013 forums. As long as they do it civilly, of course. At the end of the day, that's all we're really asking of anyone. Just browse through the forum and take a look for yourself. Heck, if everybody had the same opinion, be that positive or negative, we'd be out of a job. We're clearly not. What we can't tolerate however, is posts that, perhaps in an attempt to draw attention away from the issue or towards themselves, cause problems for or disrupt our users. For this reason, some post(s) have been removed from this thread. Please keep this in mind. Thanks. -
My "article" on simcity - how bad is it
Cockatoo replied to fabsies55's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Charizard and Catchin22: for the sake of the rest of us, your little conversation has been removed. If you two can't manage to play nicely, we'll be sending you both to the principal's office. (If you still don't get it, you need to discuss the issues, not each other.) Now back to the topic... -
Good point, that one. Some of you are missing the key point OP was trying to make. Express your opinions all you like. Just express them respectfully. Don't give other members a hard time just because you disagree with them. And pay attention to our long established forum customs. This is Simtropolis after all.

Lucy Bradshaw Answering Questions via Twitter
Cockatoo replied to jacksunny's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Yeah, good to see. I'm glad they've decided to try and dig themselves out a bit. These sorts of Q and A sessions are good, but only when the answers don't sound like they've been written by a politician. And Lucy's, for the most part, didn't. The answer to Q5 is interesting. If they're not totally ruling out an offline mode sometime in the future, then that, combined with bigger cities (which they've also indicate could be possible), a BAT-type tool on top and who knows... in a year or so when we've all forgotten this current mess, we might just end up with a good platform to start building the game we want. Only time will tell... -

It kinda sound like "you just got screwed by EA Games" in Simglish Made me smile, but seriously, I can't be the only one with this problem? Sorry about being abit grumpy, I just got home from town and im very drunk. Lol, that makes the thread title all the more fitting... Just try to watch your language in these forums - I had to edit out a few words. Cheers.

Must be american. . . lawls. Always soooo PC about every GOD DAMN thing Perhaps. I know different regions have different customs when it comes to swearing. I get the general impression it's a little more frowned on in North America than it is, say, here in Australia. Regardless though, this is a North American site and as such those standards of politeness apply. Plus, it's a PG rated board. The word was removed from the title. Back on topic now...

SimCity with Parallels on Mac
Cockatoo replied to s8film40's topic in SimCity (2013) Technical Help Q&A
I tried running SC3000 in fusion on a MacBook pro last week. Super smooth, as good as directly on a Windows PC, but for some reason the CPU decided to get crazy hot. Almost burned a hole in my jeans... I really wouldn't recommend running Sc2013 in any sort of virtual machine though, it's a 3D game and they're just not meant to be virtualised. If you had a Mac Pro, or equivalent PC hardware... maybe. But still probably no. Your best bet would be bootcamp. -
Haven't touched the game myself yet, but if you can overlook those four issues (those are from what I understand the biggest contributing factors in terms of negative reviews) then you shouldn't have a problem with the game. Personally, the size constraints are the biggest concern for me, and it probably will prevent a purchase at this stage - until it's sorted that is. But if this doesn't bother you right now then you should, in theory, enjoy the game. It's up to you.

Your worst fears, TRUE! READ!
Cockatoo replied to Catchin22's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Slow down guys... it's only day one after all. Whichever way you look at it, there are going to be errors galore. Just give things a few weeks to settle down. For those who are new to our community: resorting to name calling and petty arguing is not how we prefer do things around here. Discuss the issues in a helpful way. If you disagree with someone or something, do it in a respectful way. A few posts have been taken down or edited. To those people, feel free to re-express your concerns - just with a little more respect this time. Thanks, Cockatoo. -
That warmer filter really helps. Definitely a good move that was.

Looks good. As for the SC4 glass, it needs to be sharper and more broken up. Good luck with this, try to take it slow and steady and not loose motivation, it's all too easy to do on a big time-consuming project like this.

The reflections you've got on this one are really interesting. How do they compare to the actual reflection angles we'd see if using real models? Could it actually be possible to fake this with a simple ground plane?

SC4 wasn't perfect (and isn't perfect) - people who've been playing it for as long as we have tend to forget this. The default transit simulations sucked, often leading to half-abandoned cities, the way the game dealt with slopes was flaky at best and it was (and still is) riddled with bugs that can cause everything from laggy graphics to random crashes. While it may have had it's own problems, none of these things can be said of 3000. It ran better and smoother, even on today's hardware (trust me, I've tested it) than SC4 ever did or ever will. And while uglier, 3000's UI was, at least in my opinion, better than SC4's. The icon-based menus of 4 were far less efficient (everybody with a big plugins folder knows what I'm talking about) than the list-based menus of 3000. There's no doubt that SC4 was a more advanced game, geared much more towards realism. I had a lot of fun times with both of them. If I were asked straight out, which one do I prefer though... I'd have a hard time answering. I can't forgive SC4 for it's bugginess, while 3000 lacked the realism and beautiful graphics of 4. Really, I had no idea. I'd love to know more though. Got a link to an article about this or something? But I'm actually pretty glad we never saw a 3D SC game in the late 90's/ early 2000's... the graphics would've absolutely sucked. Hardware back then just wasn't powerful enough for the job.

