The Top 10 Most Livable Cities
cammo2003 replied to Haljackey's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Originally posted by: Duke87 And, well, the American issue of sprawl is certainly a factor, too. All the nicest people in the NYC metro area live outside of the city, and thus don't count towards its ratings. Living in the city is something that's often left for the poor people, immigrants, and other "undesirables". ....so American cities not doing too good actually makes some sense... because the best America has to offer is almost always in the suburbs...quote> I've always found this interesting... because you could quite rightly say it's the opposite in most Australian cities... And perhaps that contributes something to the liveability. The inner suburbs are easily the most sought after. A townhouse in a place like Surry Hills, for example, would easily go for near $1m. The middle ring and outer suburbs are where you get your lower classes, although many immigrants live in relatively inner suburbs -- which I think has alot to do with their preference for areas of high accessibility, which tends to be fairly good in the middle ring suburbs. No Australian cities have a metro system. (Sydney will get one in coming decades if the government finally sheds it's 30 year neglect of rail). Melbourne does have a tram system in the inner suburbs which makes, from what I hear, the inner suburbs much more accessible within that city. Australian cities are actually alot like American cities in many ways. The exceptions are: - They generally have better transport systems. Try comparing Sydney's CityRail to most American cities of its' size... Add in the intense bus network and the ferry system and they don't have a hope (Sydney, by the way, has the second largest ferry fleet in the world - larger than Washington State Ferries, anyway, which according to wiki is third. I'd dare to guess that New York would be first). - On average, we have fewer motorways/freeways. - A greater percentage of our motorways are tolled, and the tolls can be quite steep -- nearly all of Sydney's motorways are tolled. - Most major shopping centres are situated conveniently near rail lines. Of course, most still use cars to get there... - Importantly, the inner city doesn't die after hours. There's still some life there. This is a fairly common thread in nearly every Australian city of any real significance. - Crime is also generally significantly lower. -

As for the store, perhaps a hairdresser? I dunno, you could probably put anything in there really, it's not like you can read the sign anyhow!

Good to see Van Wingerden so close to completion. Good to hear about the plaza lot, we can't have too many of those! The small shop is looking quite good as well, but a few minor things: - The walls look a bit too 'pink' to me. - Where's the door? Loving the roof on that though. I wouldn't change that roof texture for a thing, it works very well.

Normally, the contrast of old and new works, but in that case it fails admirably. We have an excellent example of how it looks when done well here in Sydney (Lumiere against the church and Town Hall across the road). Then again, you wouldn't expect anything less than excellent from Norman Foster (who's responsible for the design). It's simple, but oath does it suit the location.

Gimp shouldn't be doing that... unless you applied an effect to all those shots. Also, I assume you're dragging roads to make the neighbour connections for the one-ways. It's always bugged me that the game doesn't allow one-way roads to make neighbour connections.

The Cigar City Project: Tampa, FL Recreation

I'd apply a gradient to that wall texture, also, something about those window textures doesn't quite convince me. Great start on the parking lot. -

Dirk Day (System Administrator Appreciation Day)
cammo2003 replied to GingerBlokey's topic in Simtropolis Related
Yeah, thanks for the work you've put into all this, Dirk. And to all the mods, chat ops etc.... who also help out - we all appreciate it, even if sometimes some of us don't see eye to eye. -
Century 21 are actually international. I know that because they have them here, too (I'm in Australia).

Great work. I would have loved to have seen the crown lit up fancily, but meh, it's minor. It definitely has that NDEX *feel* to it, which is slightly different to the other BAT teams that have been through here. I can really see this one forming a centrepiece for many smaller skylines. A 9.8 from me which rounds up to ten. :D Had the crown been lit up, it would have been 10.

Is YOUR Plugins Folder Bulging?
cammo2003 replied to Artman94's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
1.5GB of plugins, 3,849 Files, 680 Folders. Time to recompress with DATpacker, methinks... -
This is looking AMAZING! Loving the detail. In a few ways it kinda reminds me of World Tower here in Sydney, Here's a link to some photos of WT on Emporis, it might give you a few ideas as to texturing if you haven't worked anything out. Emporis photos of World Tower, Sydney. Even if you don't use it, may come in handy at some point for ideas.

Muzz's Random BATs
cammo2003 replied to The boy formerly known as Evil Muzz's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
The new ATCT looks nice enough, though yes, the lower platform is a *tad* big... In fact, that's probably big enough to start affecting visibility from the control tower. The concept is good, though. I'd reduce the lower platform to a size where it could just barely be walked around. Don't forget communications paraphernalia on the top of the tower... It IS for an airport, after all (though I could imagine using something like that on an isolated mountaintop as well). -

A quick report - APTX's site appears to have disappeared. -
To this day I do feel that the biggest blunder EA made with SC4 was failing to include the difficulty levels... I suspect it would have been a substantially bigger hit had they been included.

Real Highway (RHW) - Development and Support
cammo2003 replied to qurlix's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
I understand the logistics side, and assume that the RHW mod and the NAM will likely be pulled from ST in short order. It may be a good idea to close this section of the forum as well.- 3,919 Replies