Where has all the realism gone?
Cockatoo replied to joerg's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Nice post OP. Don't agree with you on the money thing, but I hear you on the rest. Modded SC4 allowed us to get as close to reality as will ever be possible with a 2.5D game. If you could somehow render it from a non-isometric perspective, with the right BATs and modds, it'd actually look pretty damn close to real. So we've become quite spoiled when it comes to realism and we tend to expect a lot. T Wrecks is spot-bloody-on here. I've been thinking the same for a long while now, I've just never said it. After all the 3D rendering I've done, a hobby which developed out of making stuff for SC4, I probably wouldn't be truly satisfied with a new SC game until I couldn't tell it from a photograph. But I know I'm part of a tiny minority of people who'd actually give a damn about details most wouldn't even notice. I know that even if they did take a more realistic approach, just as we do with our BAT's, I'd just say... make it better! Model the weeds between the cracks! Fix the shape of the curtains behind that glass! I never expected Maxis to give us exact reality, I knew that wouldn't be possible, especially in a 3D game. But I did want them to give me something that at least hints at reality enough so as my imagination can fill in the rest. Even with its 256 colours, SC2K could do that. It was realistic enough in the sense that my imagination could do the rest. So was SC3K and of course 4. But this one isn't. It's the huge empty buffers and the toyish miniaturised graphics (tilt-shift) and the giant moons ruin the whole illusion. I want my city to feel BIG, not small. Lol, the more I think about it, the more I can’t get my head around some of the decisions taken my Maxis. Since when has anyone ever said… I wish my city felt smaller. If it weren’t for these simple problems, not the ones relating directly to me as I detailed earlier, I’d overlook the online issue and buy it. But I can’t. My hope now is that Maxis, after getting feedback from people who aren’t us, will release a second edition geared more toward what we all expect from an SC game. I don't need perfectly proportioned buildings or immaculate detailed props, I just want something that hints at them... I want big sprawling kick-ass cities that you can almost imagine are real.- 48 Replies

Bummer about the memory. $350... very expensive, did you get 32GB of the high quality gamer stuff or something? Corsair is supposed to be one of the best memory makers... you should definitely demand a discount if they've sent you broken parts twice in a row. But are you sure it's not the motherboard first?

The problem there is that you used such a small sized box to carry out your tests the results would’ve no doubt been lost in the antialiasing. If you can muster the patience you should try again, this time with a box maybe a few hundred px wide and see what results you get. This’ll give you a better margin for error. Mathematically 133% I think will give you accurate proportions in game. But really I don’t think scaling matters that much any more. Some do, some don’t, there’s no one system to conform to because even among those who do stretch people still model things (i.e. floor heights) a bit differently to each other. Anyway, this looks pretty awesome PBGV, especially that base.

Hi guys, This topic is a spin-off from my regular BAT thread for my non SimCity 3D projects. I'll give you a quick overview first. 3D architectural illustration is something that I really enjoy and at some point I hope I'll be able to use it to generate some income on the side. But before I do that, I need to get my work up to a professional level. From time to time I'll post images of renderings I've done for feedback. Just take a look and tell me what you like and what you don't. The focus isn't about the design of the space or building itself but rather about how well I've visualised it. The aim here is to create realistic but well composed images that a client would be happy to pay for. I'll be using Max with the V-Ray render engine (as an alternative to Mental Ray) and Photoshop to make these images. Any and all feedback at all will be greatly appreciated. Cheers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *moving posts from BAT thread to here* ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted 29 June 2012 - 09:34 PM Just thought I'd let you guys know what I'm up too... My interests have really started to shift towards architectural visualisation, the sort of stuff you see at cgarchitect.com. At the moment I'm learning to use the V-Ray render engine as an alternative to MentalRay - it seems to be the most dominant in the industry and has the most support available. I absolutely love it so far, if it weren't for BATing I'd be willing to drop MR altogether. It's that good! But anyway, BATing has had to be put on hold in favour of this at the moment. I promise I will get back to it though. Here's some renderings I did today. It's a compilation of all the stuff I've learned through a bunch of online tutorials. HDRI dome light + V-Ray sun gives super realistic results when done correctly. I know it's all just floating in mid-air... the next step would be to create a proper background. And yes, trying to texture that lemon was a huge pain in the ass.

Obvious troll is obvious. Try to make it a little more subtle next time.

Still working on this one, but getting there. The insides are proving difficult, but hopefully will look a lot better with textures.
